diy wood shamrock decor

There is a holiday between Valentine’s Day and Easter that we forget a lot – let’s be honest. None of us wants to admit it, but I think you know exactly what I’m talking about.

This year, however, I’ve decided to make a few projects for St. Patrick’s Day, and my trip started at the dollar store. I’ve been really feeling the Sparkle Mod Podge this year and knew that I wanted to incorporate that as well.

When I was at Dollar Tree I spotted the wood shamrocks they had available, and I knew that’s what I wanted to decorate. With cute napkins, of course.

diy st patricks day decor

It was actually very easy to remove the wood shapes from the front using a scraper, which gives you options in terms of how you decorate with the napkins.

This shamrock decor is really easy to make and packs a punch with the glitter, and I think you’re really going to enjoy making these!

  • If you can, use a thin blade to remove any wood shapes on the front of your shamrock – mine had three wood hearts. It was easy to slide a scraper under them and pop the hearts off gently.

  • Paint the shamrock with the green paint. Paint the back if desired – let dry completely.

  • Paint the wood shapes with white paint and let dry.

  • Paint the wood shapes with Mod Podge and let dry. Paint a second coat and let dry.
painting the white hearts with Mod Podge
  • Separate the St. Patrick's Day napkin from the sheer white layer. There could be one or two depending on your napkin.
    separating shamrock napkin layers
  • Using three different parts of the napkin, iron the napkin down onto the wood hearts. Place a piece of parchment paper on top of the napkin, and run the craft iron across the top several times (mine was on high heat). While you are doing this, the Mod Podge is melting below the napkin, and the napkin is adhering. Keep going until the napkin is fully adhered, including the edges.
Ironing the napkin onto the hearts
  • Once the napkins/shapes are cool, use an emery board to gently remove the napkin from the edges by sanding at an angle.
Sanding the edges of the heart shapes with a nail file
  • Apply craft glue to the backs of the wood shapes and press them back onto the shamrock. Let dry.
Gluing the hearts back onto the shamrock with craft glue
  • Seal the entire shamrock with Sparkle Mod Podge, including both the napkin and painted areas.
Mod Podging the napkin with Sparkle Mod Podge
  • To finish, add a ribbon to the shamrock to hang. Tie several knots on both sides so the wood doesn't slip off the ribbon.

Who doesn’t want a set of pretty DIY personalized pencils to start a new school year? These also make great gifts – and are easy to do with Mod Podge.

Skills Required: None. Even if you’ve never Mod Podged before, this will be an achievable project for you. It’s simple enough for kids or adults.

DIY Personalized Pencils in Four Easy Steps

Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve had a love of fresh, brand new school supplies. The actual going back to school part . . . not as much . . . but new No. 2 pencils and blank notebooks always make me swoon!

Who doesn’t want a set of spiffy pencils to start a new school year? These pencils are one of my favorite crafts for teens or tweens. They also make great gifts – and are easy to do with Mod Podge.

Bottle of Mod Podge, roll of floral paper, craft knife, and paintbrush

Paper to Use

The only caveat I have is that you’re going to want to pick a thinner paper. Standard scrapbook paper is definitely too thick and not going to work – you want the pencil to fit into a sharpener!

Wrapping papers are typically thin enough, as well as the thinner rolls of kraft paper. Napkins and tissue paper will work, but it can take some practice so that they don’t wrinkle. I like to stick with the thinner wrapping papers.

You can easily make these at home. Keep reading to jump into the project!

Prep Time 20 minutes
Cook Time 30 minutes
Dry Time 2 hours
Total Time 2 hours 50 minutes
Servings 6 pencils

Equipment

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Start by cutting the paper into strips, 6 1/2 inches by 1 1/2 inches (or whatever measurement you need; use your ruler).
Cutting thin paper with a craft knife
  • Brush a thin layer of Mod Podge onto the back of the paper strips. Be careful not to oversaturate the paper.
Painting Mod Podge Matte on the back side of a piece of paper with a white paintbrush
  • Lining up the paper at the eraser end, tightly wrap the paper around the pencil by slowly rolling it around and smoothing any bumps or air bubbles if necessary. Let the pencils dry completely before sharpening.

Notes

Step 1: You’ll want to get the length pretty spot on. You don’t have to get the circumference as accurate, though you don’t want the paper to overlap too much. The paper wrapped pencil still needs to go into a sharpener.

Skills Required: None. Even if you’ve never crafted before, you can make this project! It’s one of the most basic crafts ever and just requires gluing and cutting.

diy luggage identifiers

If you are looking to meet someone who has had their fair share of luggage horror stories, I’m your girl. I’m always the one waiting when the carousel stops and all the bags have been passed out.

I can’t tell you how many times they’ve had to make a special trip to my place to drop it off (just call me Greg Focker). One time I even had the pleasure of having an airline attendant motion to a huge pile of luggage so that I could dig mine out myself.

I know I sound bitter, but I promise I’m not! It’s all part of the magic of traveling and flying.

One trick I’ve picked up over the years? Making my own DIY luggage tags. Not only do they help my suitcase stand out (especially if you, like me, have the ever-popular black roller bag), but they’re also an easy and fun craft that lets me add a personal touch to my travel gear.

how to make a luggage tag

These bag tags are perfect for beginners, and they’re a great way to use up fabric scraps. All you need is some Mod Podge, cardboard, and fabric to create a tag that’s both durable and stylish.

You can keep it simple with a Mod Podged fabric backing or go a step further and add a clear window for your contact info. Either way, these tags come together quickly and will make sure your bag is easy to spot on the carousel.

Let me show you how to make them two ways so you can customize your travel look. Get ready to never lose your luggage again (okay, maybe just spot it faster!).

  • Trace the cut cardboard tag onto your piece of fabric and cut the excess.
Trace and Cut Tag Shape on Fabric
  • Apply a layer of Mod Podge to the cardboard. Smooth the fabric flat onto one side and let dry briefly, then add another layer of Mod Podge on top. Let it dry.

  • Seal the both the front and back with another layer of Mod Podge and let it dry.
Apply a Layer of Mod Podge to Seal and Protect
  • To make one with a window: trace and cut another piece of fabric for the back of the tag (that is blank from step 4). Mod Podge the fabric piece onto the back of the tag and let it dry. Once dry, trim the excess fabric and use an awl to pierce through the fabric for the hole.
Mod Podge Fabric to Back of Tag
  • Pick up the rectangle pieces from step 1. Trace and cut a piece of fabric for one of the pieces. Mod Podge the fabric onto the rectangle piece and let it dry.
Cut and Mod Podge Fabric for Window
  • Once dry, trim the excess fabric around and inside the rectangle piece(s) (I'm showing two from two different tags here).
Trim the Excess Fabric from Luggage Tag Window
  • Cut a thin plastic sheet (such as an acetate sheet) the same size as the rectangle pieces. Attach the three pieces together (one fabric covered window piece, acetate, than one blank window piece) with hot glue.
  • Use hot glue to attach the window piece to the tag, leaving one end open to insert the paper. Then, insert a piece of paper with your address details.
    Attach Window Piece to Tag

Notes

I had all of the supplies on hand, meaning my project cost $0. You may have to purchase supplies.
Step 1: Use what you have on hand such as cereal or other boxes from the recycle bin.
Step 5: If you use inkjet, make sure the ink doesn’t bleed by using the instructions here. You can also handwrite the address and then Mod Podge over it – learn more about which inks smear here.

Oh, and if you love this luggage tag, you might want to try this DIY suitcase with photos! You can go all out and NO one will mistake your bag for theirs, I assure you.

In this DIY suitcase project, you'll attach your favorite photos to a vintage find using Mod Podge! This is so easy to do and you'll love the results.

Transform a plain clipboard with fabric, paint, and Mod Podge! A fun and easy craft to personalize your office or school supplies. Makes a great gift too, especially for teachers.

Skills Required: Beginner. I recommend doing a test with a scrap piece of wood and fabric if you have never Mod Podged before, so you can make sure you don’t get wrinkles. Otherwise, you’ll be good to go! This is relatively simple.

DIY clipboard

Let’s be honest – you could have a plain, brown clipboard, or you could have something way cooler. Basic brown just doesn’t do it for me, so I decided to give a brand new clipboard a Mod Podge makeover!

And while I was crafting, I had a special person in mind: my mom, who spent years as a fifth-grade teacher. She might be retired now, but she still appreciates cute school supplies.

Wouldn’t this make an awesome gift for a teacher? Whether for a classroom, home office, or just someone who loves a little extra flair in their workspace, a personalized clipboard is both practical and fun.

decorate a clipboard

Plus, it’s incredibly easy to make! All you need is some Mod Podge, fabric (scrapbook paper works too), and a few simple supplies to create something unique.

This project is perfect for beginners—so if you’re new to Mod Podge, this is a great place to start.

The best part? You can completely customize it with any design, colors, or patterns you love. Want something sleek and modern? Go for it. Prefer bright and bold? Make it pop! The possibilities are endless.

Whether you’re making one for yourself, a teacher, or a friend who loves organization, this DIY clipboard is going to be a hit. Ready to ditch the boring brown and upgrade your office supplies? Let’s do this!

DIY Paperweights from Glass Candle Holders

If you’re anything like me, your desk is a wild mix of creativity and chaos: notes, sketches, and to-do lists scattered everywhere. That’s why I love a good DIY project that’s not only fun to make but also functional.

Enter: DIY paperweights! Not just any paperweights, though. These are made with dollar store glass candle holders, a little Mod Podge magic, and a resin pour to give them a sleek, professional look.

Why should you make one? First off, they’re ridiculously easy. Second, they’re customizable. Use scrapbook paper, photos, or even vintage book pages to make them match your style.

And third, they make fantastic gifts! A personalized paperweight for a teacher, coworker, or grandparent? That’s a win.

Now, I’ll be honest. When I first spotted these rounded glass votive holders, I wasn’t thinking “paperweight.” But then inspiration struck!

DIY paper weights

Flip them upside down, add a pop of pretty paper, and seal it all under a smooth layer of resin, and suddenly, you’ve got something chic and useful.

And the best part? You can get as creative as you want. Embed pressed flowers, add glitter, or layer different papers for a unique look.

However you design yours, one thing’s for sure – you’ll never look at a glass candle holder the same way again! Ready to make your own? Let’s do it!

Ingredients

  • 2 Glass candle holders shallow
  • Scrapbook paper
  • Mod Podge Gloss
  • Epoxy resin and any needed materials to mix like: disposable container, gloves, stick, etc.

Instructions

  • Find a round object that is a similar size to the circular inset of the candle. Trace a circle around the item and cut the shape to fit inside the glass candle holder. Trim a strip of paper that will line the sides for the hole in the glass.
Mod Podging paper in the bottom of the candle holder
  • Brush a thick layer of Mod Podge on the interior areas of the glass. Press the two pieces of paper (the circle and the strip) onto the glass, with the back of the paper facing you (the printed side should be facing outward through the glass). Smooth out any bubbles.
  • Once that dries, apply another thick coat of Mod Podge on top of the paper. Allow that to dry completely.
  • Mix the resin in a disposable container in a 1:1 ratio. Stir and whip the mixture thoroughly (for about 2 minutes) and pour that solution immediately into the cavities of the candle holders.
Pouring resin into glass candle holders from the dollar store
  • The resin mixture is self-leveling and bubbles will rise to the top on their own. But you can help eliminate the bubbles by exhaling over the surface. Allow the resin to harden and cure for at least 24 hours.

Notes

Step 2: Smooth out any bubbles (they will be easy to see when you look through the glass).
Step 3: You can technically stop at this point and you will have a pretty, decorated piece of glass that will function as a paperweight.
I chose to go a little further and fill that open cavity with resin so that the piece looked more finished. Adding the resin also added more weight to the object, making it feel like a heavy piece of glass.
Step 4: Set up an area to pour your resin that is well ventilated. Read the directions on the box carefully. Wear the proper advised protection. You’ll just mix a little bit of resin for this project, so either make a bunch of them or only mix a little bit out of each bottle.
Step 5: You can also use a propane torch (the carbon dioxide, not heat, is what helps release the trapped air).

Learn to make a super cool confetti bowl in three easy steps! You don’t need any crafting skills for this, and the results are SO fun!

Skills Required: None. You don’t need any prior crafting experience to complete this project. You do need to know how to inflate a balloon, however.

Confetti Bowl

Have you ever worked with confetti in your crafts before? We’ve tried gift bags, a tray, candle holders, and even shoes (I know; they’re so fun!).

If there’s one project that a crafter needs to try in their lifetime, it’s a confetti bowl. Let me give you three reasons why:

  • Easy to make
  • Fun to make
  • Cute

Which is pretty much the criteria for any project I try. Not that I don’t want an advanced craft every now and again, but with limited time available, easy crafts are usually the most appealing.

Is it fun to make? Are the results cute? Those are other questions I ask about what I make, and I’m sure (even without knowing) you ask yourself the same thing.

Like I said, this confetti bowl meets all the criteria! Anyone can make it, and I mean anyone. It’s an easy craft for kids or for adults. V Juliet made this bowl with her kids, and they even popped the balloon for her.

Which I totally respect because I too would like someone to pop the balloon for me. And open the Pillsbury dough container. You know?? I’m scared of loud noises. 😮

There are three easy steps to this DIY confetti balloon bowl, and let me share them with you now. You’re going to: 1) Inflate a balloon; 2) Mod Podge the confetti on the bowl and let dry; 3) Pop the balloon and trim.

Oh, plus you can customize it with any color of confetti. What about black and orange for Halloween? Green and red for Christmas?? Did I mention that you can also purchase the supplies from Dollar Tree?

I think you’re convinced by now, so let’s jump into this balloon bowl DIY. I know you’re ready for this fabulous party craft. Keep reading!

Mod Podge vase with tissue paper

Are you a fan of flowers? If you are a chick like me, then the answer is likely “yes.” I can be picky about my flowers, and this might be funny, but I really like white flowers. I find white cut tulips to be particularly beautiful.

They are smooth and simple and look great in decorative vases, which I have several of (hello, decoupage addict). I’m going to show you how to decorate a vase with tissue paper and make it pretty to hold flowers!

I recently decorated a tall glass vase with tissue paper, and I think it’s lovely for displaying white tulips. I love a vase in the kitchen to brighten my mood in the morning, or even decorating a vase just like this one and giving full of tulips as a gift.

The tissue paper makes it a perfect budget craft, and I love the ombre pattern. If you want to Mod Podge on glass, this is a perfect craft idea to get you started. Here’s how it’s made.

Gather These Supplies

I’m so thrilled with the finished project. Now you know how to decorate a vase with tissue paper! My method keeps the tissue from wrinkling, because you’re using smaller pieces. Just like my wine bottles!

  • Use a cutter and die to trim the shapes from the tissue paper. If you don't have a Big Shot or similar, you can simply use a paper template and cut the tissue with scissors.
Feeding tissue paper into a Sizzix Big Shot on a leaf die
  • Apply Mod Podge to the glass and gently smooth one tissue paper piece down. You can use your finger or the brush.
Three colors of tissue paper leaves and a bottle of Mod Podge Satin
  • Paint Mod Podge delicately over the top. Just be careful not to brush too hard so that you don't tear the tissue paper. Repeat with the remaining pieces until you reach the top. Let dry.
Leaves Mod Podged to the bottom of a glass vase
  • Use the X-Acto to trim the any excess dried tissue paper that overlaps the edge. Then seal the entire vase again with a coat of Mod Podge. Let dry before displaying.

Notes

Step 1: Both with the die cutter and scissors, you can stack the tissue paper and cut out several shapes at once.
The most time consuming part of the project is cutting piles of several leaves. How many you need just depends on how large your vase is – this took about ten minutes for me. You can always cut more if you need to.
Start with the darkest shade on the bottom if you are doing an ombre vase like I did – put your mid-tone color in the middle and the lightest on the top.Appl

Turn inexpensive Dollar Tree art into stunning DIY wall decor! This budget-friendly craft looks amazing and no one will guess it cost nearly nothing to make.

Skills Required: Beginner. You’ll be spray painting, Mod Podging, cutting, and applying Mod Podge and Dimensional Magic. It helps to have experience with those mediums before attempting this idea.

diy dollar tree wall art

A few years ago, I picked up some wall art from the dollar store, and to be honest, it wasn’t great. I wasn’t sure what I’d do with it, so it sat in a drawer for quite a while.

It felt like wasted potential, but I knew there had to be a way to turn it into something better. Eventually, inspiration struck, and I decided it was time to transform that lackluster piece into something worth displaying.

That’s how this quick and inexpensive Dollar Tree wall art project came to life. It’s simple, budget-friendly, and the results look far more expensive than they are. The secret ingredient? Dimensional Magic.

It adds an amazing glossy, professional-looking finish that takes the project to a whole new level. The shine and texture give the artwork a polished, high-end feel that’s hard to believe started as a dollar store find.

If you’re looking for a fun and affordable craft that won’t take much time or money, this DIY Dollar Tree wall decor is perfect for you.

It’s a great way to experiment with your creativity and make something beautiful out of what might otherwise be overlooked. Ready to get started? Here’s exactly how I did it!

Gather These Supplies

  • Dollar store frame with cardboard backing (otherwise known as “special wall art”)
  • Mod Podge Matte
  • Mod Podge Dimensional Magic
  • Spray paint
  • Scrapbook paper – several sheets, colors and patterns of your choice
  • Craft glue
  • Paintbrush
  • Scissors
  • Die cutter or some way to make the floral shapes

You can use any Mod Podge formula for this project depending on the finish you are going for.

Notes

Tips for working with Dimensional Magic:
  • Make sure the substrate underneath is completely dry – or DM can become cloudy
  • Do not dry Dimensional Magic under a fan. This can cause it to crack.

DIY peace wood sign

Christmas is a magical time of year when everything sparkles a little brighter, and our homes become cozy havens of festive cheer. Today, I’m excited to share with you a delightful little project that’s as fun as it is simple.

It involves transforming a wood word from Dollar Tree – “Peace” – into a dazzling piece of Christmas or winter decor.

I didn’t have any specific plans when I was strolling the aisles of my local store and found this word. But what I loved about it is that the “A” is a tree . . . and I knew it had to come home with me.

When I got home, I browsed my stash and figured out what I wanted to do. I decided to take this wooden word and turn it into a stunning piece that screams (or rather, whispers) “winter wonderland.”

The process is as easy as it is fun. We’ll start by decorating the front with napkins. Yes, you heard that right – napkins! They’re not just for cleaning up spills anymore.

With a bit of Mod Podge magic, I’ll show you how to iron on napkins and turn the wooden word into a piece of art.

Then we’ll add a final flourish with some metallic and Gitterific paint. It’s like fairy dust for your crafts, adding that essential sparkle that every holiday decoration needs.

The result? A “Peace” plaque that’s not only a joy to create but also a beautiful addition to your holiday decor.

Easy Peace Wood Decor for a Seasonal Display

This project is a reminder that the joy of the season lies in the simple things – a little creativity, a touch of glitter, and the good feels of doing something yourself.

Scroll down for the full tutorial, and let’s spread some peace – and glitter – this holiday season. Remember, it’s not just about the destination but enjoying the creative process as well. Let’s get crafting!

Gather These Supplies

  • Wood word – I used PEACE from Dollar Tree
  • Holiday or winter napkin – also from Dollar Tree
  • Mod Podge (any formula)
  • Craft paint – white, metallic blue, metallic silver blue
  • FolkArt Glitterific – Hologram
  • Painter’s tape
  • Craft knife and mat
  • Emery board
  • Paintbrushes
  • Spouncer
  • Parchment paper
  • Mini iron
  • Clear spray sealer (optional)

If you’re going to put a napkin on a dark MDF word like the one in this project, you’ll need to use white paint (or something light) on it first. Otherwise you’ll see the dark background of the word through the napkin.

I didn’t seal the napkin on top with Mod Podge. You can, but it might wrinkle. If it does, you can re-iron it (use the parchment paper again). Another option is to use a clear acrylic sealer on top (spray). Apply after the napkin sets and then let dry.

I used Glitterific paint, but you could also use Mod Podge Extreme Glitter. One isn’t better than the other, the Glitterific particles are just larger!

If you use glitter paint, I highly recommend using a spouncer. A brush just moves the glitter particles around while a small foam spouncer makes it easier to “place” the paint.

Instructions

  • Paint the wood word using white craft paint. Roll on one side, let dry, and flip over. Paint other side and let dry. Use a small brush to get inside the letters. Let dry completely.
Painting an MDF word with white paint
  • Apply a medium coat of Mod Podge to the top of the word. Let dry and repeat. Wipe away any Mod Podge that dripped over the edges. Let the two coats dry completely.
Putting two coats of Mod Podge on top of the wood word peace
  • Use painter's tape to tape off part of the design, if desired. I taped anywhere that I didn't want the napkin to adhere. You can use a craft knife to trim the painter's tape.
Painter's tape on the tree portion of the word
  • While the Mod Podge is drying, separate the napkin from the bottom layers. You can use tape to help. You just want the top layer with the design.
    Separating a winter napkin
  • Place the napkin down onto the word. Place a piece of parchment paper on top of the napkin, and run the craft iron across the top several times. While you are doing this, the Mod Podge is melting below the napkin, and the napkin is adhering. Keep going until the napkin is fully adhered, including the edges.
Ironing the winter napkin on top of the word peace
  • Let the word cool after ironing. Use an emery board to gently sand away the excess napkin. Sanding at an angle works very well. Continue until all the extra napkin is removed. I used a craft knife to remove the napkin around the painter's tape area.
Sanding off the winter napkin edges with an energy board
  • Remove the painter's tape and paint the tree area using the metallic paint. I used two blues; one for the base of the tree, and one for the star. Let dry.
Painting the tree portion of the word peace
  • Apply Glitterific to the tree area with a spouncer. Let dry completely before displaying.
Applying glitterific paint on top of the paint

I created this DIY cake stand using a plate from the dollar store and an old candlestick. This is the perfect budget craft idea for a party!

Skills Required: Beginner. It’s a very easy project for those with basic crafting experience. You’ll be painting, gluing, and Mod Podging.

DIY cake stand

I actually did this DIY cake stand last year, but I wanted to share it again because I really like it. Vintage holiday-ish colors are my fav, and I think the blue and silver work in that regard – yet I could use this for a party all year round. If you love DIY cake stands for party or decorating . . . this is SO easy and inexpensive!

I assembled this DIY dessert stand for only $1. I had everything else on hand. I would love to do a series of these in coordinating patterns so that the party table I don’t have yet looks cool.

One day I will have a party table, and this will be on it! Here’s how I made this cake stand.

Dollar store plate, rhinestones, paper, circle cutter

Gather These Supplies

Notes and Thoughts on This Project

Before you paint anything glass with glass paint, you’ll want to make sure to clean it with mild soap and water and then let dry. You can also use rubbing alcohol.

When you paint the candlestick, make sure that you use a soft brush or the strokes will show in the paint. You will also need to paint several layers if it’s a metallic paint, letting dry between layers.

And since I’m basically a psychic, I can already predict your question. Can you put food directly on your DIY cake stand? You could, but then the decoupage police would come and arrest you.

The manufacturer recommends a clear glass plate on top of the decoupaged plate. Are you ready to try this project? The how-to card is below!
