Learn how to make a resin frame using epoxy and Legos! This resin picture frame is so easy – what will you put in your creation?

Skills Required: Intermediate. I recommend having some experience with resin so that you’re easily able to organize the Legos and get the results you want.

DIY resin frame made with Legos

Embarking on a DIY adventure is like dipping your toes into a sea of creativity and surprise. And oh, have we been swimming in some fantastic waters lately! And by that I mean, resin crafts.

From the mesmerizing swirls of ocean resin art to the sparkling allure of geode coasters, our journey has been nothing short of magical.

We’ve even dabbled in preserving the delicate beauty of dried flowers within the glossy embrace of resin, transforming them into timeless pieces of jewelry.

Now, as we venture further into this world of resin, I’m thrilled to show you a new, exciting project: crafting a DIY resin frame.

But not just any frame—it’s a picture frame with a playful twist, where colorful Legos seem to float magically within its borders.

Wood frame with white paint Legos and resin

Our next creative endeavor involves embedding Legos into a resin picture frame, making it a unique piece that’s sure to capture hearts and spark conversations.

As it turns out there are TWO ways to make an epoxy resin frame. In both scenarios, you can embed objects in the resin:

  • Make it entirely of resin using a silicone mold like this one
  • Use a wood frame (or similar) as a base, tape the frame, and pour the resin on top

This picture frame uses the second method. The difference between the two is that the first method uses the mold only, and the resin is poured in and hardened.

In the second method, you’ll need to tape around the frame to create a cavity for pouring. As I said, in both methods you can embed objects. The video in this post shows you how.

Here’s how you’re going to make a resin frame . . . it’s easier than you think!

  • Mod Podge Resin or similar
  • Wooden frame
  • Legos
  • FolkArt paint – Wicker White
  • Respirator
  • Gloves
  • Cups
  • Craft sticks for stirring
  • Torch
  • Painter’s tape – 1 1/2”
  • Sandpaper
  • Paintbrushes

If you desire, you can sand and polish the resin frame using the instructions here.

Equipment

  • Respirator
  • Gloves
  • Cups
  • Craft sticks for stirring
  • Torch
  • Sandpaper

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Paint your frame with Wicker White and let dry.
  • Follow instructions on resin packaging for mixing. You'll want to mix 4 oz. of resin. Use a separate measuring cup for each part. Once equal amounts of both parts are measured, pour them into a mixing cup. Gently stir the two parts together for 3 minutes. When you start to stir, cloudy swirls will appear.
  • Attach the Legos to the frame, brushing a little bit of resin on the bottom of each Lego and securing to the frame. Let set for 20 minutes. Leave the rest of the resin in the cup, as you have about 30 minutes working time.
  • Toward the end of the 20 minutes, make a wall around the frame with painter's tape. Press it all the way around the frame, as closely and tightly as possible so none of the resin leaks.
  • Pour a layer of resin onto the frame. Use the torch to remove any bubbles. Allow 24 hours for the resin to harden.
  • Remove the tape. Round the edges with sandpaper. Remove any dust. Tape off the back of the frame to keep the resin from running over onto the back.
  • Mix the remainder of the resin, about 4 oz., according to the instructions you used the first time. Pour resin over the entire frame again and let the resin go over the edges to cover the sides. Let set for several hours.
  • Remove tape from the back of frame. Let the resin completely set overnight.

Video

Notes

While mixing, make sure to scrape the sides and bottom of the mixing cup to fully incorporate the two parts. Continue to mix until the cloudy swirls no longer appear and the mixture is clear.

In this post I’ll show you how to do paper napkin decoupage on a wood frame using the iron on method! This is easy enough for beginners.

Skills Required: Beginner. It helps to have experience with Mod Podge to do this project. You’ll be applying it to a frame, then ironing a napkin down. I’ll walk you through the process.

Paper Napkin Decoupage on a Wood Frame

There are a variety of ways to use Mod Podge to apply paper or fabric to surfaces. One of the most common ways is to apply it directly to a surface, then apply the paper/other material down and let dry. Then add a top coat of Mod Podge and let it dry again.

That’s the way I decoupage most often here on the blog.

But the thing is, that works better for thicker materials and fabrics – and not as well for thinner materials like tissue paper, napkins, wrapping paper, etc.

Those items tend to wrinkle when they are applied to wet Mod Podge. Sometimes crafters use plastic wrap to assist in smoothing, but thinner items can still tear under the plastic wrap without a very careful touch.

SO I’m really excited to show you something frequently called the “iron on method” – and in this case, we’re going to do paper napkin decoupage to a wood frame.

how to decoupage a paper napkin on a wood frame

This method, which allows the Mod Podge to dry BEFORE applying the napkin, is a great solution when you just can’t decoupage your items without wrinkles. When the items are thinner – this is super easy.

For this paper napkin decoupage, you’ll be painting the wood frame, then applying Mod Podge and letting it dry. Then you’ll iron on the napkin, activating the Mod Podge below. The napkin will adhere to the surface.

You might need to practice this technique a few times to master it, but it’s way easier than other methods. Once you see how smooth the surface turns out . . . you’re going to get hooked.

First of all, here’s what you’re going to need. Then you can jump right in and get crafting!

Gather These Supplies

  • Wood frame of your choice
  • White acrylic paint
  • Mod Podge – any formula
  • Decorative paper napkin
  • Paper flowers
  • Craft glue or hot glue
  • Mini craft iron
  • Parchment paper
  • Emery board

Tips and Thoughts for This Project

You don’t *have* to paint the frame white, however, it makes the colors of the napkin pop. It’s also easy to do, so I always do it. You can use spray paint, but craft paint is cheaper and just as fast with a roller.

I didn’t seal the top of the napkins with Mod Podge – it tends to make them wrinkle. If you do seal with Mod Podge and the napkins wrinkle, you can place parchment down and iron over the top again.

Instructions

  • Paint the frame using white craft paint. Roll on one side, let dry, and flip over. Paint other side and let dry.
Rolling white paint onto a heart frame using a foam roller
  • Apply a coat of Mod Podge to the wood; don't do the edges. Let dry 15-20 minutes and repeat.
Applying two coats of Mod Podge to the top of the white painted wood frame
  • While the Mod Podge is drying, separate the napkin from the bottom layers. You can use tape to help. You just want the top layer with the design.
    Separating floral napkin layers
  • Place the napkin down onto the frame. Place a piece of parchment paper on top of the napkin, and run the craft iron across the top several times. While you are doing this, the Mod Podge is melting below the napkin, and the napkin is adhering. Keep going until the napkin is fully adhered, including the edges.
Ironing the floral napkin onto the picture frame
  • Let the frame cool after ironing. Use an emery board to gently sand away the excess napkin. Sanding at an angle works very well. Continue until all the extra napkin is removed.

  • Use craft glue to adhere the embellishments. Let dry completely before adding a photo and displaying.

This Mod Podge tissue paper frame is perfect for whipping up quickly and adding color to your home. So easy, beginning crafters will enjoy this project.

Skills Required: Beginner. This is a perfect idea for those who have never used Mod Podge before! The tissue paper shapes are small and easy to decoupage. This wood craft would even be fun and easy for kids.

tissue paper and mod podge on a frame

Hi there! This is Holly from Club Crafted again with a really simple decoupage DIY for making a geometric tissue paper frame. It’s a really fun craft – you use pieces of triangle shaped tissue paper layered together, like a collage, to create your finished piece.

(get more picture frame ideas here!)

This is such an easy project to whip up, and it adds some color in your home. Using classic Mod Podge and a variety of colored tissue paper, I made over a very inexpensive frame so that it looks like something new and special.

Now this photo frame stands out on our shelf, and I love the pop of color is adds to our neutral-colored office.

tissue paper, Mod Podge, scissors, and a frame

Tissue Paper Picture Frame

Gather These Supplies

Remove the Backing

Step 1: Remove the backing and glass of the frame so that you have only the wood (or plastic or metal) portion.

Cut the Tissue Paper

Step 2: Cut the colored tissue paper into small triangles. I found that the easiest way to do this quickly is to cut strips of tissue paper about 1.5 inch wide and then trim multiple triangles out of them, so they all appear to be slightly different proportions but still the same size. It doesn’t have to be perfect!

bottle of Mod Podge with tissue paper triangles and a paintbrush

Mod Podge and Add Tissue

Step 3: Paint a layer of Mod Podge Gloss on one section of the frame, starting at a corner. Place a cut piece of tissue paper over it and press in place.

Repeat with more pieces, layering on top of each other slightly and covering edges as well as the front of the frame. It’s OK to have lots of the original frame showing or completely cover it – your choice!

Adding tissue paper squares to a frame with Mod Podge

Step 4: Repeat this process all the way around the frame, painting Mod Podge on one section at a time so that the glue does not dry before you complete it.

Seal the Frame

Step 5: Once the pattern complete, paint a layer of Mod Podge over the entire frame to seal the tissue paper and let dry.

how to decorate a picture frame with tissue paper

Once dry, you can pop the glass, a photo and the backing in place and display in your home. This would also make a cute gift if you want to give someone a photo inside of a homemade frame!

These photo frame decoration ideas are perfect for beginners! Make a gift or unique home decor with these 40+ picture frame ideas.

Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate. Some of these techniques are easier than others, but none of them are exceptionally hard. Basic crafting skills are necessary, like using a paintbrush or punches and stenciling.

Photo frame decoration ideas

I’ve taken you on a stroll through the craft store, and we’ve learned how to decorate birdhouses, vases, trays, wood slices, wood blocks, boxes, plates, wood plaques, and more.

Today’s trip is going to be fun because you are going to the unfinished wood crafts section again – it’s time to decorate those cheap wooden picture frames!

If I’m being honest, my favorite are the $2 – $3 wooden frames (they usually hold 4″ x 6″ photos). These frames are inexpensive of course, but they are also the perfect size for decorating.

Tips for Decorating Frames

Don’t be afraid to jump in. If you mess up, simply purchase another frame and start again!

Where to Get Frames

You can get frames at Michaels, Jo-Ann, Walmart, Dollar Tree, and a variety of other smaller craft stores.

The best places to buy bulk frames are Amazon.com and Oriental Trading Company. The most inexpensive frames online are a little bit over $2, and if you have a large project (like summer camp, bible school, or a craft night) it’s more practical to buy them online anyway.

Let’s not forget thrift stores and the Goodwill. Check them regularly, especially if you are on a budget!

Craft Supplies

I use a variety of supplies to enhance the frames: scrapbook paper, paint, ribbon, stencils, Mod Podge, tissue paper, napkins, brads, wood shapes, and more.

I don’t use a separate sealer on top – just Mod Podge. And sometimes I use Dimensional Magic to accent certain areas and/or wood pieces for a little interest.

Preparing Your Surface

Sand the surface if desired. You can use the frame as-is or basecoat with paint first. It’s up to you!

Paint and Mod Podge to Use

You can use regular craft paint (like FolkArt) as well as spray paint or chalk paint. The only type of paint I would shy away from is latex, at least if you are going to use Mod Podge (they don’t work well together).

You don’t HAVE to paint, but I personally love to paint so I always do.

As far as Mod Podge formulas, you can use regular Matte, Satin, or Gloss depending on the finish you are going for.

Of course the Sparkle and Glitter formulas are a nice touch to a frame, especially during the holidays. It’s really up to you.

Decoupage Picture Frame with Mod Podge

If you’ve ever in your life stepped into a craft store, then I know you’ve seen those inexpensive wooden frames in the unfinished wood section. Would you believe that this is the first time I’ve ever bought and decorated one myself?

decoupage frame

It’s true. I don’t know why, but they’ve never appealed to me before . . . until I bought this gorgeous handmade paper from Paper Source.

This paper was just begging to be Mod Podged onto an unfinished frame . . . and I LOVE the results! Here’s how to make this DIY photo frame.

Paper, ribbon, frame, Mod Podge

Decoupage Frame

Gather These Supplies

  • Mod Podge Matte
  • Unfinished Wood Frame
  • Paper
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Fabric or felt for a bow (optional)
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks (optional)

Step 1: On the back of your paper, trace your frame (both the outside and the opening where the photo goes).

I found this gorgeous metallic gold, cream and gold paper from Paper Source, but you can use any scrapbook or wrapping paper you’d like for this. Cut out your shape.

Trace the frame on the back of the scrapbook paper with a pencil

Step 2: Apply Mod Podge to your decoupage picture frame. Lay your paper over the Mod Podge and press to adhere.

It helps to use a brayer or even a credit card (something with a flat edge) to help press your paper onto your frame.

But even if your paper wrinkles a bit, don’t worry about it – it’s hard to see, and even helps add a bit of character to your finished product.

Step 3: Gently sand the edges of your frame. This step is optional, but I feel like it gives your frame a more finished look.

Step 4: You’ll see that I had a length of cream ribbon in the “materials” photo, but I wasn’t happy with how the cream bow looked with the frame, so I went for gray felt instead.

Sometimes you just have to try different items to see what you like best! My felt piece was 3″ x 6″, and I folded it accordion style and hot glued the ends together.

I then took a piece of gold ribbon and wrapped it around the middle. I hot glued the bow to the frame and that was it!

I adore how this DIY photo frame turned out . . . I think it’ll have a home in my craft room for now so I can keep my littles’ faces nearby while I create!

  • On the back of the paper, trace the frame (both the outside and the opening where the photo goes).
  • Apply Mod Podge to the frame. Lay the paper over the Mod Podge and press to adhere. It helps to use a brayer to flatten the paper to the frame. Let dry 15 – 20 minutes.
  • Sand the edges where the paper meets to frame to smooth them and give your frame a more finished look.
  • Paint two final coats of Mod Podge on top of the frame, letting dry between each. Let dry completely.
  • If you choose to add a bow or embellishment, do it with the hot glue gun at this time.

Make a frame - using Mod Podge and wrapping paper

Hi readers! I’m Justine from the Sew Country Chick blog with a quick and easy Mod Podge project for you today. Today’s project is a quick space sprucer upper – a DIY frame!

Lately I’ve noticed at the hobby shop that there have been some very cute rolls of wrapping paper in the one dollar bin. The lightweight feel of the paper is perfect for Mod Podge projects!

While I love scrapbook paper, it doesn’t always work on projects that require wrapping around the edges, like this frame did.

DIY Wrapping Paper Frame

I highly recommend saving wrapping paper from all of your presents to use in crafts. Yes, you’ll be that person. But the good news is that when you need it, there it will be – for free.

One note for wrapping paper: it wrinkles more easily than a lot of scrapbook paper. I highly recommend doing a test on a scrap piece of wood or $1 frame before doing your final project.

If you find the Mod Podge is wrinkling the wrapping paper, you’ll want to mist the wrapping paper first (I use a spray bottle) with water the next time you try it. Wetting the wrapping paper before Mod Podging works – I can’t tell you why, but it does!

Here’s how to make a wrapping paper covered picture frame . . . with just a few supplies:

Wrapping paper frame step 1

Start with an unfinished frame like the one above. They are just a couple of dollars at the hobby shop, or you use an old frame you have sitting around collecting dust.

Wrapping paper frame step 2

Cut the wrapping paper with about a one inch overlap as pictured above. Add Mod Podge to the back of the frame and wrap the frame. Let dry.

Wrapping paper frame step 3

Once the paper is dry you can brush a couple of coats of Mod Podge over the frame to seal it and protect it. I used Mod Podge Antique to age the frame, I love how it does that, but normal Mod Podge will work just fine, too!

Isn’t this wrapping paper frame it pretty? Such an easy home decor idea – or it would make a perfect gift!

Mod Podge tissue paper frame

Wandering through the aisles of Michaels recently, I came onto the Valentine’s Day display. You know, the end cap or special section of the store where they have all the holiday goodies. I’m always drawn in, like a moth to a flame.

This particular time I noticed they had frames for $1 – with a heart shaped opening! The first thing I thought about was my niece, and how much fun we could have decorating a frame together.

And for only $1, the price can’t be beat. But what to use to cover the frame? I have a LOAD of tissue paper, so I decided to do a tissue paper project.

The nice thing about working with tissue paper is that it’s an inexpensive medium and kids love it. This project is so easy for children to make, and if you would like, you can join in the fun too! Here’s how I made my frame.

Frame with heart shaped opening and a circle punch

DIY Heart Frame

Gather These Supplies

  • Mod Podge Gloss
  • Tissue paper in valentine colors
  • Circle punch – 2”
  • Wood embellishments – Valentine-themed
  • Craft glue or hot glue gun
  • Scissors or craft knife
  • Paintbrush
  • Wood frame with heart cutout – only $1!
Painting the heart shaped frame with white craft paint

Paint the wood frame using Apple Barrel in White. Let dry.

Using the punch to punch out several circles from the tissue paper

Use the circle punch to punch out several circles from the tissue paper. Punch out several in different colors.

Mod Podge Sheer colors in pink in front of a pile of punched out tissue paper circles

Use the Mod Podge to adhere the tissue paper circles to the front of the frame. Starting in one corner, add Mod Podge to the frame, then put the circles down right on top.

*Note: In this picture I have Mod Podge Sheer Colors pictured . . . they are no longer available. Just use regular Mod Podge!

Mod Podging over the top of tissue paper circles

Keep adding Mod Podge and circles, overlapping as you go. Cover the entire front of the frame.

Wood heart frame completely covered in tissue paper dots

You can fold the edges of the tissue paper circles over the edge of the frame and Mod Podge them down – or you can let the frame dry and trim the edges using the scissors or craft knife.

Using hot glue on the back of a wood heart shape

Once the frame is dry, glue the wood valentine embellishments down on the frame using the craft glue.

Skills Required: Beginner. It helps to have experience with decoupage medium and stain, though any wrinkles you may experience just add to the texture of the frame.

Decoupage frame that looks like real leather

So sometimes we get a little girly around here and the Man Podgers have to bring us back to reality with tutorials that are acceptable for dudes. I have four brothers, so I get it.

If you are a dude, or even if you need a more masculine touch to your decor, I think you will appreciate this project from Walter.

Do you REALLY think you can make a decoupage frame look like faux leather? Yes, it can be done . . . with Mod Podge. Take a look for yourself and learn how I made this masculine decoupage picture frame.

I was inspired by a recent trip to Ralph Lauren; there were so many vintage leather props in the shop like mail carrier bags, belts and boots . . .

And thus a idea was born. “I can do that” with Mod Podge!

Brown bag decoupage finish on a frame

Brown Paper Bag Decoupage Frame

Gather These Supplies

Pile of rice paper, a paint brush, and Mod Podge Gloss

I used an old neglected flat frame. I first measured the width of the face of the frame – then I cut pieces of rice paper to fit the first layer of the frame.

For the second layer, you’ll prepare strips of paper bag by tearing with a ruler:

Man's hands tearing a paper bag along a ruler

Decoupage the rice paper onto the frame and let dry.

Crinkled the torn paper bag strips and then uncrinkle (not completely, but mostly). Use the round tip brush to apply the Mod Podge into the crevices and place on top of the decoupaged rice papered frame

***DO NOT SMOOTH OUT THE CRINKLES***

Press the paper right on top with your fingers and let dry.

Superfine Japan Colors in Rose Pink

When I studied Furniture Design in college, I used Superfine Japan Colors all the time. The quality and color(s) are very rich and elegant!

Take a plastic cup, fill it with a half a teaspoon of Rose Pink and a 1/4 cup of mineral spirits and stir until the paint is smooth and slightly watery. Use a sponge brush and apply over the decoupaged frame.

The results are out of this world! Some of the irregular patterns from the crinkling absorbed the paint  in an inconsistent pattern (that’s what you want; it gives more  of a rich leather look!).

Brown bag faux leather frame sealed in polycrylic

Superfine Japan Colors dry fast, though I would let it dry for at least a day before sealing with Polycrylic.

Make a decoupage frame that looks like real leather

Look at the gorgeous and masculine rich texture this frame has! I inserted a image from the Graphics Fairy and hung the faux leather frame above my dressing table. I could see this type of frame in Ralph Lauren shops . . . that would be nice, don’t you think?

Learn how to decorate your own photo frame with a piece of scrapbook paper and Mod Podge! This is so easy, anyone can do it.

How to Decorate Your Own Photo Frame

I’m crazy about Dimensional Magic lately, and I’m using on everything. So you’re gonna have to bear with me; I hope I won’t burn you out. But I just had to show you how it can be used on stuff other than jewelry.

This damask decoupage frame is super easy (hello beginners!), and the kicker is that the Dimensional Magic is on the wood accent piece in the center. You may have to enlarge the photo to see the detail, but the raised DM finish looks really neat in real life.

Who is that charming little one in the DIY photo frame? You’ll just have to guess. In the meantime, here are the decoupage frame project instructions.

DIY Scrapbook Paper Frame

Gather These Supplies

$1 unfinished wood frame from Michaels

I love these Michaels frames. They are only $1! You could do a wall of them for so cheap.

Tracing a wood frame with a pencil on the back of scrapbook paper

Flip the paper, design side down, and trace the frame onto it with your paper.

Cutting scrapbook paper with a craft knife

Cut the paper – I always use a craft knife on the inside piece.

Painting the wood embellishment with aqua craft paint

Paint your wood accent with the color of your choice. I used Aqua. I hope you are super impressed with my photo “skillz” as I focus on my fingers rather than the wood piece. Allow to dry.

Adding Mod Podge to the front of a frame

Paint your frame edges and back with Parchment and allow to dry. Then add Mod Podge to the front of the wood frame and then smooth down the paper. Let dry for 15 – 20 minutes.

Add Mod Podge to the front of the scrapbook paper on the frame

I have a secret, which is that I love Satin Mod Podge. It’s my favorite finish – it’s the same finish as the Hard Coat, except the Hard Coat is super duper tough for heavily used items. Regular Satin Mod Podge works since this frame is meant to be displayed rather than beat up. Give your frame a few coats of decoupage and allow to dry.

Adding Dimensional Magic to the front of a wood embellishment

Apply Dimensional Magic to the wood accent. One thing I LOVE about DM is that it has great surface tension – meaning, it stays where you put it (as long as you don’t squeeze too much out).

My #1 tip for DM is that it likes to dry in a warm place. I always put it on top of the stove and away from the windows. If it gets cold, it will crack.

How to Decorate Your Own Photo Frame

Glue your wood piece to the front of your frame, add a picture, and you are ready to roll. Hello to an inexpensive gift idea.
