In under a few hours you can have a DIY Halloween wreath made with cupcake liners that will put others to shame. It’s so simple – only four steps.

Cupcake liner Halloween wreath hanging on an old glass window with a pumpkin and skull

Halloween is just around the corner and I wanted to get started on a couple projects for the house early. My first project was a cupcake liner Halloween wreath!

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays to decorate around. I try not to go too spooky since I have three little boys. But I do add some spiders and bats around the house (maybe even a skull or two). I wanted to make a new cupcake liner wreath, last year I attempted my first and I LOVED it.

Finished DIY Halloween wreath with a gold glitter spider

These wreaths are so easy to make (under a few hours), since then I’ve made one for every holiday but giving each one a new spin.

This Halloween wreath looks perfect on my entertainment center. I added a couple more spooky touches to the area and now I’m one step closer to finishing my Halloween decor early.

This time I pulled out my “trusty” Mod Podge to give it a cool glittery effect. Learn how to make this Dollar Tree Halloween craft below!

Gather These Supplies

One of my favorite parts of this Halloween craft is that it’s a pretty inexpensive project. I usually find my packs of cupcake liners on sale for $1.00 each.

Each package has 100 liners, and I always use about 300 liners for my wreaths. Not too bad for a holiday wreath! Way cheaper then going out and buying one new.

Hey Mod Podgers! I’m Becca from Blue Cricket Design, and I’m super happy to be here today! Mod Podge definitely rocks but not nearly as much as Amy and her awesome blog. Both are two of my favorites!

I’m thrilled to be able to come and play and show off my MP skills. Are you guys ready for a little recycled Halloween craft fun? This is a fun Halloween craft for kids or adults. Or the family can make them together. They make great DIY Halloween decorations once you’re done. Let’s do this!

(also known as Halloween hangy-thingy-ma-bobs!!)

Are these Halloween ornaments too much fun or what? I was introduced to paper-mache Christmas ornaments from my cousin! I thought to myself “Self – wouldn’t these be perfect for any holiday!?!”

diy halloween tree decorations

For sure!! Some whimsical painting and Halloween colors make these little guys spook-erific. Here’s the “how-to” low down . . .

Gather These Supplies

  • Those glass ornaments I’m sure you can find in your Christmas stash. If you need to go get some, check your thrift stores first. I picked up a 24 pack for 50 cents. SCORE!
  • Newspaper
  • The magic craft nectar – MOD PODGE
  • Acrylic craft paint
  • Wire for hanging
  • Beads for added flair
  • Paintbrushes
  • Patience . . . the painting can take a while

You don’t have to stick to what I’ve done. Add glitter and gems to add sparkle. Or cut out Halloween images from scrapbook paper and decoupage them on! The possibilities are endless.

Learn how to make the cutest mason jar lanterns for Halloween using Mod Podge and tissue paper! This is perfectly easy holiday decor for kids or adults. This project is completed in four simple steps.

Skills Required: Beginner. It helps to have experience with Mod Podge since tissue paper is slightly fragile. However, ultimately any wrinkles just add charm to the project. Both kids and adults can make these, though kids might need help with cutting.

Halloween mason jar lanterns

If you’re new around here, let me introduce myself – hi, my name is Amy, and I’m addicted to Halloween. And Halloween crafts. And Halloween candy. And decorating. And really anything that is orange, black, or purple. Yes, I would love living in a world where every month is an October!

One of the things I’m going to add to my Halloween decorating this year is mason jar lanterns for my front stoop. We get a lot of trick or treaters, and I wanted a simple craft that I could make to accent the inflatables I put in the yard (I know – I’m one of those people).

I use jack o’ lantern inflatables, so I thought it would be fun to make a jack o’ lantern. Then it went from there, and I made a ghost and a Dracula too!

These luminaries are so, so easy to make. Even the kids will want to jump in.

One of the things I love about these Halloween mason jars is that they use tissue paper instead of paint. This is nice because when you add a tealight, the light shines through reasonably brightly – more so than if you use craft paint or spray paint.

DIY Halloween lanterns

I didn’t have any jars on hand to make these lanterns, but if you can turn this into a recycled craft, I highly encourage it. Any kind of pickle jars or similar will work for this project!

Just make sure you clean them thoroughly as outlined in my post about painting mason jars. You want them clean so that the Mod Podge sticks.

In terms of the Mod Podge formula to use, this project utilizes the Satin type. But you can use any formula you like, honestly. Gloss or Matte would work as well.

Are you ready to get the tutorial? This project is completed in four simple steps: jar prep, applying tissue paper, applying faces, and spray painting the lids. Let’s dive in!

  • Mason jars
  • Mod Podge
  • Tissue paper – purple, white, orange
  • Cardstock – 1 sheet of black
  • Spray paint – black
  • Paintbrush
  • Pencil or pen
  • LED tealights – 3

I love the glow of these lanterns. I can’t wait to make more and display them on my porch. Would you try this Halloween craft? I’d love to know in the comments! Here’s the printable how to:

Easy DIY Superhero Costume for Kids

Is your child obsessed with being a superhero? It seems to be a theme that never goes out of style, and I have to admit, I love it too. We all have a bit of superhero within us! That’s why when the La Petite Academy challenged me to come up with a craft for their Awesome Kids Week, I was all in!

I made this awesomely easy DIY superhero costume for kids. If you’re wondering who the superhero lover is in my family, it’s my niece. She modeled her DIY superhero costume with pride:

easy superhero costume

La Petite Academy has year-round infant through school-age programs and has special events throughout the year like Awesome Kids Week. Thursday is Thrilling Thursday, and that’s superhero day . . . which is why I made this cutie costume!

This project was so easy and inexpensive! The greatest part? Kids will love to help make their own costume.

Gather These Supplies

  • Old t-shirt
  • Foam mask ($1 at the craft store)
  • 1 sheet felt
  • 10 yards tulle – I got 2 yards of five colors. You’ll need less for a baby and more for an adult!
  • 36″ elastic
  • Mod Podge Gloss
  • Hot glue gun
  • Paintbrush
  • Glitter
  • Scissors
  • Velcro tabs (optional)

Mod Podge doesn’t come in a small squeeze bottle, but I do keep it in one for outlining sometimes. You can also “draw” the lightning bolt on with a paintbrush and your Mod Podge!

We decided to go with a feather boa for our costume instead of a cape: 1) we wanted to be original (supergirl!) and 2) easier for kids to sit down in class without having to move anything! Adding the boa is up to you.

  • Cut the felt to fit the child’s wrists. Repeat step 2 on the cuffs, making smaller lightning bolt shapes.
  • For the wrist cuffs, either use Velcro to secure if you want them to be reusable, or attach them with glue the day of. You can cut or slip them off later.
  • Spread a coat of Mod Podge on the mask; sprinkle glitter. Let dry and shake off the excess. Let dry.

  • Line up the tulle pieces one on top of the other. Trim the edge so that when doubled over, it's the desired length (for example, if you want a 15" skirt, your strips need to be 30" long). I cut strips of all five colors at one time.
Cutting a stack of tulle with scissors
  • Attach tulle strips to the elastic strap, one by one. Make a loop halfway down the tulle strip, wrap around the elastic, and pull the two ends through. Work your way around the elastic.

  • Push the strips tightly together so that when the elastic is put around the waist, the skirt is full. Add a boa or anything extra you desire to complete the costume!

Make Mummy Halloween Luminaries in Three Easy Steps!

While looking through the Pottery Barn website for Halloween decorations (which I do religiously), I spotted some cute gauze mummy mason jars. I thought they were super cool, BUT they were $25.00 each. YIKES! I knew I could totally make these Halloween lanterns myself.

Here’s a quick look at what Pottery Barn Mummy Luminaries look like. I think they look pretty similar . . . and mine are way cheaper. What do you think?

I checked my craft supplies to see if I had some cheesecloth and I DID! This is such an easy project to do, you could even turn it into a Halloween kids craft. I know my boys would really enjoy making one too. So I grabbed some glass jars and Mod Podge to begin.

I really think these Halloween candle holders turned out cool and it’s something I can keep for a long time. Since I had all the materials on hand, it didn’t cost me a thing. Woohoo!

Are you ready to learn how to make this awesome Halloween mason jar craft? Keep reading!

Gather These Supplies

  • Mod Podge Matte
  • Glass Jars
  • Cheesecloth
  • Circle Punch
  • Black Cardstock
  • Foam Brush

Finally, pick up some flameless candles or tea lights and you’re ready to display your Halloween luminaries! They would look perfect on a Halloween mantel, front steps, or even as a night light for the kids (use the LED lights!).

Make Mummy Halloween Luminaries in Three Easy Steps!

See how easy these mummy mason jars were to make? I had all three done in about 15 minutes. It took me longer to find the cheesecloth than it did to make them.

I have some more really cool Halloween crafts coming up so stay tuned (here’s a spoiler, they’re all gonna use Mod Podge). Get the printable how to for this one below:

Make a painted pumpkin with a skeleton design. This Halloween craft is SO easy – add Sparkle Mod Podge for a really festive touch!

Skills Required: Beginner. You’re going to paint with a smaller brush, but you will be putting the pattern down on the surface (so you’ll have a guide). If you have experience painting anything, you’ll be fine.

DIY skeleton pumpkin

Too early for Halloween – and a painted pumpkin idea? My friends, there is no such thing as too early in the world of crafting! That is what I love about being a crafter. I can be a rule breaker. By the way, am I the only person that refers to skeletons as “skulligans?” If you are out there, please identify yourself.

My first project of the season is this DIY pumpkin. It’s easy and uses Mod Podge as a sealer . . . and it’s NO CARVE. There’s some painting involved but it’s fun, and you also get to use white transfer paper.

Ooh la la. This purple and black and glitter painted pumpkin will be loved by you for years to come, guaranteed. Here’s how to make this skeleton pumpkin.

Gather These Supplies

  • Craft pumpkin – in black, preferably
  • Skull and crossbones clip art printed out to fit the pumpkin – I got mine from Microsoft Clip Art
  • FolkArt Paint – Licorice, Dove Gray, Metallic Silver Sterling
  • Sparkle Mod Podge
  • Purple or silver craft leaves
  • Paintbrushes in two sizes – small and large
  • Hot glue gun
  • Pipe cleaners, black
  • White transfer paper and stylus OR chalk
  • Stencil tape

Ingredients

  • 1 Craft pumpkin
  • Skeleton clip art printed out to fit the pumpkin
  • Craft paint I used FolkArt – Licorice, Dove Gray, Metallic Silver Sterling
  • Mod Podge Sparkle
  • Purple craft leaves
  • Pipe cleaners black
  • White transfer paper and stylus
  • Stencil tape

Instructions

  • Paint the craft pumpkin with Licorice (unless you got a black craft pumpkin).
  • Tape the white transfer paper behind the pattern onto the pumpkin surface. Use a stylus or pencil to trace the image, leaving the white lines behind.
Skull pattern traced onto the front of the pumpkin
  • Use your small brush to paint in the skeleton design with gray paint. Follow the pattern lines as closely as you can. Keep painting until you’ve filled the skeleton completely in and then allow to dry. Don’t forget the stem.
Painting in the pattern with a small paintbrush
  • Use your small brush and silver to paint over the gray. It gives it a nice little sheen. Cover and then allow to dry. Paint the stem too.
Painting over the gray with silver paint
  • Coat the pumpkin with several layers of Sparkle Mod Podge, allowing to dry between coats. Set aside and allow to dry.
Painting sparkle mod podge over the top of the pumpkin
  • While you are waiting for the pumpkin to dry, take some of the leaves and glue onto the ends of pipe cleaners.
Gluing black pipe cleaners to purple sparkly leaves
  • Once dry, wrap the pipe cleaners around a finger to make a curled vine effect.
Twisting the pipe cleaners around a finger to create coils
  • Using the hot glue gun, attach the pipe cleaner “vines” to the top of the pumpkin, then start attaching leaves. Let the glue cool completely before displaying.
Gluing the leaves to the skeleton pumpkin

Notes

Other methods for transferring the pattern if you don’t want to do transfer paper:
  1. Cut out the image and hold it to the pumpkin, tracing around it in chalk (you can erase it later). Don’t draw so hard with the chalk that you create grooves in the pumpkin surface.
  2. Turn the pattern over and color it with a white crayon. Tape it to the pumpkin and use a pencil to trace the lines, which will transfer the crayon to the surface of the pumpkin.

This Halloween piñata costume for a dog was so easy to create! It was made with a pet shirt and felt. Simple and unique!

Skills Required: None. You don’t need any prior crafting skills to do this project – but, you should probably like glitter.

diy dog pinata costume

This dog Halloween costume has been a long time coming! Two things were instrumental in the formation of this idea: 1) this costume and then 2) a little sombrero hat:

diy pinata costume for a dog

I have NO idea where I got this sombrero hat. I’ve had it for so long in my craft stash. At one point it was on a headband and in a drawer of mine; when I moved into this new studio I ripped it off of the headband (who knows why?) and placed it on the top of one of my craft supply racks.

I bought the sombrero because it made me smile, and so there it was for months. I always wanted to take a picture of it on my pug Roxie’s head, but never got around to it.

It wasn’t until I was brainstorming dog Halloween costumes and saw Alana’s tutorial for the piñata costume that I got inspired to make my own.

I grabbed one of Roxie’s old doggy tees and then headed to Michaels to get my craft supplies. Here’s how it all came together!

Gather These Supplies

  • Dog t-shirt – it can have a graphic on the top as long as it’s small enough to cover up
  • Mini sombrero hat
  • Rainbow felt – I used 8 sheets of the Creatology brand at Michaels; the amount you use will depend on your dog’s size
  • Gold glitter – Martha Stewart brand at Michaels
  • Mod Podge Gloss
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Ribbon – about 12″ or enough to wrap around your dog’s head and tie underneath
  • Ruler (optional)

  • Dog t-shirt
  • Mini sombrero hat
  • Felt various colors – enough to cover the shirt
  • Glitter gold
  • Mod Podge Gloss
  • Ribbon about 12" or enough to wrap around your dog's head and tie underneath

Instructions

  • Select a cotton t-shirt to fit your pooch. You can use one with a graphic as long as it can be covered up. Lay the t-shirt on your work surface.

  • Lay out the felt in rows to cover the shirt. I ended up using eight pieces; you may need more depending on the size of the shirt.
Multiple colors of felt laid out on a dog shirt
  • Start with your bottom piece(s). Cut it to fit the width of the shirt.
cutting the red felt to the width of the shirt
  • Decide how long you want the strips vertically – I chose about 2 1/2" long. Trim the felt down to size with scissors or a craft knife.

  • Once the bottom piece is cut to your specifications, use it as a template to cut the same sized pieces from the other colors.
cut out pieces using the first piece as a template
  • Cut fringe in all of your felt pieces. Cut slightly more than halfway up the felt, and try to eyeball equal sections of fringe. They don’t have to be exact, but as close as possible.

  • Add sparkle to the edges of the fringe. Either paint or dip the edges of the fringe in Mod Podge, then dip in glitter. Place on a piece of wax paper to dry.

  • Once the fringe is dry, take it outside and shake the excess off of every piece.

  • Trim the felt to fit around the armhole with scissors.

DIY Halloween potion bottles

Steve saves everything. I’m not as big of a fan of saving things, but he can picture the use he’s going to have for them. He takes pills for his heart condition, and as a TON of leftover bottles . . . which he’s been saving for crafts for quite awhile.

For Halloween this year, he decided to create these DIY potion bottles out of those old pill bottles! And the real treat is that he created some printable labels you can use with your potion bottles! Fun, huh?

DIY potion bottles for Halloween

You just need to print these bad boys out, some paint, Mod Podge, and get your Halloween craft on. Learn how to make them just in time for the holiday below!

Gather These Supplies

Another way to get the rusty finish is to use texture or modeling paste instead of the painted finish above. Use that first to make texture in certain areas, then let dry. Paint over with a rust colored paint and let dry.

Are you partial to poison, toad’s feet, rat tail, or essence of evil? Let me know in the comments! Happy Halloween!

  • Use sandpaper to rough up the surface of the bottles before painting.
    Sanding old pill bottles
  • After the bottles are roughed up, add black to the base (you can spray paint). Paint the lids medium gray. The lids don't need to be roughed up because they will probably have textured ridges and printed letters on the top. Let dry.
Painted pill bottles with black paint
  • Print out the pill bottle labels; cut or punch out. Place the labels on the bottles.

  • Seal the bottles with Mod Podge. This will prevent the labels from removing and the paint from chipping. Let dry.

  • Start distressing with the medium and light gray shades. Brush randomly with a stencil brush, layering, even going onto the label.
Gray paint brushed onto the pill bottle
  • Do this with the lid as well. AND on the lid you'll want to add some of the FolkArt Painted Finishes – Rust. It gives texture and looks like blood/rust/some other identified substance.

  • Add a little black paint to the top of the rust to age it even more. Let dry.

Learn how to make a cheesecloth ghost for Halloween the easy way, with fabric stiffener! You can make these in any size you like with this method.

Skills Required: Beginner. If you’ve never worked with fabric stiffener before, it isn’t hard but it can be a little bit messy. You might want to try a smaller ghost first with a small piece of cheesecloth before making something larger.

Cheesecloth ghost

I’m REALLY excited about today’s Halloween craft. If you’ve never made a cheesecloth ghost (also known as a Stiffy ghost) before, you need to stop whatever you’re doing right now.

Do not “pass Go,” do not collect $200 – it’s time to head to the craft store! You’re going to need only a few supplies to make this awesome Halloween decor.

For those new to fabric stiffener, it’s a pretty simple premise. Whatever you dip into the stiffener becomes “stiff” when dry. That includes cheesecloth, fabric, and other lightweight materials.

That doesn’t mean your finished item is totally rock hard, but it’s pretty solid and can support itself. Just like this Halloween ghost.

Glowing cheesecloth ghost

The key to any project with fabric stiffener is creating a solid mold (otherwise known as an armature) that you can drape the fabric or cloth over.

You’re going to wet the fabric with the stiffener, then hang it over the mold. The mold needs to be able to retain its shape until the stiffener is dry.

In this case once the ghost is dry, you can remove the mold. Then your ghost stands on its own! And that’s the basic premise.

I will walk you through it, but understand that you can use this idea to make cheesecloth ghosts any size you like. Ideally you could make one as large as a person if you could make the mold big enough (please don’t use a real human).

There are four basic steps to this Stiffy ghost project. You’re going to make your mold, cut and wet the cheesecloth, drape it over the form (let dry), and then remove the mold to finish.

You can add glow in the dark paint or eyes and mouth when all is said and done if you like. I find it makes the ghost more kid friendly somehow. However you want to decorate it, I’ll leave that up to you!

Wax paper bowl scissors Mod Podge stiffy and cheesecloth

Gather These Supplies

  • Cheesecloth – I bought a pack from Hobby Lobby that was 6 yards x 36″ wide
  • Mod Podge Stiffy
  • Aluminum foil
  • Wax paper
  • Styrofoam ball (or other round object for the head)
  • Old coffee creamer bottle (or something similar for the body)
  • Scissors
  • Bowl
  • Glow in the dark paint (optional)
  • Black Sharpie or cardstock (optional)
  • Dropcloth (optional)

Tips and Thoughts for This Project

There are two things you should know before you get started. First of all, it’s a good idea to have a plastic drop cloth to cover your work surface so that you don’t get Stiffy everywhere. Note that you can reuse the drop cloth for other projects. Just let everything dry and fold it up.

Secondly, you’re welcome to get creative with the body of your cheesecloth ghost. I used a coffee creamer bottle with the top cut off. Both the arms and head fit nicely and make it easy.

But you can use a variety of items. You could even use a dowel rod with a base. You just need something to support the head and arms – something stable so that the mold holds while the ghost is drying.

Make cheesecloth ghosts with Mod Podge Stiffy

If you choose to paint, you can use acrylic paint and go right over the top of the fabric stiffener. You can use paint pens to draw on eyes and a mouth. I chose to leave mine plain. I don’t know – it seems more spooky that way!

  • Aluminum foil
  • Wax paper
  • Styrofoam ball
  • Old coffee creamer bottle – with top removed
  • Glow in the dark paint optional
  • Black Sharpie or cardstock optional
  • Drop cloth optional

Instructions

  • Tear a piece of wax paper off of the roll and place over the ball. Twist the end and set aside.
Styrofoam ball covered in wax paper
  • Tear off two feet of foil and wrap into a tube. Cover the tube with wax paper so that the stiffener doesn't stick to it. These will be the arms (you can add more foil to make the arms longer).
Covering the aluminum foil roll with wax paper
  • Twist the ends of the arms so they don't come unraveled. Bend in the middle and stick into the coffee container. Shape so the arms don't come out and they stay straight.
    Mold to make a ghost
  • Place the head on top of the container with the twisted portion down inside.
Hand placing a ball on top of the ghost mold
  • Cut three lengths of cheesecloth (about 18", or to cover your mold) using the scissors. Before cutting, check to make sure the pieces will be long enough to cover the mold.
Cutting cheesecloth with a pair of scissors
  • Place in a bowl and squeeze fabric stiffener on top to cover. Coat the cheesecloth thoroughly with stiffener. You want enough to get it pretty wet without making it "stiffener soup."
Two hands pressing cheesecloth into the fabric stiffener in a bowl
  • Pick out one piece of cloth at a time and squeeze out excess stiffener. Drape over the top of the mold. You'll see that the ends curl naturally quite nicely. It's pretty lightweight so your mold should hold it easily.
First layer of cheesecloth draped over the mold
  • Repeat with the second and third pieces of cheesecloth, arranging them slightly differently as you place to cover areas that you didn't get before. Let dry overnight.
Second layer of cheesecloth draped over the mold
  • Remove the mold from the bottom of the ghost. You can help assist with the process using a hair dryer if needed. Make sure all parts are completely dry before displaying.
Third layer of cheesecloth draped over the mold
  • Paint with glow in the dark paint and add eyes and a mouth if desired!
    Glowing cheesecloth ghost

Video

Notes

If you find there is a lot of excess Stiffy in the cheesecloth, squeeze some of it out into the bowl. You want it pretty soaked, but it doesn't need to be dripping. That will just take longer to dry.
If you find it's not drying in some areas, let the top dry more and then move it as soon as you can to help (because sometimes the fabric stiffener pools as it dries and the base stays especially wet).

I hope you enjoyed this Stiffy ghost! Let me know what you think about this Halloween craft for adults in the comments! I hope you’ll also check out the following projects:

Halloween Crafts for Kids they'll love

Anyone that knows me in person knows that Halloween is my favorite holiday! There are so many things I love about it. I actually prefer a holiday where the focus isn’t on gifts, it’s on dressing up and candy.

Not that I have anything against gifts, but the pressure is off on Halloween as far as I’m concerned. It’s less about stress and more about having a great time.

One of the best parts about Halloween besides candy is the creativity. I absolutely love Halloween arts and crafts for kids! There’s a lot of orange paper, googly eyes, and glow in the dark glitter.

Some of my favorite supplies are used during Halloween, and when else are you going to combine orange with purple and black?

I decided to pull together my favorite tutorials and share them with you in this collection.

Most of these easy Halloween kids crafts can be made in 30 minutes to an hour using items that you have around the house! No special tools or skills are required.

So what can you expect with these Halloween craft ideas? You’ll be using a lot of recycled materials like jars, toilet paper rolls, milk jugs, and more. It’s nice to be able to dig through your recycle bin and grab free surfaces, right?

As far as supplies, you’ll use pretty standard kids craft supplies like Mod Podge, Duck Tape, pipe cleaners, paper plates, popsicle sticks, etc.

I’m sure if you have children you have a lot of these items on hand, and if you don’t, it won’t be too expensive to grab some goodies from Amazon or the craft store in preparation.

One thing I can guarantee about these Halloween crafts for kids? As an adult, you’re going to love these too.

I know you’re thinking I’m crazy, but trust me – take a peek at this list and you’re going to have just as much fun as your littles with these ideas.

Honestly, I feel like I’ve said too much already. It’s time to dive into the crafts. Simply scroll down and check out the list below, then let me know your favorites in the comments!
