Create reusable gift boxes with Mod Podge and fabric! Upcycle everyday packaging into stylish, eco-friendly gift wrap. Easy & fun DIY!

Skills Required: Beginner. It’s easy to cover this box in fabric with decoupage medium – even if you’ve never used Mod Podge before.

how to make gift boxes

Every holiday season, birthdays, or special occasions, we go through a mountain of wrapping paper—only for it to end up torn and tossed away. But what if your gift wrap could be part of the gift?

Enter DIY recycled gift boxes! With just a little Mod Podge, fabric, and an upcycled box, you can create a beautiful, sturdy, and sustainable way to present your gifts.

Not only do these boxes look super cute, but they’re also a fantastic way to cut down on waste.

Instead of spending money on single-use wrapping paper or store-bought gift boxes, you can turn everyday packaging – like cereal or cracker boxes – into something functional and stylish.

Plus, the recipient can keep and reuse (or regift) their box, making your gift even more special.

diy jewelry or bracelet gift box

This project is perfect for beginners and a great way to repurpose materials you already have at home. You can customize the fabric to match any occasion – festive prints for the holidays, bright colors for birthdays, or elegant patterns for weddings.

These are also AMAZING for small gifts like jewelry, bracelets . . . and other items where it’s hard to find a smaller box that fits just right. You can make it just right!

Whether you want to add a handmade touch to your presents or take a step toward a more eco-friendly lifestyle, these DIY gift boxes are the perfect solution.

Ready to transform your recyclables into something beautiful? Let’s get started!

Gather These Supplies

  • Cardboard box, cracker box, or similar
  • Mod Podge – any formula is fine (like Gloss, Matte, or Satin)
  • Fabric
  • Scissors
  • Paintbrushes
  • Ruler
  • Craft knife
  • Tape
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Pen

You can use this tutorial with any size or shape box.

Tip Before Beginning: If using a lighter piece of fabric, you may want to paint the box white before decoupaging so you don’t see the design underneath. This is especially true if the box has a bright design.

DIY gift boxes from recycles

You could also use seasonal colors and fabrics for special occasions like Christmas, and even use these little fabric covered boxes to give other items like gift cards.

Instructions

  • Use a pen and a ruler to mark 1" all around the top of your box.
  • Use scissors and/or a craft knife to cut around the box using the line as a guide. This will be your box lid and body.
    Cut Using Mark as Guide
  • Mark 1/2” down one side of the box, and do the same on the other side, making sure that the mark is on the same side of the box. Connect the two lines together to create a cutting guide.
  • Cut the box, following the 1/2” guideline. You should have the box in two pieces as shown in the photo.
  • Reassemble the box by gluing the cut side to the box again, but gluing the 1/2” flap inside. This is done to make the box smaller, so that the lid fits well when you put it back on.
Attach the Cut Side to the Box
  • Mod Podge fabric onto the body of the box. Use a layer of Mod Podge to adhere the fabric onto the box, and then another layer of Mod Podge to secure it down. Do one face at a time to make sure that the fabric lays flat on the box. Let each side dry before moving on to the next. Let dry completely.
Mod Podge Fabric on the Box
  • Trim the excess fabric. You have the option to leave some excess fabric to fold and Mod Podge into the box, or trim it to the edge of the box.
Mod Podge The Overhang Inside the Box
  • For the bottom, trim the excess fabric, fold and Mod Podge as neat as possible. Let it dry.
    Trim Excess Fabric
  • Tape the box lid down if necessary – you can also glue it down.
Tape the Top of the Box
  • Apply Mod Podge to the lid of the box and smooth down onto the fabric. Let dry before doing the sides.
Mod Podge Fabric onto the Lid
  • Trim the fabric with the scissors so you can fold onto the sides of the lid. Apply Mod Podge to the sides and smooth the fabric down. Let dry.
Trim and Fold the Sides of the Box, Mod Podge
  • Either Mod Podge the excess fabric into the gift box lid or trim around the edges to remove. You can seal the box before using if desired.
Trim Excess Fabric and Mod Podge the Edges

Notes

I made this project for free! I had everything on hand. I’ve estimated $2 for cost just in case you don’t.
Step 12: You may want to check the lid fitment before Mod Podging the fabric down inside. if it is loose, you can fold the excess fabric and Mod Podge it inside the box, but if it’s tight, you can trim it to the edge of the box lid instead.

Are you ready to make a gift box of your own? Let me know in the comments! I’d also love for you to check out these other projects:

Looking for an original idea for the sports fan in your life? Learn how to make bookends! These baseball bookends use scrap wood and Mod Podge to personalize.

DIY baseball bookends

Need a great project for the sports-oriented man (or woman) in your life? This week Man Podger Walter delivers the perfect wood craft idea – decoupage baseball bookends.

All you need are wood and Mod Podge (well, and a few other things). I’ve never told you, but my grandfather was a Brooklyn Dodger. Yep! His name was Herbert Olson and he was a catcher. I’m not sure for how long – but I know it was in the late 50’s/early 60’s.

He passed away not so very long ago, so I kind of think of this decoupage idea as a tribute to him. Man Podger Walter had no idea that he made something with so much meaning to me.

I think this would make a great Father’s Day craft, or something special for your favorite baseball fan.

I think he hit a home run with this project! Try different variations to fit your liking. Don’t forget to make two so you have a complete set of baseball bookends.

Here’s how to make these for yourself.

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Measure 1 1/2" in at each end from both the left and right sides of one of the pieces of wood. Drill two holes; I used a countersink bit so that the screws would sit flat down in the recess.
Measure holes to drill with a ruler
  • Hold the drilled 5" x 5" piece of wood upright next to the other piece (base). Insert an awl and penetrate the base.
  • Paint both wood pieces with the acrylic paint and let dry.
Wood pieces painted with black paint and drying on a rack
  • While the paint is drying, cut pieces of paper to fit the pieces of wood – both the front and back, as well as the sides.
Paper pieces trimmed and laid out to be Mod Podged onto wood
  • Decoupage the paper and cardstock to the wood. Let dry for 15 – 20 minutes before applying a top coat.
Wood bookend pieces laid out with a bottle of varnish and a paintbrush
  • To assemble, attach top with two screws into the bottom base using a screwdriver. The base is complete. Repeat with the other side.
  • Attach the baseballs in place. You can use industrial glue like E-6000 to attach the baseball in place. Personally, I eyeballed where the contact point was and drilled through the upright piece and then screwed the baseball into place.
Drilling a hole into the bottom of the bookend to attach a baseball
  • Attach four self stick rubber pads to both bases before using.

Notes

Step 4: I used a nice green textured cardstock for the outside and edges of the bookends.
Step 5: After Mod Podging the paper down and sealing, I used an additional brush on varnish since this will be in a kids’ room.
Tip: I suggest using Mod Podge tools for ease and accuracy.

Walter, thank you so much – you totally hit a home run. To all of you, please visit the rest of the Man Podger projects here. Also don’t forget to check out these other projects:

Skills Required: None. Even if you’ve never Mod Podged before you can complete this project with ease. Perfect for adults, tweens, or kids!

DIY notebook made with Mod Podge

Hello, friends! Are you also working like crazy on Christmas gifts? Every year I give my kids a new sketchbook or notebook to write in, and this year I thought it would be fun to make it myself!

I love the idea of each of my kids having their own personalized DIY notebook for the year. They can use it to draw, write down ideas and thoughts, or just color when they need something to do.

My kids have such different personalities, I love the idea of creating something unique just for them. And encouraging them to write and draw is just another added bonus!

notebook, paper, Mod Podge hard coat, paper punch, and a paintbrush

If you aren’t familiar with Mod Podge Hard Coat sealer, it hands down one of my favorite Mod Podge products. My kids are . . . well kids! The are rough on just about every surface in our house.

It’s important to me that if I am going to put a lot of time into this project, that I create something that will last. The Mod Podge Hard Coat is the perfect solution.

It works as a sealer, glue, and durable finish. It’s just the thing to keep my handmade books safe. Let’s jump into this DIY notebook!

To make this decoupage idea, I started with a few supplies. A doily punch (or paper doilies), embellishments, paint brush, and a blank sketchbook. You probably have most of these things lying around the house!

Gather These Supplies

This notebook gift idea is so easy! My oldest is going to LOVE it. She loves to draw, and she is such an adventurer.

Make snowman hot chocolate jars for a festive holiday gift! This project is fun, easy, and perfect for friends, family, or party favors.

Skills Required: None. Even if you’ve never crafted before, you’ll be able to make these. You’re primary cutting felt and using a hot glue gun.

snowman hot chocolate jars

Have you seen these stacked hot cocoa snowmen out-and-about during your internet travels? You’ve got to admit – they are so cute. I recently saw this video and thought, “I need to make my own version immediately!”

Who wouldn’t love snowman hot chocolate jars, especially when filled with some delicious cocoa, marshmallows, and mints? I imagine these would be a favorite with teachers, neighbors, dog walkers, secret Santa recipients . . . or anyone, really!

With some basic mason jar craft supplies from Michaels, I made these silly snowmen with ease. I can’t wait to hand them out and see the smiles they are sure to inspire. Here’s how I made these Christmas mason jars!

Gather These Supplies

Here’s the great thing about using hot glue on the jar lids – it’s removable later. When the jars are popped apart, you can peel the glue off the lids and reuse the jars.

Fill them with hot cocoa, marshmallows, mints, or anything else you like. You just need 12 oz. of goodies per snowman!

Ingredients

  • Quilted mason jars 4 oz., 3 for each snowman
  • Acrylic paint black and orange
  • 2 pieces Felt turquoise; 1 long piece enough to fit around the jar. black; 1 piece
  • Round item slightly larger than your mason jar lid

Instructions

  • Wash and dry mason jars with mild soap and water. Let dry.
    Quilted 4 oz mason jars
  • Use orange acrylic paint and your liner brush to add noses to two of the jars. Let dry. Use black acrylic paint and the end of a paintbrush to make dots for the eyes. Let dry. On two other jars, paint three buttons in the same way. Let dry.
Paint a snowman face on a mason jar
  • For the scarf, cut a strip of aqua felt about 1" wide. It’s easiest to use your ruler, craft knife, and mat for this. Fringe the ends with scissors.
Cutting turquoise felt with a ruler and craft knife
  • Grab the black felt. Cut a long piece the same you did for the scarf. Unscrew the mason jar ring and make sure that it fits around correctly with a slight bit of overlap. Trim to fit.
Cutting the black felt into strips with a craft knife and ruler
  • Make the brim of the hat by tracing an item that is slightly larger than the mason jar lid (use the Silver Sharpie to trace). Place the mason jar ring inside the circle and trace the inside of the ring onto the felt.
Tracing a circular item onto black felt with a Silver Sharpie
  • Make three cuts. Cut the outside of the brim, into the middle of the circle, and then cut out the inner circle. I found that cutting the felt this way made for the tightest fit.
cut marks on the black felt
  • Before you glue any of your items together, fill the jars with the appropriate goodies. This will make it easier for you later – you won't have to unscrew the jars again.
    Filling the jars with marshmallows
  • Glue the jars together bottom to top, using the hot glue gun. Place about 4- 5 big drops of hot glue down on the mason jar lid and set the other jar on top.
Placing hot glue on a mason jar
  • Secure the brim around the lid using a few dots of hot glue. Make sure the seam is in the back. The good news about felt is that it has some stretch. If you find it doesn't quite fit . . . stretch it gently.
Securing the felt brim around a mason jar lid
  • Glue the top portion of the hat with hot glue – wrapping around to the back of the jar.
Adding hot glue around the edge of the top mason jar
  • To finish your cocoa jars, place the scarf around jars and secure with dabs of hot glue. Let cool before gifting.

Video

Notes

There will be no painting on one of the jars – the bottom jar.
Black felt: you’re going to need enough for two separate pieces for each snowman. You want a round piece that will be the brim of the hat, and then you need a long piece that will fit all the way around and be the main portion of the top hat.

Easy DIY Travel Mug on a Budget

Hi guys! It’s Ashlee from My So Called Crafty Life, and I am back to share a fun and easy DIY travel mug craft with you all today! A couple of weeks ago I saw these cute stainless mugs at Target in their “dollar” section.

You can often find these at Dollar Tree too, making these the perfect dollar store craft or inexpensive back to school or teacher appreciation gift.

Decorate a travel mug with paper and Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge

I thought they would be really fun to decoupage. I have been itching to try out the Mod Podge Dishwasher Safe formula for a while now, so I thought this was a perfect project to try it out on!

Gather These Supplies

Photo Crafts

I think there’s one thing we can all agree on, and it’s that pumpkin bread is the best dessert in the entire world. OKAY, that’s not it – though I do love me some pumpkin bread.

What we can all agree on is that our photos spend way too much time hanging out on our phone. And they don’t come off of our devices to see the light of day. Ever.

Back in the day if we wanted to see our photos, we had to get film developed. Even with the advent of the digital camera that consumers could purchase, the screens were so small that you still needed to get them printed.

But now? Our photos are all at the tip of our fingers at all times. So if you’re like me, they just never get printed.

I think that we should change that though, don’t you? There are many reasons to print out photos, and two big ones are home decorating and handmade gifts. I think it’s time to start a campaign!

And a handmade one at that. So I’m going to share with you some photo crafts – crafts that you can make with pictures so you can get them out of your phone and out in the open for everyone to see.

The list below contains over 50 projects that range from small gift ideas you can make for a loved one to larger decor items like wall art. You need to see this list of projects, because there’s something for everyone here!

No matter what space you are trying to decorate, or who you are making a gift for, you’ll find a project below that you have to try.

And the skill level required ranges from none-at-all to medium level crafter. None of the crafts are too hard.

Preserve your favorite memories with one of these great handmade ideas! Look through the list below and let me know which of them are your favorite. And which ones you try in the comments. Happy crafting!

Create colorful DIY rainbow magnets using watercolors! This simple and fun craft adds a cheerful touch to your home and makes a great gift idea.

Skills Required: None. Even if you’ve never crafted before, you’ll be able to make these magnets. You’ll be painting with watercolor and then Mod Podging the rainbow magnets.

DIY rainbow magnets with watercolors

Hello, it’s Rachel of Lines Across here again sharing a fun Mod Podge tutorial with you. If you follow me on Instagram, you’ve probably noticed my recent obsession with watercolors.

I just love their vibrant colors, and I think that there are so many beautiful things that even people who wouldn’t consider themselves artists at all can make with them.

This rainbow craft project was a little bit of an experiment for me. We’ve done bottlecap magnets, photo magnets, and clothespin magnets . . . but never magnets with Mod Podge and watercolor.

I wasn’t quite sure how these magnets would turn out (would I get bleeding?), and played around with a few different versions of the same idea before figuring out which one looked best.

I actually ended up using my nicer set of watercolors (the rectangular ones) to make these magnets, because they have the most vibrant colors.

Paper rectangles on a work surface painted with watercolors

You could use really any watercolors for this post, such as the round ones in some of the picture. You can find them at JoAnn’s for about $8 (and even cheaper with a coupon). The colors are slightly less vibrant but still very beautiful.

To make these, you’ll first need to grab some stuff.

Gather These Supplies

  • Acrylic shapes
  • Mod Podge – any formula
  • White cardstock
  • Scissors
  • Watercolors
  • A flat paintbrush
  • Magnets

I just love how these little rainbow magnets look, and of course I couldn’t resist lining them up in color order. Rainbow lovers, unite! Note that my littles really enjoy this project as well – it would be a perfect summer craft for kids.

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Cut pieces of cardstock to the same size as the acrylic shapes. It's fine if they are a little larger; you can trim them later.
Acrylic shapes, cut cardstock, Mod Podge, watercolors, scissors, pencil, and a paintbrush
  • Paint the pieces of cardstock. To create a beautiful watercolor look, start by painting a rectangle with a lot of water and less pigment.
    Painting on paper with watercolors
  • Get a lot of color on the brush, and go back in and add more color to the rectangle while the first layer is still wet. I especially added more to the top of each one to make it look like a brushstroke. Let the rectangles dry completely.
Rectangular pieces of cardstock painted with watercolors
  • Use a paintbrush to cover a rectangle with Mod Podge. Add a medium coat.
Painting over the watercolor with Mod Podge
  • Attach the acrylic shape on top of the piece of paper. Press them together fully so that there aren't any holes or bubbles. Repeat with each rectangle and let dry completely.
Watercolor paper attached to the acrylic shapes and drying
  • Trim any paper edges that might be sticking out. Attach magnets to the back using either craft glue or a hot glue gun. You may also want to clean off any Mod Podge that may be on the front with a damp paper towel. Let dry/cool before using.
Make DIY magnets using paper and watercolors

Notes

Step 4 – I was worried that the Mod Podge would make the watercolors bleed everywhere (and a little bit of that would be ok), but it didn’t at all. I would just suggest trying to dab a medium coat over the watercolors and not to brush it on with a lot of force.
You can also spray the watercolor paper with hairspray or acrylic sealer and let dry if you’re worried about bleeding.
The reason is because both watercolors and Mod Podge are waterbased. So when a waterbased product like a decoupage medium touches the watercolors, it can “reactivate” them.

If you like these easy magnets, check out these other painting projects (using watercolor). Lots of great ideas:

50 DIY Fridge Magnets to Enhance Your Decor and Gift Game

Have you ever made magnets before? Because if you haven’t, you’re in for a real treat. Beginning crafters pay attention – because magnets are about the best place to start with your crafting journey.

They’re small, there’s a lot of room for error (for the most part), and you get to try a variety of techniques and materials depending on the fridge magnets you choose to make.

How do you make a simple fridge magnet?

The easiest way to make a magnet is to buy a small surface (like a glass marble, wood circle, or similar), decorate it, and glue a magnet onto it. There are some very simple projects like that in this collection.

Supplies for Making Magnets

Magnets – this is a given, but the one mistake I see people making in their projects is that they don’t get magnets that are strong enough. They fall right off the metal or stainless steel.

I personally like to get strong ceramic magnets meant for crafting, like these. You can also use magnetic paper or magnetic sheets.

Surface – almost anything can be made into a fridge magnet. My favorites are glass marbles (I get mine from the Dollar Tree in the floral section) and wood circles.

But almost anything can be used. It’s just a matter of 1) does it have a flat portion to the glue the magnet on and 2) can the weight be supported.

Decor – you’re going to decorate your surface with something, whether it be Mod Podge and glitter, paper, photos, paint, and more. You’ll see in a variety in the roundup I put together.

Adhesive – you might think Mod Podge is strong enough for DIY fridge magnets, but it’s not. It’s a decoupage medium, and that’s what it’s for.

In the world of adhesives, you need something stronger. Aleene’s craft glue works well, but my ultimate preference is E-6000. It’s very strong and also waterproof.

Once you have these four elements, your magnet making can begin! There are, of course, additional ingredients you can use – but these are the basics.

Now that you understand the basic idea, it’s time to get crafting. Scroll down to get 50 ideas for handmade fridge magnets. Let me know which one is your favorite in the comments.

Wood Block Crafts

As a professional crafter, I get asked a lot about beginner crafts. People want to know, what are some easy crafts for adults to try? And I get it. Whether you are new to crafting or have been doing it awhile, sometimes it’s nice to tackle a more simple project.

I find that a BIG part of determining whether a craft is easy is the surface that you are working on! And the mediums of course. But in terms of craft supplies, some are definitely easier to work with than others.

Wood blocks are one of those craft surfaces that are really simple to use. Because while it may be dimensional, it’s still just six flat sides you’re working with. And when it comes to crafts like painting, Mod Podge, etc . . . flat is good.

So, I’ve pulled together a list of over 25 wood block crafts I’d love for you to see! I love using them around here because they are great for decoupage, and I love doing photo crafts (the blocks are awesome for photos!).

But there’s a lot more that you can do with them beyond photos. And that’s what I’m going to show you!

PS – If you’re wondering where to buy wood blocks, you can get them at the craft store, or you can cut your own with a table saw. Sometimes people at the home improvement store are nice and will cut them for you too.

Enjoy these wood crafts below and let me know what you think in the comments!

DIY Keychains you'll love

I’ll admit it – I’m not a fan of the smart key. That’s because I’m probably one of the few people who manages to lose their keys in their running car as they are driving right down the street for a coffee.

But seriously, there is NO place for them! I frequently put them in the cup holder, but then sometimes I need both cupholders. And if they slide into my lap, there’s no telling where they’re going to end up.

I know it’s crazy, but sometimes I miss the into-the-ignition type keys. I guess I’m an “old fashioned” type of person.

One thing stays consistent whether you have a smart key or a standard key: you need a keyring. I have three cars (I’m a bit of an enthusiast!) so I have a lot of keys. And therefore, a lot of keychains. And I love making my own DIY keychains.

There’s another reason to learn how to make keychains . . . they make great gifts and they are awesome for selling at craft fairs.

Beginning crafters can make them, so if you want to get started selling your projects, these ideas are a great place to start.

Are you ready to get the keychain ideas? There are a variety of projects, from easiest to easy. I mean it – none of these DIY keychains are difficult to make!
