Skills Required. Beginner. Even if you’re a newbie crafter, you can do this project. You’ll do simple staining, cutting a stencil, painting, and Mod Podging to seal and add glitter accents.

Easy Give Thanks Sign is So Budget Friendly!

I love working on DIY signs for the house. I have a Silhouette cutting machine and it really makes it easy for me, but you can always find great stencils at the craft store if you don’t have a cutting machine.

I decided I wanted to make a new fall sign for the house that also worked for Thanksgiving. I made a scrapbook paper fall sign last year and was really pleased with how it turned out.

Thanksgiving give thanks sign

So I decided on making a new give thanks sign for this year, but adding a touch of glitter! Gotta LOVE some glitter, right??! Learn how to make this DIY Thanksgiving sign below.

Gather These Supplies

  • Mod Podge Matte
  • Wood – any size
  • Stencil or cutting machine and vinyl
  • Stain
  • Sandpaper
  • Paint
  • Glitter
  • Paintbrush
  • Rags (optional)

Thanks for stopping by! I hope this give thanks sign inspires you to make one of your own. It doesn’t have to be a fall themed sign, it can be any kind of sign!

I just wanted to show how easy it is to make your own without spending a lot of money at a store.

  • Stain the wood using either rags or a sponge brush. Rub on until you get the desired effect and let dry. I went over the wood twice with a sponge brush. It dried in an hour.

  • Use your cutting machine to create a "Give Thanks" stencil out of vinyl.

  • Attach the stencil to wood and smooth. Fill in the "Give Thanks" using a sponge brush and paint. Let dry.
Painting a give thanks stencil with a spouncer brush and white acrylic paint
  • On the accents, apply Mod Podge to the stencil with a sponge brush. Sprinkle glitter on top and let dry. Brush away the excess.
Add Mod Podge and glitter to a give thanks Thanksgiving sign
  • Pull the vinyl off the wood and touch up any areas that need it. Let dry completely before displaying.

Notes

  • Costs vary greatly for this project! I already had everything on hand but the wood and the graphic. Scrap wood is great for this project.
  • You can always use a regular stencil to make your “give thanks” letters if you don’t have a cutting machine.
  • Here is a very detailed post I did about adding the vinyl for another sign I did.

diy thanksgiving sign

Thanksgiving is time of warmth, gratitude, and creative crafts! Are you ready to add a touch of handmade charm to your Thanksgiving decor this year?

Well, grab that old sign or piece of wood you were thinking about tossing out, because I’m going to show you how to transform it into a delightful DIY Thanksgiving sign that’s as easy as pie (and nearly as satisfying).

Imagine this: a cozy corner of your home adorned with a sign that not only adds to the festive atmosphere but also boasts your crafting prowess.

It’s not just any sign; it’s your creation, infused with your style and effort. Whether you’re a seasoned DIYer or a newbie looking to dip your toes into the world of crafts, this project is tailor-made for you.

Make a simple Thanksgiving sign

This project requires just a few simple materials like fabric, wood stakes, and Mod Podge. And the best part? No power tools needed, making this craft as beginner-friendly as it gets.

You’ll cut, glue, and smooth your way to a beautiful background. Then, with a bit of painting and cutting (don’t worry, I’ll walk you through each step), you’ll frame your masterpiece in wood, giving it that farmhouse charm that screams ‘Thanksgiving’.

But what really brings this Thanksgiving sign to life is the vinyl letters – choose a heartfelt holiday message or maybe just a simple ‘Give Thanks‘. Whether you pick up some stickers or cut your own, I’ve got tips to make sure they stick and look great.

DIY farmhouse Thanksgiving sign

So, why not make this holiday a little more personal? Gather your supplies, clear out an afternoon, and let’s create something that’ll make your Thanksgiving not just thankful, but crafty too. Ready to get started? Read on, and let’s make some decor magic happen!

Gather These Supplies

  • Seasonal sign – the dollar store is great for these if you don’t have one
  • Wood stakes
  • Stain or craft paint – brown
  • Canvas or linen fabric
  • Scissors
  • Mod Podge
  • Flat paintbrush
  • Saw
  • Miter box
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Vinyl letters – buy or cut your own

Tips and Thoughts for This Project

Get a free SVG file and printable for the graphic we used here (for personal use only).

I used square wood stakes for the frame, but you can use square wood dowels as well.

No stain? No problem! Use watered-down brown paint as a ‘stain’. I mixed my brown with some yellow and black to create the brown tone that I wanted. Brush it onto the wood pieces and don’t forget to paint the ends as well.

You can use any Mod Podge formula depending on the finish you’d like. I recommend one of the basics like, Gloss, Satin, or Matte.

DIY Thanksgiving sign with farmhouse style

This simple sign comes together quickly in an afternoon – customize it with your own wording or even add embellishments! Use it as a standing sign to add to a mantel, or add some hanging hardware to convert it into a wall hanging or even door decor. Enjoy making your own sign with the how to card below:

Ingredients

  • Seasonal sign
  • Wood stakes
  • Stain or craft paint brown
  • Canvas or linen fabric
  • Mod Podge
  • Vinyl letters buy or cut your own

Instructions

  • Measure your sign and cut your fabric to size. I like leaving a bit as a border to fold back or trim as needed.
    Cut-Fabric-to-Size
  • Cover the sign with Mod Podge and attach your fabric. Use a brayer to flatten it down and ensure that there are no ripples or lifted areas. Wait for that to dry.
    Cover-Sign-with-Mod-Podge
  • Once dry, cut the excess fabric and then cover the top again with Mod Podge. Wait for that layer to dry.
cutting the fabric around the edges and sealing with Mod Podge
  • Cut the wood first. I measured the longest sides and cut that with a miter box. For the short sides, I measured and then subtracted the thickness of both the long pieces of wood to get the correct fit. Then stain all pieces with paint and let dry.
    Cut-and-Stain-Wood-Frame
  • Time to add your vinyl sentiment. Use store bought vinyl stickers or cut your own with a die-cutting machine such as a Silhouette or Cricut. Use a scraper or brayer to adhere it firmly to the fabric surface.
    Add-Your-Sentiment
  • If your vinyl is having problems sticking or it’s peeling off easy, add a layer of Mod Podge on top to secure it in place. Wait for that to dry before proceeding to the final step.
    Cover-Sentiment-with-Mod-Podge
  • Finally, attach your wood frame using hot glue, making sure everything is aligned.

DIY Thanksgiving Napkin Rings

Do you want to add a little something extra to your Thanksgiving dinner table this year? Whether it’s for family or company, I have the perfect DIY projects for you.

Thanksgiving napkin rings are easy and inexpensive to make – so that you can spend less time planning out the decor and more time in the kitchen getting the food ready!

When making napkin rings, there are a few things I always like to keep in mind:

Keep them inexpensive. Use as many recycled materials as possible (ribbon scraps, toilet paper rolls, leftover clay, etc.).

Raid your stash. Look for embellishments like adhesive letters, glitter, buttons, or anything else that you could attach that would be perfect for the holidays.

Combine materials. Use paint, hot glue, Mod Podge, paper, glitter glue, yarn, a die cutter . . . or whatever else you have to make your rings.

If you think about it, a napkin ring is just a circle that holds a piece of fabric. They are usually around 2″ in diameter, so there’s not that much to making them. They’re quick, and perfect for crafters of all skill levels!

Below are 25 cute napkin ring ideas for your Thanksgiving table. Not only would they would be great for the holiday, but you can use them to set the table all fall. Some of these are versatile enough to use all year long.

So, check out these projects and let me know what you think.

These DIY Thanksgiving signs are perfect home decor for the holidays! Create an inviting environment for guests with one of these unique projects. There are a variety of styles including farmhouse, rustic, modern, and more.

DIY Thanksgiving signs for your home

We love making signs around here (see fall, Christmas)! Seriously, if I’m going to make any kind of display for the holidays, there needs to be some sort of a message as part of the “ambiance.”

It’s especially important if you’re having guests over. What kind of mood do you want to set? Mine is usually silly and sarcastic, to be honest.

But for Thanksgiving, I do like to go with a bit of a softer message. Because genuinely I’m thankful for a lot of things that I have.

I feel like even though I’ve had it rough at some points in my life, I’m a pretty lucky person. God/the universe looks out for me!

So today I’m happy to share with you these DIY Thanksgiving signs! Most of these use very simple supplies and are perfect for beginners. They come on a variety of backgrounds, including wood cutouts, pallet wood, and even wood slices.

Tips for Making A Thanksgiving Sign

Pick your message first. The message you select will determine the size you need for the background of your sign.

What do you want to say to your guests? Do you want it funny or more serious? Here are some cute options I’ve noticed:

  • In Everything Give Thanks
  • Let Our Lives Be Full of Both Thanks and Giving
  • Give Thanks and Eat Pie
  • Leftovers Are For Quitters
  • Gobble ‘Til You Wobble
  • Get Your Fat Pants Ready

Look for salvaged or reusable materials for your background. Something about Thanksgiving typically says “rustic” to me . . . pallet wood, an old board, wood scraps, even a wood slice. Don’t be afraid to grab something old and make it new again!

Embrace chalk paint and chalkboard paint. Both of these can give a very rustic look to a project, which is perfect for Thanksgiving signs. You can also easy distress chalk paint (plus it’s typically no-prep).

Don’t worry if you don’t have a Cricut. A lot of signs use cutting machines, but if you don’t have one, check Etsy.

There are designs already cut for sale (search your saying), or there are people who will cut for you to the size you want.

Learn how to make wood Thanksgiving decor using wood pumpkins, paint, Mod Podge, napkins, and other embellishments. Perfect for autumn!

Skills Required: Intermediate. It’s easy to paint the wood and add embellishments. The only challenging part is ironing the napkins into the Mod Podge, since napkins are fragile. It might take some practice, so work on a sample first.

Wood Thanksgiving Decor

I’d like to start with a little thankfulness story for today’s Thanksgiving craft. After I graduated from college, I had no idea what I was doing. I had just gotten a Forestry degree from the University of Washington, and I wasn’t really sure where to go next.

There were a lot of options. I had a professor who wanted to work together on a master’s degree program, and I also had a potential job offer from the US Forest Service (for a job that was “eh” in terms of appeal).

I also had a boyfriend, but things were rocky. It was time to start my life and figure it all out. Ah, the trials and tribulations of being 22 years old!

As a stop gap, I worked at a construction company for the summer with my mom’s friend Christie, who I’ve known since (almost) birth. She saw how much I was struggling and decided we would do an exercise together every single day.

What we did was quite simple, and we did it every morning right when I walked in the door: write down five things you are thankful for today. That’s it. That’s the assignment.

Thankful wood pumpkin decor for Thanksgiving

While it might seem too simple, you’d be surprised at how much your mood or demeanor can be determined for the day when you start off with what you are grateful for. It helps greatly!

It’s a great exercise that I stopped doing a long time ago, but it’s what I thought about when I made this wood Thanksgiving decor. I thought about those times with Christie, and everything I am grateful for this year. While life can be challenging, there’s always something to say “thanks” for.

Blessed wood pumpkin decor for Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving crafts just hit different, to be honest. They always make me sit and think about what I have. Maybe it’s because you’re working with words like “blessed,” so there’s a constant reminder. Either way, it’s very peaceful.

This year I decided to add this wood Thanksgiving decor to my holiday decorations based on some cute word embellishments I found at Dollar Tree. I knew that I wanted to make something with napkins, so that’s how this fall decor was born into the world. Here’s how you make it.

Thanksgiving Wood Decorations

Gather These Supplies

  • Wood cutouts – I used chunky ones from Michaels
  • Craft paint – white and the other colors of your choice
  • Mod Podge Gloss
  • Inspirational words – mine are from Dollar Tree
  • Twine
  • Napkins
  • Parchment paper
  • Hot glue gun and hot glue
  • Paintbrushes
  • Craft knife
  • Scissors
  • Sandpaper (fine grit) or a nail file
  • Mini iron
  • Craft glue

Paint the Cutouts

Paint all of the wood cutouts with white. There’s two reasons for this. First, you’re going to leave the front white because that is where the napkin is going and you want the design to pop off.

Two unfinished wood pumpkin shapes

The second reason is because I’m noticing that sometimes with the wood it takes a lot of coats to cover, and sometimes the wood color even ends up coming through the paint and napkins (maybe due to how the wood is produced?). I like to prime the wood so the pieces look their best.

Paint both pumpkins, all sides and edges, and let dry.

Painting a wood pumpkin with white paint

Add the Mod Podge

Once the paint has dried, paint two coats of Mod Podge over the front of the wood pieces. You will paint a coat, making sure to get all the way to edges, and let dry. Then you’ll paint a second coat and let dry.

Pumpkin drying with wet Mod Podge on top

Don’t paint the stem with Mod Podge. You’re going to leave that to paint over with a different color. Although if you already painted the stem with Mod Podge, don’t worry – it’s fine.

Painting a second layer of Mod Podge on top of the wood pumpkin

Let the Mod Podge dry.

Apply the Napkins

While the Mod Podge is drying, separate the layers from your napkins. The reason you’re going to do this is because napkins are made of 2-3 layers typically, and you just want the top layer with the design. If you use the napkin without separating it, it will wrinkle because the layers will operate independently of each other.

Separating napkin layers

Cut the napkin slightly larger than the wood shape, and gently rub the layers together to separate. You can also use a piece of Scotch tape in one corner on the white portion and pull.

The wood piece should be on your work surface with the Mod Podge side up. Place the napkin down on the pumpkin (for example) and situate it the way you like. Turn your mini craft iron up to the top level (level three). If you use a real iron, go to medium heat with no steam.

Napkin layer place don the top of the pumpkin shape

I like to have an iron just for crafts.

Place a piece of parchment paper on top of the wood shape with the napkin on top, and run the craft iron across the top several times. While you are doing this, the Mod Podge is melting below the napkin, and the napkin is adhering.

Ironing the napkin down on top of the parchment paper

Keep going until the napkin is fully adhered. It should just take a minute or two on a surface this small. Lift up and check under the parchment paper to see if you missed anywhere, especially around the edges

Once you’re done, remove the parchment paper and let cool. It should be pretty smooth.

Trim and Seal

This is where the sandpaper or nail file comes in handy. If you lightly sand the edges of your wood piece, the napkin will separate very easily.

Sanding the napkin off the edges of the pumpkin

This is how the edge looks as you sand, and the napkin just pulls away. Many people use a nail file or emery board from the dollar store for this purpose and say it works great.

Pulling away the napkin at the edge of the pumpkin

Remove all the excess napkin from around your wood Thanksgiving decor.

Paint and Seal

Now that the napkins are down on the fronts of your wood, you can paint the stems. I used a color to coordinate with my napkins. I left my edges white, but you can paint those as well. Let dry.

Painting the stem with burgundy paint

Once the stems are dry, paint the fronts of your pumpkins with Mod Podge and let dry completely.

Applying Mod Podge over the top of the napkin

Add Embellishments

I feel like twine always adds a nice rustic touch to projects, so I added it at the top with a hot glue gun. Just trim a piece of twine, hot glue it to the back, and then start wrapping and gluing.

Winding twine around the pumpkin stem

Here are the words I purchased from the dollar store – I just love them!

Package of Thanksgiving words from Dollar Tree

Apply craft glue to the back . . .

Glue placed on the back of the word

Then add to the front and let dry.

Word glued to the front of the wood pumpkin

Let everything dry and you are ready to roll. And if there are a few wrinkles in your napkins, just leave them, and appreciate them as an imperfection. Be thankful for life’s imperfections and that we have the ability to craft and make things that are wrinkled. At least this is what I’m telling myself 🙂 Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving Crafts for Adults

I think we can all admit something to ourselves that we maybe haven’t wanted to admit – and I hope you’ll hear me out.

Thanksgiving gets lost sometimes.

“But Amy,” I can hear you saying, “it’s my favorite holiday. I never forget about it!” Which, I know what you mean. Most people love the food and the family aspect of turkey day.

But what I feel doesn’t get enough attention about the big day? The crafts. Actually I don’t feel it – I know it to be true. Because my blog stats tell me everything I need to know.

You guys love Halloween and Christmas, but Thanksgiving? We’re not as into it. And I’m guilty too! Guilty as charged.

Even when we do craft for the holiday, it’s typically kids’ crafts. But I want that to change, which is why I wrote this post about Thanksgiving crafts for adults!

There’s actually quite a bit to make for Thanksgiving, and some very creative folks have great ideas ranging from decorating to gifts to what I like to call “just for fun.”

If you’re ready to get crafty for the holiday, don’t hold back. I’ve promised myself I’m going to do more and give Thanksgiving the attention it deserves. I will post all my projects, too!

Please enjoy the DIY projects below and let me know what you think in the comments. Happy Turkey Day!

Use Mod Podge on clay in this gift tag project, that works well for place settings as well. Perfect for fall and SO easy to make.

Skills Required: None. You’ll Mod Podge on polymer clay (you can use air dry too), using it as a sealer after you press the leaf and paint. It’s a very simple project; kids will love it too!

Use Mod Podge on Clay Gift Tags (So Easy!)

I’m not much of a Thanksgiving decorator. It’s that holiday that gets smashed in between Halloween and Christmas, and is sometimes kind of forgotten.

Instead of getting out entirely new decor or crafting something up that can only be used for a few weeks, I like to think of transitional projects.

These little clay leaf charms are the perfect example of a transitional project. They look so elegant and simple on your Thanksgiving table, but can also be used for a Christmas ornament later!

I love the organic feel of these clay gift tags. These would work well with any type of decor or tablescape – modern, farmhouse, industrial, rustic. They make great DIY napkin rings!

They are so neutral and understated . . . I love them. If you want to, you can customize the color of the paint to any that you like.

Mod Podge on Air Dry Clay

It’s really easy to use Mod Podge and clay together (including polymer and air dry). Mod Podge is a great sealer for clay, which is what makes it so perfect for these charms/gift tags.

Before we dive into the tutorial, let’s go over a few basics of this project.

Type of Clay to Use

For these clay gift tags I used polymer clay, and I recommend either Fimo or Sculpey clay. I usually buy based on whatever color is my favorite at the time and what’s on sale! Keep in mind with the polymer clay, you’ll have to bake it.

If you want to avoid baking (maybe kids are doing this project), then you can use air dry clay. It usually takes anywhere from 24 – 48 hours to dry.

Real or Fake Leaves?

You can use either real or fake leaves to make the imprint on your clay. Just remember that no matter what you use, it’s got the possibility of getting clay on it.

Sometimes it can be easier to just buy faux leaves depending on where you live. The dollar store has some great options for faux leaves and they are perfect for using in this project.

Mod Podge Antique Matte, real leaves, and Fimo soft clay in white

Mod Podge on Clay Gift Tags

Gather These Supplies

  • Antique Mod Podge – if you can’t find this formula, regular Mod Podge will work; you can add a little stain or acrylic paint to it for the same effect
  • Polymer clay
  • Leaves – real or faux
  • Black paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Rolling pin
Rolling a leaf into clay

Step One: Using a dowel rod or the end of a paint brush, roll out a piece of clay. Press the leaf into the clay, vein side down and roll it again, making sure that the leaf is imprinted onto the clay.

Note: I rolled the clay out on my Silpat baking mat, since I planned to bake the clay immediately after making the imprint. If you do this, make sure to thoroughly clean the mat before putting food on it again.

Poke a hole in the top of your clay gift tag

Step Two: Make a hole in the top using a toothpick or skewer. Don’t forget to do this before baking!

Clay piece with a leaf design

Step Three: Bake the clay pieces according to the package instructions.

Clay painted with Mod Podge and drying

Step Four: Once the clay pieces are cooled, brush on a layer of Antique Mod Podge. This will give them a sheen, but also add a bit of a warm hue which is perfect for fall decor.

If you don’t have access to Antique Mod Podge, just use regular Mod Podge. It will seal your gift tag, you just won’t have the warm hue.

Painting a stamped clay piece with watered down acrylic paint

Step Five: Once the Mod Podge is dry, water down some acrylic paint or use black watercolor and brush on the paint to the leaf so that the paint will sink down into all the veins.

Wipe away paint

Step Six: Allow the paint to dry, then take a damp cloth and wipe of the black paint, leaving behind only the paint that sank into the veins and grooves.

Wipe until you get the desired effect, and you can always add more paint back in if necessary.

Finished Thanksgiving place setting with clay leaf tags

Step Seven: Tie a string around the leaf charms and add them to your Thanksgiving place settings!

Make Clay Gift Tags with Pressed Leaves

I love how these turned out. Beautiful and classic with just a touch of modern! The Mod Podge on clay really seals the tags and ensures they will last for years.

Pretty clay leaf tags for a fall tablescape

This leaf charms craft is also a project that kids can easily help with, which are the best kinds of crafts in my opinion!

I hope you will try your hand at these little clay charms – and maybe experiment with different colors or sheens of Mod Podge to put your own twist on it! Now that you know how to Mod Podge on clay, what are you going to make?

This project is part of our fall crafts for adults, Dollar Tree fall crafts, and Thanksgiving crafts for adults! If you like these clay gift tags turned Thanksgiving napkin rings, I’d love for you to check out these other holiday ideas as well:

I really do love Thanksgiving. Kind of the perfect holiday to me and I have so many great memories associated with the big dinner (and the prep for it).

I wanted to come up with a project that reflected that and when my friend Geralyn found the perfect Shakespeare quote it all came together.

“Small Cheer and Great Welcome Make a Merry Feast.” Isn’t that just spot on? It’s from The Comedy of Errors and, to me that perfectly sums up my favorite holiday.

So I got to work and designed the background and text and then applied it to some scrap lumber to create a cool sign! Here’s what I did to make this Thanksgiving craft.

Merry Feast Thanksgiving Sign

For this project I used:

Thanksgiving sign supplies
  • Scrap ½” plywood cut to 10.5” long by 3” high panels
  • Two scrap pieces of wood for connecting the panels – cut to 11.5” long
  • Matte Mod Podge
  • Wood Stain
  • Screws – 8
  • A print out of the text – you can download HERE

I used some tools as well that are very helpful but also optional:

Tools
  • Drill (and appropriate drill bits)
  • Sandpaper
  • Two new (to me) applicators from the makers of Mod Podge:
    • Brush Applicator
    • Rolling Applicator
  • Scissors

To get started, stain the edges of the wood panels and just a little bit of the front side. After the stain dries, sand them lightly.

Stain and Sand

Apply the Mod Podge using the rolling applicator. This was a new tool for me personally, and I must say it worked really well. It made application smooth and easy to control (and cleaning it up was easy too). You can also use a brush, but this is really easy!

Apply Mod Podge

Lay down the graphics on the Thanksgiving sign, smoothing out the air bubbles as you go.

After giving it a bit of time to dry, give the edges of the paper a light sanding just to give it a bit of character (this step is totally optional).

Sand Edges

Flip all the panels over, line them up and screw on the scrap wood connectors.

(Tip: make sure the panels are in the right order or you’ll have to take the whole Thanksgiving sign apart and try again. Don’t ask me how I know this . . . )

Attach Rails

Flip the sign back over and seal the front with Mod Podge. Apply a full coat, let dry for 15 – 20 minutes, and then repeat with a second coat.

For that I used the Brush Applicator, which worked like a dream for laying the Mod Podge over a large surface smoothly and cleanly. I think it may be a new favorite of mine!!

Seal

And I was done. Let dry for 12 hours before hanging or displaying.

Now all I need is some turkey! . . . and someone to cook it.

Easy DIY Thankful sign

Your DIY Thanksgiving sign is complete. Happy holidays! Some notes in this project:

  • If you want to do your own thing, the backgrounds alone without the text are HERE.
  • If you don’t want to use a drill and screws, a hot glue gun will probably work just fine as long as the boards aren’t too heavy. You could also use wood glue.

DIY Napkin Rings from Paper Towel Rolls

Do you ever save your paper towel rolls thinking you may be able to use them someday? Well, I do . . . with kids I’m always planning some sort of craft I may or may get to.

So if you’re a hoarder saver like me, why not make napkin rings out of paper towel and toilet paper rolls for Thanksgiving?

These DIY napkin rings are made by wrapping a paper roll with burlap ribbon and topping it off with a Scrabble tile with each guests’ initial.

You’ll be recycling as well as making something pretty and customized for each of your guests.

Gather These Supplies

Measure 2 3/8″ approximately down each tube and make pencil marks. Cut with scissors. You’ll want to use the 2 3/8″ section as your napkin ring.

Take about six inches of your 2 1/2 inch burlap ribbon and spread lots of Mod Podge all over it thickly. If you apply it thickly, it will help to harden the napkin rings when they dry.

The ribbon will overlap slightly at each end to help cover up the recycled tube within. Leave your napkin rings to dry.
