Transform a plain stool into a stylish piece with Mod Podge and your favorite scrapbook paper! This easy decoupage project is perfect for adding charm to your space.

Skills Required: Beginner. If you haven’t Mod Podged before, just make sure to use thicker paper to avoid wrinkles. You’ll also want to use enough Mod Podge; be sure to wipe away any that comes out the side.

Decoupage Stool

I have to admit – I love decorating stools. I’ve done it many times before, and I never get tired of it! I wanted to decorate a stool for my new place; something a little different and brighter than what I’ve done before.

I’d say this decoupage stool fits the bill. I “patchworked” scrapbook paper on the top and attached it with Mod Podge, then I painted neon on the legs to coordinate. It’s so fun and one of my favorite projects ever (of course, until my next project)!

If you want to learn how I decorated this wood stool, you’ll first need to get your supplies.

Gather These Supplies

You definitely don’t have to patchwork your paper, or you can pattern it differently (stripes, etc). The paper template you will make in the first step allows you to cut the paper perfectly to fit the top of the stool. So you have a lot of options!

Closeup of a Mod Podge stool with scrapbook paper

I have the coolest decoupage stool in the world right now! Or at least the coolest stool in my condo, which is good enough for me.

  • Make a template of your stool using the tracing paper. Lay the tracing paper over the top of the stool and rub around the edge with the pencil to create your pattern. This helps you cut the scrapbook paper accurately later.
  • Paint the unfinished wood stool with white acrylic paint. Give the entire thing with several coats and let dry. Then measure up several inches on each leg and tape them off with painter's tape.

  • Paint several layers of the paint color of your choice onto the legs, and then remove the painter's tape. Touch up in the areas you need to and let dry.
Stool leg being painted with neon pink paint
  • Choose the papers that you are going to patchwork. You need to cut your paper into 32, 2-inch squares. The paper cutter makes this really easy . . . but you can also use a craft knife and ruler if you don't have a paper cutter.
Using a paper cutter on a piece of floral scrapbook paper
  • Once you are done, use Scotch tape to make 4 row of 6 paper squares, and 2 additional rows of 4 squares. Tape on the BACK of the paper. My cutting wasn't perfect, so I had to trim down the paper strips to the 2" width to make them fit together nicely. You can still do this with a ruler and craft knife.
Trimming down paper strips with a paper cutter
  • Turn the strips over and tape them all together to make a large mat. Tape the strips of 4 paper squares at each end.
Using Scotch tape to piece together squares of scrapbook paper
  • Place the template on top of the paper and use the painter's tape to attach it. Cut the circle from the scrapbook paper using the scissors.
Stool top template taped down to scrapbook paper
  • Add Mod Podge to the top of the stool – don't be stingy – and smooth down the paper on top of the stool. Smooth carefully and wipe away any decoupage medium that squeezes out the side. Let dry 15 – 20 minutes.

  • Decoupage over the top with Mod Podge and let dry. Let dry and give it a few more coats over the entire stool. Let dry before using.

Notes

I’m going to be honest, taping off round legs wasn’t easy for me. If anyone has any suggestions, I’d love to hear them. I just taped all the way around and then used pieces of painter’s tape to fill in.

Learn how to decoupage a table top in this unique upcycled furniture project! You can do it yourself with Mod Podge. So easy!

Decoupage table top with fabric

I love a good upcycled furniture project! I’m please to share the results of my “fabric table” makeover with you today. Call me the DIY queen! I’m kidding, but I am pleased with the results.

Mod Podge table top with fabric

This decoupage tabletop is colorful like I am (kind way of saying goofball), and I absolutely love the owl fabric I Mod Podged to the top.

I’d like to walk you through this Mod Podge tabletop re-do because, if you are afraid of doing this to a piece on your own, you won’t be afraid after this upcycled furniture tutorial.

There are several steps, but if you have patience and give yourself the time to complete the project, you are going to have fun and love the results. As usual, let’s jump in.

Wood table, fabric, Mod Podge, craft paint, paintbrushes, apron

This little display shows you most of the goodies that I used for my decoupage tabletop. Here’s the full list of supplies:

  • Wood table – mine is from the thrift store, sanded and spray painted white as a basecoat
  • Mod Podge Fabric and Mod Podge Gloss
  • FolkArt Paint – Asphaltum, Citrus Green, Jamaican Sea, Kelly Green, Lavender, Ocean Cruise, Pure Black, Titanium White (get the colors that coordinate with your fabric)
  • Fabric, 1/2″ yard or enough to cover your tabletop. I used Alexander Henry Spotted Owl in Light Blue
  • Paintbrushes, at least one large and one small, and a liner brush
  • Scissors
  • Stencil or painter’s tape (optional)
  • Brayer (optional)
  • Cute mushroom apron (optional)

If your table is going to get a lot of wear, I recommend using Hard Coat or Furniture Mod Podge. You can also use a clear acrylic sealer over regular Mod Podge. It just helps to have another layer of protection for heavy use.

Yes, you can clean the top with water. It’s not a table you want to spray with a lot of cleaners because you will eventually wear away the Mod Podge.

Notes

The reason for preparing the fabric in Step 1 is that it acts more like paper when it’s decoupaged first. It’s easier to cut and apply to the surface without wrinkles.
If you find that your fabric goes over the edges a little bit after it’s dried, I would use an X-Acto knife to trim. Be very careful not to cut off too much or chip the paint.

I’m very pleased with my attempt at upcycled furniture, and the bright and cheery color palette makes me happy (it’s such a fun craft!). Are you ready to decoupage a tabletop of your own? Let me know in the comments!

How many of us have an old filing cabinet lying around? I know I do. I actually have one in my craft room right now that has been sitting there, ripe for a makeover. If you don’t, head to a thrift store. They are always there, waiting for decoupage and to be a part of your home decor.

I’m excited to share my process for a DIY file cabinet today, and also share a cool wood file cabinet makeover from Cathie and Steve at the same time.

By the end of this post, you’re going to have the confidence you need to do your own version of this DIY project. It’s not as hard as you think!

If you want to read my tips for this wood craft, that section follows – otherwise just scroll down to the end to see the video of the DIY file cabinet in progress.

Preparing a Wood File Cabinet

I’ve got a ton of detailed instructions in my article “how to prepare furniture for Mod Podge” that should be helpful to you. Generally speaking you’re going to want to remove all hardware, clean off any dirt, and then sand your piece to prepare it for Mod Podging.

If your cabinet is wood, you don’t necessarily need to prime it before you paint (if you choose to paint). Having said that, this project uses black chalk paint, which has great coverage. If you want to turn the cabinet a lighter shade, I would use a primer.

How to Paint a Filing Cabinet

There’s no rule that says you have to paint your filing cabinet before Mod Podging it. Technically you could just add paper or fabric directly onto the surface using Podge.

Usually I paint first. I did that with my upcycled table as well as with my endtable makeover. That’s just how I roll – I like color, so if I can bring it into a piece, I will.

Here’s what I would advise based on either a metal or wood surface:

Metal – I always prime first with Rust-oleum Painter’s Touch 2X primer. I have had nothing but positive experiences with this product, so I stick with what works for me. This primer forms a tight bond with the metal and works on metal, wood, and plastic.

After I prime with the Rust-oleum, I let that dry and then spray paint the metal with the color of my choice. Then I let that dry and Mod Podge my fabric or paper on top. You can absolutely Mod Podge on top of spray paint – I’ve done it many times.

Wood – I have used chalk paint, acrylic craft paint, and chalkboard paint pretty regularly on wood surfaces and they all work great. The key is that you are looking for an acrylic paint versus a latex paint. Latex paint doesn’t work well with Mod Podge.

Mod Podge Formula to Use

In this decoupage furniture project, Cathie and Steve use the Mod Podge Furniture formula. If you can’t find it, use Mod Podge Hard Coat with the purple label. It’s the same thing.

Tips for the Paper

Scraps/Cutouts – In the video you’ll see that Cathie and Steve use cutouts from the scrapbook paper to Mod Podge. This is the easiest method to avoid wrinkles, and you have a lot more control over your design.

Piecing Together – Another method is to take scrapbook paper sheets and then piece them together on the fronts of the drawers.

The trick here is making sure that you have sheets with a design that continues from one page to another, or you’re going to see the paper seams.

One Large Sheet – If you’re going to use one large sheet on the front of the drawer, you’re probably going to end up using wrapping paper or something a little more thin (since that’s what typically comes in sheets).

In that case, you’ll want to mist the paper like I did for my DIY coat rack. This helps it go on easier, without wrinkles.

How to line a drawer with fabric

I’m so excited to share with you my newest Mod Podge project: fabric lined drawers!

It’s funny – this desk makeover actually started back in November when I first painted it. I always knew I wanted to do something decoupage related on the inside of the drawer, but wasn’t sure exactly what I wanted to do.

I recently got a bottle of Fabric Mod Podge and started thinking of things to do with it, and I came up with a few ideas related to furniture.

Then I went to JoAnn Fabrics and found some amazing coastal themed fabrics. As soon as I saw the fabric with the octopus, I knew EXACTLY what I wanted to do with it. Time for some DIY beach decor!

Octopus fabric, scissors, foam brush, and Fabric Mod Podge

I just needed to see if the hubby was on the same page. I showed him my idea. BUT he thought some people might think the octopus looks like an alien creature (I think he mentioned the one from Independence Day).

I know not everyone will love it, but at least everyone can get an idea of how to make their drawers over and customize it to any pattern they like.

But I do think the octopus pattern is AWESOME. I have a couple more projects I plan on doing with it too. Here’s what you’re going to need:

Gather These Supplies

You don’t *have* to use the fabric formula of Mod Podge for this project. It just happens to be quite durable. You can use regular Mod Podge, or if the drawer is going to get a lot of wear and tear, use Hard Coat.

I think this turned out really cool and the colors of the octopus really “POP” against the blue on the desk. It will be a fun surprise every time I open my desk.

DIY Fabric lined drawers

Next I need to make a couple storage containers for the inside of the desk. I’ll keep you posted on those!!

Gotta keep organized.

I hope you enjoyed this fabric lined drawers tutorial as much as I did. The desk is finally finished! Another project checked off my to-to list!

Learn how to do wrapping paper decoupage on a dollar store TV tray table! This is a simple way to decorate a table top with a pretty print.

Skills Required: Intermediate. Wrapping paper can have a tendency to wrinkle, so you’ll need to read my tips carefully. Otherwise, you should have some experience with Mod Podge before trying this project.

wrapping paper decoupage

Are you ready to turn the ordinary into the extraordinary with just a bit of wrapping paper and Mod Podge? If you’ve ever glanced at those foldable TV tray tables at your local dollar store and thought, “Well, they’re handy but kind of bland,” you’re in the right place.

Today, I’m walking you through a super accessible DIY project that’s going to change how you look at those utilitarian pieces forever. Welcome to the fun and crafty world of wrapping paper decoupage!

This project is all about upcycling a simple dollar store find into a chic, personalized TV tray (or craft table) that reflects your unique style.

This tutorial is designed to guide you through the process of transforming a folding table or lap desk into something you’ll be proud to display in your home—or even give away as a thoughtful, handmade gift.

We’ll start by choosing wrapping paper that you absolutely love. From there, it’s a matter of applying the Mod Podge to the table top, smoothing out the paper, and adding a few personalized touches with vinyl for that custom look.

table wrapping paper

So, grab your decoupage medium, scissors, and that wrapping paper you’ve been saving for a special occasion. It’s time to create a portable craft table that’s not just practical but also a true reflection of your personality and style.

Let’s jump into this project together and turn that dollar store find into a masterpiece of your own making! But first – some tips.

Decoupage with Wrapping Paper Tips

I will say that there are definitely some tips and tricks for working with gift wrap and decoupage medium. It’s easy to wrinkle. So here are a few frequently asked questions! If you want to scroll past to the project instructions feel free!

Can gift wrap be used for decoupage?

Yes it can. All types – from the thin to the thicker types. Two things to note though:

  1. the thinner the wrap, the more likely it is to wrinkle (see below for solutions)
  2. metallic or cellophane wrap aren’t great for decoupage, because while Mod Podge dries clear, you’d be able to see some serious brush strokes more than likely
decoupage wrapping paper on a tabletop

What formula should I use?

For this decoupage table, I’d use Hard Coat for indoor and then Outdoor for outside. Having said that, wrapping paper works with any formula. Use the formula guide to select the best one for you.

How do I smooth out wrinkles?

This is the big question! So if it’s a little thicker, you can use a brayer to smooth out the wrapping paper. Then let it dry before the top coat goes on (15 – 20 minutes).

If it’s thinner paper, there are two options. First you can use the method I use with this coat rack. You’ll want to wet the wrapping paper before applying it to the surface, and then roll it out. You don’t need to soak the paper, but you do need to get it damp.

The second is to use the iron on method that is used with paper napkin decoupage. You’ll Mod Podge the surface, let it dry, then iron on the wrapping paper. Check out both of these posts to see what might work for you.

Are you ready to learn how to decoupage with wrapping paper? Here’s what you’re going to need.

Gather These Supplies

  • Folding table or lap desk
  • Wrapping paper
  • Mod Podge – you can use Gloss with a sealer or Hard Coat
  • Paintbrush
  • Squeegee or brayer
  • Scissors
  • X-Acto knife or box knife
  • Acrylic spray (optional)
  • Die cutter and vinyl (optional)
  • Measuring tape

Tips and Thoughts for This Project

Is there a pattern on the top of your tray? Use a thicker paper as opposed to dollar store ones if you don’t want to paint the surface. Otherwise you’ll be able to see the pattern through the thinner paper.

If you want to make the project waterproof, I recommend using a clear, outdoor (or Enamel) acrylic sealer when your project is complete. You can also use resin on top of the paper.

You can also use fabric for this project! Get the how to for a table top here.

    Cut Wrapping Paper to Size
  • Clean your table surface if needed, and then use Mod Podge and a paintbrush (or sponge brush) to carefully adhere the wrapping paper or fabric to the surface of the table. Work in sections to lessen bubbles and imperfections on the surface.
  • Use a brayer or a squeegee tool to help push down and flatten the paper or fabric and squeeze out any excess Mod Podge trapped underneath. Wait for the Mod Podge to dry.
  • Once the Mod Podge is dry (about 30 minutes to 1 hour), use an X-acto or box knife to trim any excess paper and overhangs. It’s very important to wait for the Mod Podge to dry, or you’ll get jagged edges.
    Trim Excess Wrapping Paper
  • Have imperfect edges? No problem! Cut strips of vinyl to line the border of your table. I added strips of vinyl for the border of my table and cut and trimmed circles for the corners.
  • Add your embellishments – in my case, I used gold vinyl and cut a letter for a monogram. Weed the monogram and apply transfer tape, or use a pre-made die-cut letter (or even stickers) to embellish your table.
    Adhere the Monogram to Table
  • Apply another coat of Mod Podge to seal the paper and wait to dry. Once dry, apply a few coats of acrylic spray and wait for that to fully dry as well.
Use Acrylic Spray to Protect Table

Well, when I look at the “behind the scenes” of what readers are visiting here on the blog, I can see very clearly that you love re-doing furniture! Or at least admiring it.

Mod Podge for Furniture

My Furniture category is popular and heavily searched, which doesn’t surprise me because I too love making over furniture –  large and small!

So in addition to you guys wanting to see furniture projects, some questions popped up on the Furniture Mod Podge formula in my Facebook group.

I knew it was time to add a post about one of the latest additions to the Mod Podge decoupage family – so here it is.

Learn all about Furniture Mod Podge decoupage medium with this great how-to guide! Plus get your FAQs answered about this awesome formula.

So the skinny on Furniture Mod Podge. It’s a “regular” Mod Podge formula, meaning that you can use it on surfaces including:

  • Wood
  • Papier-mâché
  • Glass
  • Terra cotta
  • Tin or metal

You can use it to apply fabric or paper to these surfaces above, or most anything else you can think of that you might want to put on furniture.

MP Furniture s a non-toxic, waterbase formula, just like the other Podges, which mean it’s safe for anyone to use (including children) and you don’t need gloves. Nice for a furniture finish, right?

It’s super tough. I don’t really know what’s in it, but maybe bits of dragon skin? Or armadillo shell. Just kidding of course, but the whole point of the formula is to be tough and provide protection for your decoupage projects, and it definitely does that.

Now that I’ve explained it, I think the best way to get down to brass tacks is to answer a few questions you might have about the Furniture formula:

Q: How is it different from Hard Coat?

A: It isn’t, generally speaking. It’s just as tough. But it comes in a larger size and it’s a glossy finish.

Q: Is Furniture Mod Podge waterproof?

A: No. The only close-to-waterproof formula is Dishwasher Safe. Even the Mod Podge Outdoor is only highly water-resistant. But, you aren’t soaking furniture pieces with water, so it’s going to meet your needs.

If water is spilled on a surface with this decoupage medium, you’re going to be fine. Just wipe away the water as soon as possible.

Q: How does it compare to epoxy?

A: It’s not like resin at all. The finish isn’t hard and thick like epoxy, and Mod Podge is waterbased and non-toxic. Epoxy puts a glass-like coating over the top of items. Mod Podge is a completely different finish.

It can be used as a decoupage medium while epoxy cannot – epoxy is simply a thick, hard top coat. Try them both out and you will know exactly what I’m talking about!

Q: How can I best apply Furniture Mod Podge?

A: I use a larger applicator than a regular paint brush because typically the items that I’m decoupaging are larger.

This means I use the 2.25″ brush for smaller furniture items and the 4″ brush for larger items like tables, bookshelves, etc. You can use any brush you want . . . these just happen to make your projects easier!

Q: Can it be used with fabric?

A: Absolutely. I recommend it for adhering fabric to a table. Or chair. Or whatever.

Q: Can I use this formula in place of other Mod Podges so I don’t have to buy something else?

A: Sure! If anything, this formula is overkill for a regular project since it’s so durable. Now, if you’re trying to attach fabric to fabric or something, you’ll still need to use Fabric Mod Podge (for example).

I think that’s it, and I hope you feel educated about Furniture Mod Podge and are interested in trying it – however, if you have questions, I’d love for you to leave them in the comments and I’ll be happy to answer!

You’re going to love these unique table top ideas you can use on any furniture big or small! DIY a table top with paint, resin, stencils, Mod Podge, and more.

Table Top Ideas

Have you ever redone a table? You might think it’s intimidating, because I did at first. I’ll tell you exactly what was going on in my head before I tried it. This was well over 15 years ago.

I pictured myself going into Lowes or Home Depot, which I hated at the time, and searching the aisles for hours to find supplies. Supplies including sandpaper, stripper, basecoat, Kilz, a scraper, paint, rags, and just about a thousand other things.

I had zero clue what you actually needed to redo furniture, and assumed the preparation alone would overwhelm me. Not to mention the exquisite paint job that would be required, and that I certainly didn’t feel capable of.

So for a long time, furniture was a no-go.

But eventually I got my hands on a used side table for free, and I decided it was time to try it. Since there was nothing to lose. And by “try it” I mean paint the table and re-do the table top. And I loved it.

Since that time, I’ve re-done several pieces of furniture. And it’s way easier than I ever thought, and you need a lot fewer supplies than I thought (especially if you use chalk paint). You can get my tips for prepping furniture here.

So that you can try a project too, I’ve put together a collection of table top ideas for you to try! There’s everything from Mod Podge to tile to painting and stenciling. No matter your skill level or interest, you’re going to find a table top idea here you like.

If you’ve never tried re-doing furniture before, now’s the time. You’re more DIY-ey than you think, I promise! Check out the ideas below and let me know what you try in the comments!

From Drab to Fab Over 40 Decoupage Furniture Makeover Ideas

Time and time again, I see that your favorite projects on this blog are from the DIY furniture category. And I don’t blame you – the decoupage furniture projects are my favorites too!

I don’t consider myself to be a home repair/intensive DIY person, so the thought of Mod Podging a chair or table is much nicer than the thought of something fancy like staining. I know, it’s just a mind game . . . but I can’t help it.

Mod Podge doesn’t scare me, and often it’s the more budget friendly upcycling option.

If you’re on the same page as I am, take a peek at this collection of over 40 decoupage furniture ideas. You’ll be Mod Podging a chair in no time – I know it!

Tip: if you’re wondering what Mod Podge formula you should use for these projects, I highly recommend Hard Coat. It’s very durable and perfect for furniture.

And yes, you can brush a polycrylic top coat on top for even further durability, OR you can use resin to finish (which is waterproof).

Mod Podge is not completely waterproof, so if you are needing that type of toughness, please read that post so you know what to do to waterproof it.

Ready to dig into the project ideas? Keep on reading!

How to Prep Furniture for Decoupage in Six Steps

Have you ever re-done a piece of furniture and Mod Podged it? I have – and I really, really enjoy it. I have a confession: I love to decoupage furniture. Especially wood surfaces. It’s so fun!

I’m excited to share my tips for how to prep furniture for Mod Podge so that you can be successful, and so that you will enjoy it too. Because no one wants to get to the end of a project, especially a Mod Podge furniture project, and end up with a craftfail in your hands. It sucks. I’ve been there too.

In this article, I’m going to assume that your piece is real wood. If it’s not, you can follow the steps in this article for painting laminate/wood veneer.

Desiree’s steps and my steps are very similar actually, you just need to make sure to use primer with laminate. But as I said, we’re assuming you are dealing with real wood in this post.

So here’s how to prep furniture – I’m going to give you my step-by-step process once you get the piece you want to revamp in your grubby little hands.

How to Decoupage Furniture

Step One: Decide what you want to do with your piece.

I typically choose from three basic options (and I’m sure there are others):

  1. Leave the piece with the finish it has on it (or leave it unfinished)
  2. Turn a painted piece into an unfinished one
  3. Paint the piece (including staining)

If you want to leave the piece with the finish it has on it, you’ll need to clean it with warm, soapy water – wash and dry. Then you’re basically done. Yep, that’s right – you don’t HAVE to sand your furniture!

A lot of people enjoy a vintage-style finish and want to decoupage right over it, and that’s fine.

My only recommendation is that if your paint seems to be latex or is shiny, do a test in a corner to make sure the decoupaging is going to work.

If the paint has cured for a while, it’s probably going to be okay, but I don’t want you to spend your precious time Mod Podging only to find out it isn’t going to work.

Please do a test by decoupaging a small square down in a place that isn’t as visible. If it sticks, you’re good – then you can peel it off and do the real thing.

Now if you are changing the finish, move on to step two.

Step Two: Remove the hardware from your furniture, if any.

Clean it with soap and warm water or rubbing alcohol, and set aside. Place the screws in a plastic baggy or plastic container and note the location. Trust me on this one. I have lost screws for my hardware. It stinks!

Table being sanded with a piece of sandpaper

Step Three: Sand your furniture.

You can do this with medium-grit sandpaper by hand, or you can do it with a palm or orbital sander. I have the first DeWalt sander, but this Black & Decker one also has good reviews.

Keep in mind you are making a bit of an investment with a sander if you don’t already have one, so hand sanding with a sheet of sandpaper or a block works too.

I recommend a medium-grit (around 80) to start and then finishing with a finer grit. It does take awhile to hand sand – you will need some patience!

Once you’re done sanding, use a tack cloth to remove any dust. Or you can cheat like me and use a wet paper towel . . . :0 However, the tack cloth does work better.

Step Four: Fill holes in your piece.

Once you sand the paint off, any holes or gashes that you want to fill will be visible. Use a wood filler to do this – one that is stainable/paintable like these. Allow it to dry for the time recommended on the package, then sand and use the tack cloth to remove the dust.

If you want your piece to stay unfinished for decoupage, you are ready! If you are going to paint, move

equipment a decoupage on a wooden surface

Step Five: Prime (optional).

Depending on the color of your piece, you might want to prime. If you are going to paint a dark/black table a lighter color, you’re going to want to prime it first so that you don’t have to paint 20 coats of the lighter color. This Rust-Oleum Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Primer is really good.

Primer provides coverage over darker colors and helps paint apply better. I love it for decoupage furniture.

Can you stop here and decoupage? Absolutely. Let’s say you started with a black table and want to cover it with napkins. Well, you can’t do that over a black table since napkins are so thin – you need it white first.

That is when you would sand and prime, and then you could Mod Podge the napkins to the surface all over without any additional painting. It’s just that easy.

But you might want to paint . . . so then you’d move on to the next step.

Step Six: Paint.

Let me tell you something right off the bat . . .

Latex paint doesn’t work well with decoupage.

I haven’t done it myself, but I’ve heard the results aren’t good – bubbling, blistering, etc. What has worked well for me in the past and I have been able to decoupage over with success:

Tape off your piece and paint as normal, with several coats. Then let dry for 24 hours before decoupaging. Now that you’ve learned how to prep furniture – you are ready for Mod Podge!
