Kids will love making these DIY suncatchers using tissue paper and recycled plastic lids! A fun, eco-friendly craft that’s bright and easy.

Skills Required: None. Kids around 3 – 4 years and older can make this project, as they’ll need to use scissors. The

diy suncatcher

It all started when I started collecting yogurt lids. I went through a serious phase and was buying the large containers – the 32 ouncers (Chobani, specifically).

I noticed when I was done with the yogurt that the containers were pretty solid . . . so like I good crafter, I washed them out and set them aside for the “right time.” I knew a craft idea would strike.

And sure enough, it did.

Are you looking for a fun, colorful, and eco-friendly craft to keep the kids entertained? These DIY suncatchers – made with recycled plastic lids and tissue paper – are the perfect project!

homemade suncatchers

Not only are they simple to make, but they also bring a pop of cheerful color to any window – and they’re a great way to teach children about reusing materials in creative ways.

We love projects that are easy enough for little hands but still result in something beautiful, and this one checks all the boxes.

Plus no need for glass or fancy materials. These suncatchers are made of totally kid-safe supplies, making them ideal for preschoolers or elementary-aged children who love to craft.

What I really love about this activity is its flexibility. You can keep it super simple for younger kids or get a little more creative by cutting shapes, layering colors, or adding glitter and embellishments.

It’s the kind of project that encourages experimentation, and it’s always fun to see how each suncatcher turns out differently. No two are exactly alike!

I used it as a stash buster, because I always have excess tissue paper in a ton of colors.

Are you ready to get started? The only thing you need to do before you jump in is to wash the lids and dry them. Then you’re good to go.

Notes

Step 5 – if you are using inexpensive tissue, be careful how many times you brush over it with the Mod Podge. Some tissue papers start releasing the dye if they get too wet with acrylic products. You don’t want to continue brushing and brushing them or all the colors will start mixing.

Make an adorable tissue paper bunny craft on canvas! A fun and easy Easter project for kids using Mod Podge, tissue paper, and pom poms.

DIY Easter bunny canvas for kids

When I was little, we didn’t craft for Easter that much. I guess it wasn’t “a thing” back then? I don’t know – but I feel like I was completely deprived of pom poms and pastel colored tissue paper!

I’m just kidding actually . . . but really, I didn’t do a lot of Easter crafts for kids when I was little. The focus was mostly on the baskets and the candy (not the true meaning but we were little).

Maybe I made a bunny with cotton balls and glue or something like that. The simple decoupage project I’m sharing with you today takes the basic cotton ball bunny up a notch!

If you are looking for a fun craft that works for Easter and beyond, this bunny canvas is for you.

Grab your kids’ craft supplies – a little bit of tissue, craft paint, Mod Podge . .   and you’ll get to use those pom poms I was deprived of too. Do you feel sorry for me yet?

If you’re ready to jump in, learn how to make it below!

Tissue Paper Bunny Canvas

Gather These Supplies

Paint the Canvas

Paint your canvas with several coats of the paint and let dry. You’ll want to let dry completely between coats.

Painting a canvas with bright green paint

Trace the Bunny

Print the bunny silhouette to fit your canvas – a sitting up bunny works perfectly for this purpose.

You won’t want to do anything too complicated. It needs to be rather simple and large for the tissue paper to work in making the shape.

Printed out bunny silhouette

Cut out the bunny silhouette and trace around the edge with a pencil, directly on top of the painted canvas.

Tracing the bunny silhouette onto the green canvas

Apply the Tissue Paper

Cut several small squares of white tissue paper. Take one square of tissue paper and wrap it around the eraser end of your pencil.

Pour some Mod Podge out onto a palette or piece of paper and dip your tissue paper/pencil into the Mod Podge.

Wrapping tissue paper around the end of a pencil

Push the tissue paper down onto the canvas within the boundaries of the bunny silhouette. Pull up the pencil and it should leave the tissue paper behind.

Placing tissue paper into the wet Mod Podge on the canvas

Keep adding tissue paper in the same way until the entire bunny silhouette is filled in. You’ll see if there are any spaces that need to be filled in when you stand back a little.

Add the Features

Glue pom poms where the nose, eye, and tail should go using craft glue.

Adding pink pom poms to the bunny on canvas

Let dry completely before displaying! I’m sorry, I can’t help but love the size of his cute tail. I think it’s the largest pom pom I’ve seen.

Now hang up your tissue paper bunny! I’ll admit, this project made me excited . . . because I’m wondering what other silhouette art I can make with tissue. Let me know what you think in the comments!

Learn how to create stunning marbled rocks with acrylic paint and Mod Podge! This easy DIY project is perfect for adding a colorful, artistic touch to your home or garden.

marbled rocks

I’ve been into rock painting for quite awhile . . . it’s soothing. If you’re looking for a craft that keeps you mindful and puts you into a good headspace – grab some rocks from the yard and a few bottles of paint.

I promise you, it will change your life.

Recently I noticed that marbling painting techniques were getting more popular, and I thought to myself first, “I wonder if I can do this with Mod Podge.” You know, instead of the pouring medium that is typically used.

I decided that I would try it. And instead of using a wood surface (which I typically use to test everything), I would use rocks.

My thought process was that if it didn’t work, I would just throw the rocks in the yard. They would at least be colorful.

It turns out that these marbled rocks were a lot easier to make than you might think! Marbling always looks impressive but is surprisingly easy to do. And the Mod Podge WORKS as a pouring medium!!!

painted marbled rocks

If you love experimenting with color and texture, you’re going to have a blast marbling rocks with acrylic paint and Mod Podge.

Whether you use them for home decor, garden accents, or even as paperweights, these rocks are going to stand out. Grab your favorite paint colors, and let’s get started on this fun and creative DIY!

To get started, you’re going to need rocks. Look for larger, smooth rocks that have a pourable type surface. You’ll see how the shapes of the rocks influence the results as you do this project.

Whether you live in the city or in the country, you should be able to find rocks (though ask before taking).

marbling rocks with mod podge

In addition to the rocks, you’re going to need the following:

  • Mod Podge
  • Acrylic paint (any colors) – you can use multisurface paint and they will last a long time outside
  • Small containers for mixing (one per color)
  • Paintbrushes
  • Dish soap
  • Paper towels
  • Wire rack or BBQ skewers and tin dishes

You’re probably wondering what the wire rack/BBQ skewers are for. You need a rack to dry the rocks, and it needs grates. A regular wire rack works well, but you can also poke BBQ skewers into tin bread dishes from the grocery store to make your own rack.

Equipment

  • Wire rack optional
  • BBQ skewers optional
  • Tin dishes optional

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Before beginning, wash your rocks with warm water and dish soap to remove the dirt. Let dry on paper towels.
  • Use a wire rack or create your own pouring rack. Do this by inserting BBQ skewers lengthwise across an inexpensive baking pan from the grocery store. The BBQ skewers have a point on one end, and you can push them through the tin easily. Do this approximately ¾ inch to 1 inch across the top. Lay your rocks flat on the skewers.
Poking BBQ skewers through a tin bread pan
  • Place your small mixing containers out on your work surface. In each container, place about 2 tablespoons of decoupage medium, a little bit of water, and a squirt of paint. You want about 1 to 1.5 tablespoons of paint in each container with the decoupage medium and water.
Paint and water added to Mod Podge in a small container
  • Shake or mix the container of decoupage medium, water, and paint until fully blended. Do this with each of the colors you would like to use.
Mixed containers of paint and Mod Podge
  • Start by choosing a color and carefully pouring it onto the rock. You don’t want to cover the entire rock because you are going to use other colors. Just pour it on one area and let it flow off the sides.
first paint color poured over a rock
  • Repeat this same process above with another color, letting it flow into the color you used before.
Second color being poured over a rock
  • Continue adding colors in various areas on the top of the rock, until the entire thing is covered. You can add drips and drops of color here and there at the end.
Mixing paint colors on the top of rocks
  • Finish off the rock by painting the bottom (optional, if desired). Repeat with additional rocks. Let dry completely.

Notes

If the rocks are going to be in the direct sun, I highly recommend additional coats of Mod Podge Outdoor (if you have it). Or you can purchase an additional UV sealer. Regular Mod Podge is not UV resistant.
After you’re done painting with the rocks, you can write messages on top or underneath with Sharpies or oil-based markers. If you are leaving them for others outside, you can write messages on the bottom. It’s fun to put a smile on someone’s face when they discover your rock art!

When I grew up in Seattle, and then later when I lived there as an adult, I never visited the Space Needle. I’m not sure why – my parents just never took me. It was until I came back as a tourist years later that I went to the top of the Space Needle for the first time!

There’s an analogy here . . . because I haven’t done of the most basic Mod Podge projects. You might assume someone from Seattle had been to the top of the Space Needle just as you might assume someone who runs a Mod Podge blog would have made washer necklaces.

washer necklaces diy

But it’s not so! I’m glad that I finally got to remedy this situation. Part of my reason for doing this easy craft was to make some simple decoupage jewelry . . . the other part was to see if it’s really as easy to make washer necklaces as some make it appear.

The answer is YES. These DIY necklaces were so easy to make! Plus I got to use Dimensional Magic, which is my favorite. Learn how to make this simple Mod Podge jewelry craft at home.

Gather These Supplies

  • Washers of various sizes – I like to use at least 3/4″ and larger
  • Leather or satin cords with chains
  • Mod Podge Satin – you can use any formula. That’s just what I had on my desk!
  • Mod Podge Dimensional Magic
  • Scrapbook paper to coordinate with your necklace cords
  • Scissors
  • Craft knife and mat
  • Pencil

Now I need to see what other beginner crafts I need to try to maintain my decoupaging reputation.

But until then, I’ll enjoy my necklaces. Oh – and I was thinking about it . . . these would be a perfect summer craft for kids or craft for girls. Tweens and teens especially would love them!

Are you looking for fun and easy decoupage ornaments to make for Christmas? These are so fun and sparkly – any age can try them!

Skills Required: None: Grab a bottle of Mod Podge and some scissors. This is one of the most simple projects you’ll ever do.

Easy Decoupage Christmas Ornaments with Fabric!

I know that right now many of you have little ones at home – they are out of school, it’s cold outside and they are bored. They might need some fun kids Christmas crafts! Kids love making Christmas ornaments!

Good news – Mod Podge is here to help. Since many of you are also setting up trees this weekend, you can set your kids at a table with these fabric scrap Christmas ornaments and let them go to town.

You know – adults actually love making these too. They are perfect for leftover fabric scraps if you’re a seamstress, and you can make some pretty pleasing color combinations with your scraps. Once you are done, slap them on the tree (okay, not so much slapping as placing).

These Mod Podge ornaments are so easy and inexpensive, you probably have everything you need already, and your kids are going to have a great time.

Here are the goods to make the kids Christmas ornaments. A couple of paper balls and some fabric. Oh, styrofoam works too, but I liked these because the hanger was attached. I have little patience when it comes to hanger-ing.

Paper mache christmas ornaments and a pile of Christmas fabric

(learn how to make a Christmas wreath for kids here!)

Gather These Supplies

  • Mod Podge – your choice of flavors. I used Glitter Gold, Glitter Silver, and Gloss. Glitter Mod Podge is no longer available so I recommend either Sparkle or Extreme Glitter
  • Paper mache ornaments – as many as you want to make
  • Fabric scraps – I didn’t have any holiday ones specifically so I bought 1/8 yard pieces from JoAnn. They were only around $.30 a piece with the sales right now
  • Embellishments – whatever you have lying around; I used ribbon and buttons
  • Flat paintbrush – one for everyone!
  • Craft Glue
  • Scissors

I had a great time decoupaging these! I fully believe adults should join in on kids Christmas crafts. Do you?

kids christmas wreath craft

If you are wondering how to get children in on the Mod Podge holiday action, I have the perfect Christmas kids’ craft for you – learn how to make a Christmas wreath the EASIEST way possible. It’s really so simple and so sparkly (which kids love)!

It uses a beloved formula that doesn’t get quite enough attention around here: Sparkle Mod Podge.

The little ones may need some assistance with the cutting and gluing, but the Mod Podging is for every level (it’s kid safe!). You aren’t going to believe how easy this is.

(check out our kids decoupage ornaments for another fun idea)

Gather These Supplies

  • Sparkle Mod Podge
  • Gloss Mod Podge (optional)
  • Foam wreath form – circle
  • Fabrics of your choice – you can use any kind: Christmas, old scraps, etc.
  • Felt in shades of green
  • Buttons – red
  • Scissors
  • Paintbrush
  • Glue
  • Ribbon to hang

Here’s a little tip. I use Gloss Mod Podge to glue things down and put Sparkle on the top. You don’t have to do this; the Sparkle formula glues things down too – but I like to preserve my Sparkle MP!

paper chain advent calendar

When I was little, we looked forward to making our advent calendars the weekend after Thanksgiving. My mom preferred that we have countdowns with no candy, and she always encouraged us to make things ourselves.

Therefore the paper ring advent calendar was born! This idea isn’t original – it’s been around since I was little and I’m sure even before.

I wanted to bring it back for those parents who had maybe never seen it, and show you how easy it is to do! If you and your kids like advent calendar ideas, this is going to be a sure favorite.

One of the best things about this paper chain countdown is your little one can help make it. Of course with any scissors an adult will need to supervise, but a child can do most (if not all!) of the work!

  • Construction paper at least four sheets of each color, brown and white
  • Craft foam black, orange, and brown
  • Craft glue
  • Adhesive wiggle eyes

Instructions

  • On the construction paper, place the ruler parallel to the short side and trace down the right side of the ruler.
Using a ruler and a pen to draw a line on a piece of brown construction paper
  • Move the ruler over and place the left side on the pen line, then draw another line down the right side of the ruler. Keep going until the whole paper is sectioned off. You'll get about 8 – 9 strips per sheet of construction paper.
Brown construction paper with lines drawn on it and a pair of orange handled scissors
  • Cut out all the strips. You’re going to want 26 strips total – 25 rings for the countdown and then one for the head.
Cutting strips out of brown constructions paper
  • Use a stapler to turn 24 of the paper strips into rings, attaching them in a row. Staple the 25th ring but don’t attach it, and leave the 26th paper strip alone.

  • Draw out your embellishments (like antlers or a hat) directly onto the craft foam. Then cut out using the scissors.

This DIY mason jar night light can be made on a budget – and your kids can help. The glitter is so sparkly and fun for night time!

how to make mason jar night lights

Hi it’s Courtney with Crafts by Courtney! Today I’m sharing how to make a simple mason jar night light for your kids room. This is such an easy project that the kids could even make themselves. It’s a great boredom buster when they need something to do!

My three boys love having a night light in their room. I’m constantly buying them from the Dollar Tree.

This time I thought I would make some with some mason jars. A cute recycled craft! It’s also an easy craft for kids, which is nice if you want to make them together with your littles. I made one of the night lights blue for a boy, and a multi-colored one for a girls’ room.

For this cool project, I picked out some smaller mason jars I had on hand. But an old pickle jar, baby food jar, etc. would work great as well. I selected my Mod Podge of choice and some extra fine glitter.

Gather These Supplies

  • Mod Podge Gloss
  • Food coloring – learn how to color Mod Podge here
  • Glitter
  • Mason jar
  • Paintbrush
  • Battery operated tealight candle

My 6 year old wants to make one for his room, but he wants a green one. I’ll be making a quick stop at the craft store for more glitter this weekend.

This mason jar night light would be a fun craft to make with kids at a sleepover. Something fun they can take home with them. Plus if you did the craft early enough, they could probably use them that night.

I don’t know which DIY night light is my favorite, I’m partial to the girly colored one, but I just think the blue one is really cool.

how to make checkers

Many of you know I recently moved to the west coast – back to where I’m from and back to my family. It’s been a long, difficult journey but we’re finally here! What you may not know is that now that I’m back in town – the games have begun. And I mean literally.

My family are very serious game players. We love everything from board games to UNO to dominoes. We’re turning my niece onto games too! She’s way into checkers, so we made this DIY checkers game using supplies at my mom’s house!

Putting the pieces inside the bag

  • Peel from the wax paper like stickers and attach them evenly to the top of the baggie in alternating rows of four.
  • Cover twelve of your buttons with one color of tape, and twelve with the other color of tape. To cover the buttons, place a small square of tape over the top of the button.

  • Press the Duck Tape down and smooth, then use scissors to trim around the edges of the button; press down the remaining tape to give it a smooth top.

Want to try decoupage for kids? Start with a box to store knick knacks and toys! This easy kids craft is fun for children and parents alike.

Easy kids craft- decoupage treasure box

I don’t know about your kids, but mine? Mine are constantly finding and bringing home “treasures” that they just can’t seem to part with.

The question is then how to store these gems so that they’re both accessible and contained at the same time.

Enter this easy decoupage for kids craft, a treasure box of sorts. Not only does it do the hard job of storing all the things your kids cannot do without, but it’s also a great craft project to complete together.

You can keep everything contained AND keep the kids occupied! This boredom buster is great for kids of all ages, and you can use things you already have on hand to make it. It’s a great opportunity to let their minds run free. Learn how to make it below.

Decoupage Box for Children

Gather These Materials

  • Mod Podge Gloss (you can also use the Kids Washout formula)
  • paper mache box (ours is from Hobby Lobby, and comes in lots of different sizes)
  • foam brush
  • squares of scrapbook paper (tissue paper would work, too)
  • glitter
  • paint

Step 1: Gather craft paint and a paintbrush (we used a foam brush), and paint your box. Let dry.

child painting a box with craft paint

Step 2: Once your box is dry, it’s time for the real fun to begin. I used a paper cutter to cut scrapbook paper into 1″ squares. My 5-year-old had a blast painting Mod Podge onto the box and gluing down the squares.

Ok, I’ll admit it – I had a blast doing it as well.

After the squares are Mod Podged down, let dry. If you want to overlap your squares, you’ll probably want to go back and repeat the process. If not, let dry completely and seal with one or more coats.

adding mod podge to the lid of the box

Step 3: A craft project isn’t truly complete until we’ve made an absolute mess; it’s time to add some glitter! Brush on a light coat of Mod Podge.

Sprinkle glitter onto the top and sides of your box (we used gold and red glitter for this step).

And that’s it! This decoupage for kids is such a fun and easy project to complete, and having a “crafting partner” was a lot of fun, too!
