Make these fun and easy cactus painted rocks! A cute craft that’s perfect for beginners, kids, or anyone who loves low-maintenance plants.

Skills Required: None. You don’t need to be an artist to make these adorable rocks. You’ll be painting, using paint markers, and gluing (adult supervised). This is a great project for beginners and fun for all ages!

diy cactus painted rocks

Are you ready to dive into one of the cutest rock painting trends around? Today I’m sharing my tutorial for cactus painted rocks – the kind that won’t prick your fingers. However, they will make you smile.

I might not be a hot weather person (I live in the PNW), but I really love cacti and succulents in decor. I can’t explain why – they’re just very unique looking.

Plus what other plant protects itself with spikes? I feel like that sometimes. Soft on the inside, bristle-y on the outside. I think we can all relate. Right?

Whether you’re decorating your garden, creating fun home decor, or just looking for a relaxing craft, these little succulents are the perfect way to enjoy painting stones.

This is a fun craft idea for both kids and adults. Being absolutely honest, I had *the best* time painting and making this garden. It checks all the boxes, without being creatively stressful. And the result is . . . just so dang visually pleasing!

easy cactus rock painting

Another benefit of this project is the mindfulness that comes along with it. You get to be out in nature while selecting the stones . . . and the painting portion is very relaxing and methodical. Like outside gardening in the dirt, there’s a peace to creating this rock garden.

And don’t worry if you make a mistake – these rocks are very forgiving. You can always repaint and try again, or just call it a “funky cactus” and roll with it. That’s part of the charm!

Before we jump into the tutorial, let’s go over a few things you need to know when starting out:

What kind of rocks should I use for cactus painting?

Regular cacti come in a variety of shapes and sizes, so that is what you’ll want to look for in your rocks. I tried to choose smooth stones that were somewhat flat for my largest cacti.

cactus rock art

As you get toward the front of your garden, you can choose shorter, wider stones. That is what I did. So flat and tall towards the back, and shorter and thicker toward the front.

It always helps to look up some pictures of cacti online to inspire you!

What kind of paint is best for cactus rocks?

You’ll want to use an acrylic paint that’s durable and vibrant. I recommend FolkArt Multi-Surface or Apple Barrel Multi-Surface paints – they’re both great for beginners and hold up well over time.

Honestly I just used what I had in my stash. This is a great stash busting project when it comes to paint. I have *a lot* of bottles of paint with just a little bit left, so I just grabbed a bunch of greens.

The paint finish doesn’t matter because you’ll be sealing with Mod Podge at the end. The Mod Podge will even out the finish.

  • Place your pot on your surface and start filling it. I used dirt with some stones on top that I had left over from gardening to fill my pot. At the very top, you should use dirt (or something that can hold the decorative sand). Once your pot is filled, place the rocks you’ve collected in an initial layout and take a picture with your phone. You’ll want to stagger the rocks like you would people in a family photo: tallest in the back, working down with the smallest towards the front. This might not be your final layout, but you want an idea to start.
placing rocks in a terra cotta pot to test fit
  • Once you’ve got your layout photographed, begin painting the rocks. I used six different shades of green in total. I tried to paint rocks that were next to each other in my layout with different shades of green.
rocks painted with a single layer of green paint
  • Continue painting the rocks until you have the proper coverage, and let them dry completely.
green painted rocks of various shades
  • Working one rock at a time, add "cactus accents" to each rock with paint pens. I used a combination of Xs, Vs asterisks, polka dots, and thick/thin lines. I used white, light green, and dark green paint pens.
You can use my photos for inspiration – it's the combinations and colors that make your cacti. Use variety and I promise you'll be happy.
painting on green rocks with a paint pen
  • Paint all of the rocks with Mod Podge. Let dry, paint a second layer, and let dry again.
painting the cactus rocks with mod podge
  • At this time, you can choose the small pebbles you'd like to use for your cacti's "flowers." I chose to do only four pebbles and then painted them pink using a variety of shades. This will likely require several layers. Let dry. And some paint pen accents and let dry.
painting the smaller rocks with pink paint
  • Use the stone glue to attach the flowers to the the tops of the rocks of your choice. For mine, I used painter's tape to keep the pebble in place on top of the rock. Then I used a small container to keep them upright while drying. You'll need to let them dry for several hours. Once dry, carefully remove the tape.
allowing the small cacti to dry with painter's tape
  • You're ready to set up your garden. Pour a layer of decorative sand into top of the pot and smooth out.
pouring white sand into the terra cotta pot
  • Split a clothespin and insert half of it into the dirt to stabilize your largest stone at the back. I didn't glue the stone to the clothespin. Once I nested the large rock into the sand and rested it against the clothespin, it stayed there by itself.
stabilizing the rocks in the pot with a half clothespin
  • Add the remaining stones and brush off any sand with a dry paint brush. At this time you can add stone cacti to fill in any areas you desire. You can even paint more to fill in, as I did.
adding additional rocks to the grouping

Notes

Step 1: you can also use sand or other filler from a garden shop. Whatever you use should be able to support the rocks – which is why I used dirt, even though I don’t need it.
Step 2: don’t be afraid to mix shades of green! In nature, no two shades are exactly alike, so take advantage of that here.
Step 4: play around with your design. If you decide you want to change it, you can paint over the paint markers at any time. Let dry and start over.

diy wood shamrock decor

There is a holiday between Valentine’s Day and Easter that we forget a lot – let’s be honest. None of us wants to admit it, but I think you know exactly what I’m talking about.

This year, however, I’ve decided to make a few projects for St. Patrick’s Day, and my trip started at the dollar store. I’ve been really feeling the Sparkle Mod Podge this year and knew that I wanted to incorporate that as well.

When I was at Dollar Tree I spotted the wood shamrocks they had available, and I knew that’s what I wanted to decorate. With cute napkins, of course.

diy st patricks day decor

It was actually very easy to remove the wood shapes from the front using a scraper, which gives you options in terms of how you decorate with the napkins.

This shamrock decor is really easy to make and packs a punch with the glitter, and I think you’re really going to enjoy making these!

  • If you can, use a thin blade to remove any wood shapes on the front of your shamrock – mine had three wood hearts. It was easy to slide a scraper under them and pop the hearts off gently.

  • Separate the St. Patrick's Day napkin from the sheer white layer. There could be one or two depending on your napkin.
    separating shamrock napkin layers
  • Using three different parts of the napkin, iron the napkin down onto the wood hearts. Place a piece of parchment paper on top of the napkin, and run the craft iron across the top several times (mine was on high heat). While you are doing this, the Mod Podge is melting below the napkin, and the napkin is adhering. Keep going until the napkin is fully adhered, including the edges.
Ironing the napkin onto the hearts
  • Once the napkins/shapes are cool, use an emery board to gently remove the napkin from the edges by sanding at an angle.
Sanding the edges of the heart shapes with a nail file
  • Apply craft glue to the backs of the wood shapes and press them back onto the shamrock. Let dry.
Gluing the hearts back onto the shamrock with craft glue
  • Seal the entire shamrock with Sparkle Mod Podge, including both the napkin and painted areas.
Mod Podging the napkin with Sparkle Mod Podge
  • To finish, add a ribbon to the shamrock to hang. Tie several knots on both sides so the wood doesn't slip off the ribbon.

Decorate a birdhouse with a charming gnome theme using Mod Podge and paper! This fun and easy DIY project adds a whimsical touch to your garden or patio.

DIY gnome birdhouse

So . . . who here likes garden gnomes? Raise your hand!! Me mee meee! Am I the only one raising my hand? Gnomes are so fun and remind me of spring – as do birdhouses.

So to celebrate, I created a birdhouse for some of my family members with spring colors and a happy gnome. You’ll need a birdhouse to start, and the rest is fun.

This project goes well with the fairy garden and painted rocks I’ve also done. You’ve got lots to make for the out-of-doors this year, so you’d better get crackin’!

DIY Gnome Bird House

Gather These Supplies

  • Wood birdhouse
  • FolkArt Outdoor acrylic paint – Burnt Umber, Fresh Foliage, Pure Orange
  • Mod Podge Outdoor
  • Woodland themed scrapbook paper
  • Martha Stewart Gnome and Woodland stickers
  • Martha Stewart Log Alphabet stickers
  • Cardstock – yellow, brown, orange
  • Craft knife
  • Ruler
  • Paintbrush

Paint the Birdhouse

Paint your birdhouse with the FolkArt colors. I used Fresh Foliage for the sides, Burnt Umber for the roof and Pure Orange for the perch.

Painting the birdhouse around the edges with green and on the roof with brown

This Outdoor paint is self-sealing and really durable, so you are good to put it outside. (PS – I just did the edges of the sides where I would be covering with paper).

Cut the Papers to Fit

While waiting for that to dry, I cut the papers to fit my birdhouse. I used one design around three sides, and another (woodgrain) design on the roof.

Cutting the paper with a craft knife and ruler

It takes a minute, but it’s really about measuring and cutting carefully to get the exact fit – so it’s not hard, just time consuming.

At this time I also used my Sizzix Big Shot to cut the mushroom shapes. You don’t have to do that though – you can draw and cut by hand just as easily.

Apply Paper to Birdhouse with Mod Podge

Paint a medium layer of Outdoor Mod Podge on one side of the birdhouse.

Painting Mod Podge on the side of the birdhouse

Adhere the (nicely) trimmed paper and smooth thoroughly. Let it dry for 15 – 20 minutes and repeat on all sides.

Smooth the paper down with your hand

Seal Your Project to Finish

Once dry, paint a coat of Outdoor Mod Podge over the whole birdhouse. Let dry and repeat.

Painting a coat of Mod Podge on the roof of the birdhouse

I attached all of the embellishments with craft glue, then gave the entire birdhouse a third coat of Outdoor Mod Podge (including over the embellishments).

Painting the birdhouse embellishments with Mod Podge Outdoor

Let dry completely before hanging outside.

decorate a birdhouse with a gnome theme

To finish and make sure it’s extra durable, add an Enamel outdoor sealer (this is optional, but important with intense UV exposure). Now you can enjoy your happy gnome birdhouse.

Make an adorable tissue paper bunny craft on canvas! A fun and easy Easter project for kids using Mod Podge, tissue paper, and pom poms.

DIY Easter bunny canvas for kids

When I was little, we didn’t craft for Easter that much. I guess it wasn’t “a thing” back then? I don’t know – but I feel like I was completely deprived of pom poms and pastel colored tissue paper!

I’m just kidding actually . . . but really, I didn’t do a lot of Easter crafts for kids when I was little. The focus was mostly on the baskets and the candy (not the true meaning but we were little).

Maybe I made a bunny with cotton balls and glue or something like that. The simple decoupage project I’m sharing with you today takes the basic cotton ball bunny up a notch!

If you are looking for a fun craft that works for Easter and beyond, this bunny canvas is for you.

Grab your kids’ craft supplies – a little bit of tissue, craft paint, Mod Podge . .   and you’ll get to use those pom poms I was deprived of too. Do you feel sorry for me yet?

If you’re ready to jump in, learn how to make it below!

Tissue Paper Bunny Canvas

Gather These Supplies

Paint the Canvas

Paint your canvas with several coats of the paint and let dry. You’ll want to let dry completely between coats.

Painting a canvas with bright green paint

Trace the Bunny

Print the bunny silhouette to fit your canvas – a sitting up bunny works perfectly for this purpose.

You won’t want to do anything too complicated. It needs to be rather simple and large for the tissue paper to work in making the shape.

Printed out bunny silhouette

Cut out the bunny silhouette and trace around the edge with a pencil, directly on top of the painted canvas.

Tracing the bunny silhouette onto the green canvas

Apply the Tissue Paper

Cut several small squares of white tissue paper. Take one square of tissue paper and wrap it around the eraser end of your pencil.

Pour some Mod Podge out onto a palette or piece of paper and dip your tissue paper/pencil into the Mod Podge.

Wrapping tissue paper around the end of a pencil

Push the tissue paper down onto the canvas within the boundaries of the bunny silhouette. Pull up the pencil and it should leave the tissue paper behind.

Placing tissue paper into the wet Mod Podge on the canvas

Keep adding tissue paper in the same way until the entire bunny silhouette is filled in. You’ll see if there are any spaces that need to be filled in when you stand back a little.

Add the Features

Glue pom poms where the nose, eye, and tail should go using craft glue.

Adding pink pom poms to the bunny on canvas

Let dry completely before displaying! I’m sorry, I can’t help but love the size of his cute tail. I think it’s the largest pom pom I’ve seen.

Now hang up your tissue paper bunny! I’ll admit, this project made me excited . . . because I’m wondering what other silhouette art I can make with tissue. Let me know what you think in the comments!

DIY Glittered Eggs using Mod Podge

Easter is just around the corner, and if you’re looking for a simple, sparkly way to decorate, I’ve got the perfect project for you—glitter Easter eggs!

These colorful, shimmering eggs are so easy to make, and the best part? You probably already have everything you need in your craft stash.

I’ll admit, I don’t typically go all out with Easter decor. I tend to focus on the bigger holidays. But then I realized that with just a little glitter and some Mod Podge, I could create something festive without a lot of effort.

And let’s be real—who doesn’t love an excuse to break out the glitter?

how to glitter plastic eggs

These eggs are perfect for displaying in a glass jar, scattered across a table, or nestled in an Easter basket.

The process is simple enough that even kids can get in on the fun (just be sure to protect your workspace unless you want to find glitter in unexpected places for the next six months).

You can mix and match colors, try different types of glitter, and even experiment with finishes to make them uniquely yours.

If you’re ready to add some sparkle to your Easter celebrations, grab your supplies and let’s get started. I promise, once you see how easy and fun these are to make, you might find yourself covering more than just eggs in glitter. Let’s get crafting!

  • To make eggs with two or more glitter colors, coat the top half of your egg in an even layer of Mod Podge, dip in the glitter container. Let dry, and repeat the same for the lower half and a different color.
  • Once all your eggs are glittered, seal them. In a well-ventilated area (preferably outdoors), spray one side with Mod Podge acrylic spray to reduce glitter fallout and let dry. Repeat with the other side. Let dry before displaying.

It helps to have a holder to prop up your eggs when drying, like so:

DIY keychain with a Mod Podge photo transfer image

Are you ready for Mother’s Day? I wasn’t, until recently – when I made this photo keychain! This photo craft was created for my mom, with a photo of me and my younger brother when we were kids since we don’t live near her anymore.

I think it’s a good gift to make for someone who has older kids, younger moms or even fur moms. You can create a basic one (like the one I made), or fancy it up with charms and other embellishments.

If you like DIY keychains, add this Mod Podge photo craft to your list of projects. Join me to see how easy this picture keychain project came together!

Gather These Supplies

I’m pretty sure my sentimental mom would love this photo keychain, and I hope yours would too! It’s something easy, simple and from the heart that you can give to your mom or make for yourself.

I’m going to be making one of these DIY keychains with a photo of my furbabies too! I know my mom likes this plain so I kept mine simple, but you can definitely personalize it even further with different embellishments or charms.

  • To create a ‘long’ piece of wood perfect for a keychain, I used a 3″ x 3″ wood square. They’re soft enough to cut down to size with just a box cutter or X-Acto knife. You’ll want a steel ruler and patience, as well.
Cutting a 3 by 3 wood square into three pieces with a box knife
  • Once you are done creating your wood rectangles, sand the edges as well as the front and back surfaces with fine-grit sandpaper.
Two wood pieces and a piece of sandpaper
  • Drill a hole on the top to accommodate your keychain ring later on using a drill with small drill bit – the size would be relative to how big or small your keychain ring would be.
Two wood pieces with holes drilled in one end
  • Print the image – don’t forget to flip it before printing if there are words on it. Base the photo size on the size of the wood strip.
Printed image cut down to size
  • Apply a thick coat of photo transfer medium to the image, and lay it face down on your piece of wood. Use a brayer to push out bubbles and flatten the image onto the wood. Leave to dry overnight.
Painting photo transfer medium over the top of the photo with a brush
  • Once dry, wet the paper and carefully rub the paper until the image shows. Be careful with rubbing the paper too much, unless you want a really aged look to the keychain. Repeat until paper is removed.
Rubbing paper off of a photo transfer keychain
  • Use antiquing wax and apply it on the edges of the keychain. This step is optional, but it's a fun effect.
  • Using the same brush (unwashed), apply a layer of Matte Mod Podge. The remaining residue from the antique wax will mix with the Matte Mod Podge to create a slight sepia sheen. Make sure the faces don’t have any stray specks of wax or paper before it dries.
Homemade keychain with a photo and Mod Podge Matte
  • Attach the keychain ring and chain to finish.

Notes

Step 1: If your wood squares are thick, you may need another tool to cut the wood. Rather than mess with it, you may just want to purchase wood rectangles with holes already cut. I’ll let you decide!

If you don’t have Mod Podging experience, it doesn’t mean you can’t try! But I would do a test on a small piece of pipe first.

Everybody has a mom, even Man Podger David. No, he wasn’t brought down on a crafty alien spaceship, though sometimes his projects are out of this world! That was a horrible joke, by the way.

David’s decoupage gift for Mother’s Day is a collection of photo vases made out of PVC pipe, so even though my joke was bad, it was completely true. Here’s how he made these DIY vases.

I’m getting a lot of requests for Mother’s Day themed items at my Etsy store, so I had the holiday on the brain when I visited Home Depot recently. I found myself, as I often do, in front of all the PVC piping thinking “there must be something I can make out of this!” PVC pipe for the win.

DIY photo vases made with PVC pipe

There are so many great shapes and sizes and it’s all so affordable, but I’ve never been able to come up with anything. And it suddenly dawned on me that I could use the various pipes to make DIY vases.

And then I thought, why not decoupage the pipes in old pictures and make fun, nostalgic photo vases for a Mom’s Day celebration? For a total cost of about $12.

Here’s what you will need for this project:

  • PVC pipes – various widths
  • PVC caps to fit the pipes
  • PVC pipe cement
  • Outdoor Mod Podge
  • Wooden plaque for a base, painted with the color of your choice (mine is from Michaels)
  • Glue (I used E-6000)
  • Laser copies of old photos
  • Foam brush (not pictured)

Tools

  • Miter saw
  • Forstner Bit and drill (optional)

You don’t *have* to use Mod Podge Outdoor for this project. Mine is going on an outdoor table, so the Outdoor formula would be appropriate. If this is going inside, you can use the formula of your choice (I recommend Gloss, Matte, or Satin).

Ingredients

  • PVC pipes various widths
  • PVC caps to fit the pipes
  • PVC pipe cement
  • Mod Podge Outdoor
  • Wooden plaque for a base painted with the color of your choice (mine is from Michaels)
  • E-6000
  • Laser copies of old photos

Instructions

  • Cut the PVC pipe into various lengths from 8" – 11" using a miter saw.
  • Following the manufacturer’s instructions, use the PVC cement to glue the caps to the bottoms of the pipes. This guarantees that no water will escape the pipes through the bottom. Set them aside to dry.
    Apply the Seal
  • On your computer, resize each photo to fit a specific pipe piece. You want to make each photo tall enough and wide enough to wrap around its designated pipe. Print the photos out onto plain paper using a laser printer.
  • Soak the images in water. While the images soak, Remove the image from water and gently run your fingers down to remove the excess water.
    Soak the image
  • Coat the outside of your first pipe in Mod Podge. Apply the image to the pipe and use your fingers to smooth out bubbles. Add Mod Podge to seal the ends of the paper where there is overlap. Repeat for each pipe and let dry
  • Use two Forstner bits to drill recesses into the wood plaque so the each pipe is seated. While this step is optional, it gives the project a more finished look and provides extra stability.
    Optional Drill into the plaque
  • Paint the wood plaque with acrylic paint and let dry.
  • Give the photo vases a sealing coat of Mod Podge. When that's dry, trim away any excess paper from the tops and bottoms.
  • Glue the tubes to the base using E-6000. Add some glue between the pipes for stability if necessary. Let dry completely before using.

Notes

Step 1: If you purchase your PVC pipe from the home improvement store, you can ask them to cut it for you there (then you won’t need a saw).
Step 2: If you don’t plan to put water in the vases (like if you’re using fake flowers), you can skip this step.
Step 3: You can also play a little bit with the tint of each picture to provide some contrast and a more vintage look.
You need to use laserjet for this project if you are going to successfully decoupage without wrinkles. Otherwise when you soak the image in the next step, the ink will run.
Step 4: This is the best way to apply images printed on laserjet to round surface with no wrinkles. You’ll be surprised how well it works.
Step 9: My suggestion is that you cluster the pipes closer together so they touch each other to provide a little extra stability.

Some further thoughts on this project:

  1. I think next time I will paint the tops of the PVC pipes for a more finished look.
  2. It occurred to me that this could become a very adaptable thing. If you used a thicker base and drilled deeper holes you could skip gluing the tubes in place and just let the base hold them.
Then you could then decoupage other tubes with colorful graphics or fabric or what have you and, when you wanted to, swap out the tubes to suit your mood!

If you enjoyed this photo craft, you’re going to love these vintage Mod Podge photo transfer vases. You’ll be making glass clings. it’s really fun.

Skills Required: Beginner. You’ll be painting on canvas, Mod Podging to seal, then adding your buttons with glue. It’s a relatively easy project.

how to make button art on canvas

There’s something about buttons that just makes me happy. Maybe it’s their cute little shapes, the satisfying way they pile up, or how they can turn the simplest craft into something really special.

If you feel the same way, you’re going to love this DIY button canvas art project!

This is an easy and fun way to create custom wall art using buttons in your favorite colors. My version features a circular button wreath with a glittery heart accent, all set against a painted canvas with a clean border.

I went with turquoise (because, let’s be honest, it’s my favorite), but you can switch it up with pinks and reds for a classic Valentine’s Day look with the heart – or any color that fits your vibe.

button art on canvas

One of the best things about this project is how simple it is. You don’t need advanced skills or fancy tools—just a blank canvas, some paint, Mod Podge, and a big ol’ pile of buttons.

You’ll create a crisp border with stencil tape, arrange your buttons into a pretty wreath, and add a sparkly heart for a little extra flair. The result? A unique piece of DIY wall art that looks great on a mantel, shelf, or gallery wall.

Priming a canvas with white paint
  • Use a ruler, pencil, and stencil tape to make a border. Mine is 1/4" inside the rim of the canvas, and it was 1/4" wide. Mark where the tape should go, then tape just on the outside of the pencil marks. That way, when you paint, you cover the pencil marks.

  • Use the craft knife to trim the stencil tape inside the border, being sure not to puncture the canvas.

Knock it out of the park with this DIY baseball decor! Easy, budget-friendly, and perfect for Father’s Day or any baseball fan’s wall.

DIY baseball decor for your wall using a ticket print

Hi, it’s David from Cheltenham Road.

I’ve been wracking my brain to come up with a Father’s Day gift. Of course, being me, I’ve left it to the last minute (it’s how I roll) but I think I’ve got a fun, unique, easy and very affordable wall decor idea dads will love.

My dad has enough books to fill a library, doesn’t wear ties anymore, and probably isn’t in need of any more drink coasters (although some dads whose sons don’t make coasters might check out my Etsy shop if you’re so inclined).

What I did decide is that some personalized wall decor might be fun, and he loves baseball and baseball history. And since I love anything vintage and graphic, I decided this DIY baseball decor could work out great!

Baseball wall decor idea

I used a vintage ticket design, but you could use anything: other paper memorabilia from a favorite game or concert, perhaps? You could also make a collage of tickets or children’s art, black and white pictures – the sky’s the limit.

This project came together crazy quick, so it’s great if (like me) you’re a bit stuck on selecting a Father’s Day gift idea.

And, best of all!?!!!!

No one will know you only spent a few dollars on this because . . . it looks like . . . A BIG TICKET ITEM! Sorry, couldn’t resist . . . should have, but couldn’t.

Are you ready to give it a try? Get the printable how to card below:

Equipment

Ingredients

  • 1 Enlarged print of an old baseball ticket
  • 1 piece Medium density fiberboard lumber cut to size: 36" x 10.5"
  • Mod Podge Matte and/or Hard Coat
  • 1 bottle Craft paint white
  • 2 “D” hook hangers

Instructions

  • Find the graphic you like. Resize and have printed as an engineering print – 36" x 10.5" size.
    Vintage Baseball Ticket
  • Give the board a light coat of white paint. Let dry and then give a light sanding to smooth out bumps and add a bit of distressing.
MDF board, oversized print of a ticket, and a foam brush
  • Soak your print in a container of water for a few seconds. Soaking the paper makes it easier to smooth out with fewer wrinkles.
    Soaking the print in water
  • Apply a medium coat of Matte Mod Podge to the board.
Apply Mod Podge to a board with a foam brush
  • Handling the paper carefully (it's fragile at this point), lay it out onto the board. Use a roller to smooth out air bubbles and squeeze out excess Mod Podge. Wipe away with a brush. Let dry completely.
Using a paint roller to gently smooth out air bubbles
  • Sand away the edges for a worn look. Seal the entire piece with two coats of Hard Coat Mod Podge. Let dry.
  • Add the hanging D hooks to the back of the board and hang.

Notes

Step 1: After you find a graphic you like, save the resized graphic as a PDF (to guarantee that it prints out at the correct size), transfer it to a thumb drive, and take it to Staples.
At Staples I asked for an “Engineering Print.” Engineering prints are affordable, oversized print outs that are great for graphics. My three foot long print out cost $6, and they did it while I waited.
Step 2: I chose to use Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) for my backer because it is inexpensive and has a super-smooth surface that makes it easy to work with when decoupaging – no splinters or unevenness.
I like working with MDF, but any fairly smooth lumber will work just fine. And if you don’t have access to saws, most lumberyards will happily cut the board to your dimensions.
Step 3: Since this project was so large, I used a plastic bin that I had on hand. I’ve done similar using the kitchen sink or bathtub.

I hope this helps any last-minute gift makers like myself! If you have any questions about my DIY wall decor, fire away – I will monitor the comments section. Also check out these other ideas:

While Natalie’s photos illustrate the glitter going all the way up to the glass rim, if you are going to use these you should leave the glitter about 1/4″ down from the lip of the vessel according to best practices for Mod Podge. Thank you!
