Make a DIY family reunion centerpiece with Mod Podge Photo Transfer! A perfect rustic touch for gatherings, weddings, or home decor.

DIY family reunion centerpiece with flowers

I’m on a Mod Podge photo transfer medium binge! After my breakfast tray project last month, my mind started percolating with other ways I could use MP transfer.

My Etsy shop and blog are pretty much all about home, family, and memories. I hit on this idea for a family reunion centerpiece (that could also be used for an anniversary, wedding, unique home decor . . . pretty much any celebration).

I thought it would be a fun way to celebrate a family’s history with names, street addresses, wedding dates, etc. I made it, I liked it, and photographed it. Then, as often happens, I thought, “Wait! I have a better idea!”

And once I started on the better idea, I suddenly realized, “Wait! I could do it this way!!”

Such is the nature of my creative process.

Make a photo transfer family reunion centerpiece

The issue is that in this instance, my creative process had a deadline because of the date of the party. So what follows is a tutorial on how I made my family reunion centerpiece, along with tips on how to augment it to make your own version.

At the end of this wood craft there’s a brainstorm of other variations that I hope you will enjoy. This project would look wonderful with rustic or farmhouse decor – and after the reunion it makes a beautiful decor piece. Here’s what you’re going to need!

  • 4 x 6′ piece of lumber cut to 36″ long
  • Wood stain
  • Acrylic paint – white
  • Mod Podge Photo Transfer Medium
  • Electric Drill with 2″ Forstner bit (to make it a tealight holder) or a 7/8″ Spade bit (for tapers)
  • Sandpaper
  • Laserjet copies of the family names, reversed
  • Glass tealight holders (such as those from IKEA) or tapers
  • Roller/brayer (optional)

Here is version with tapers rather than tea lights:

Equipment

  • Electric drill including a 2" Forstner bit (to make it a tealight holder) or a 7/8" Spade bit (for tapers)
  • Brayer optional

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Clamp or brace the piece of wood securely to your work table before you drill and wear eye protection. Drill holes into the wood using the right bit (depending on the candles or votive holders you're going to use).
Drilling holes in the lumber for candles
  • I lightly stained the edges and top of the wood and then painted the whole piece with flat, white latex paint. Once that had dried I sanded the edges and top for a slightly aged look.
  • I designed my text to fit on legal sized paper (14" long by 3" high) using the Word Art feature in MSWord. With WordArt, you can resize and move the text around to create any layout you'd like.
  • I laid down a good coat of Mod Podge Transfer on the face of the wood, then placed my paper on top. To ensure a good transfer, I used my fingers and the roller to press the paper down into the medium.
Rolling the paper down onto the lumber and photo transfer medium with a brayer
  • After letting it dry overnight, I soaked the paper with a damp rag and rubbed it away. I used the transfer medium because, as you can see, even though a thin layer of paper remains you can see the wood and the texture of the wood through it.
Rubbing off the paper from the photo transfer

Notes

Step 1: To make sure you get all the candle holes drilled to the same depth, just mark the bit with a piece of painter’s tape and drill down to that level every time.
Step 3: I mixed fonts and styles and, once I had it all to my liking, I chose “flip horizontal” on the layout menu and flipped all the words backwards. I then printed it out on plain legal paper with a laser printer.
It took several pieces of paper to get all the way around the centerpiece, and I had different design for each piece – here is a sample of what it looks like before and after I flipped it:
Sample print sheet of what your transfer design could look like
I gussied up the edges of my wood with a quick pass with my small router, but I realize not everyone has those kinds of tools so it’s a very optional option.

Post Project Thoughts

  • I thought it would be cool to use the same technique, but on medium-sized flower pots rather than wood. Each pot could be designated to a particular branch of the family and then they could be take-home gifts. OR perhaps small flower pots at each place setting with that person’s family names featured.
  • You could do the same thing with smaller blocks. Put them together in the center of the table to make the centerpiece and then, when the party is over, everybody gets to take one home.
  • The idea would also work for wedding table settings or rehearsal dinner favors.
  • You could also incorporate family photos into the design for some visual variety.

I hope this sparks some ideas for your next family gathering. And, as always, I will monitor the comments section, so if you have any questions – fire away! Plus check out these other photo transfer ideas here:

Notes

While Natalie’s photos illustrate the glitter going all the way up to the glass rim, if you are going to use these you should leave the glitter about 1/4″ down from the lip of the vessel according to best practices for Mod Podge. Thank you!

Do you want some fun and simple decor for your next party? Learn how to make this easy DIY paper garland in a few steps (with a template!)

Skills Required: None. Even if you’ve never crafted before, you can easily make this garland. You’re going to be cutting with scissors, applying Mod Podge, glittering, and stringing. It’s very simple, even for kids.

Glittery Geometric Paper Garland (Free Template!)

Hi, my name is Rachel from Lines Across, and I’m happy to be contributing here at Mod Podge Rocks! I’m a little obsessed with geometric shapes and bright colors, and often share free printable gift boxes.

Today I’m sharing how to make a paper garland. If you like glitter crafts that are easy to make and you like party crafts, you’re going to enjoy this.

I’ve had this project in mind since I created some diamond shaped gift boxes. I knew I wanted to make a smaller version that could be strung together into a fun garland for a celebration.

Pieces of paper folded into octahedrons with gold and pink glitter

This paper garland project was pretty easy, but it took a little longer than I thought. It would be perfect as a project for a craft night with a few friends, as a part of a handmade wedding, or as something to make while watching TV.

Learn how to make this project in a few simple steps below!

Gather These Supplies

I just love the way the glittery pink and gold look next to the plain kraft paper. What color combos would you love?

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Print out the template. Each template makes two octahedrons. Cut out as many as you like, depending on the length you'd like your garland to be.
  • Fold each octahedron on the dotted lines. I found it easier to score first.
  • Flip over the paper so that the printed lines are on the bottom. These will become the inside of each paper shape. Carefully paint a medium coat of Mod Podge over every other triangle (4 total).
Sprinkle glitter on cardboard coated with Mod Podge
  • Sprinkle each Mod Podged area with glitter and shake off the excess. Let dry.
  • Use the craft glue to assemble each octahedron. Let dry.
Glittered paper shapes sitting on the table drying
  • Thread all your glittered paper shapes onto the twine to create the garland. Spread out and hang.
Hand holding a paper octahedron piece sprinkled with gold glitter

Notes

I had a LOT of trouble stringing together the boxes. First I tried putting a needle and embroidery thread through the top, thinking gravity would pull it through the bottom.
For some reason it just kept getting stuck inside the box. Then I tried tying embroidery thread to a piece of spaghetti. This was an epic fail. Enough said.
What finally worked very well was using a coarse jute twine. I covered one end (about 4 inches) in Mod Podge and let it dry in a straight line. Then I threaded the twine through the boxes.
Note: the hole on one side of the box is slightly larger than the other. Start threading through the smaller hole to make it easier.

Thanks Amy, for having me here today! Be sure to stop by Lines Across and say hi! If you enjoyed this DIY paper garland, I hope you’ll check out these other project ideas too:

Instructions

  • Wash and dry your votives using mild soap and water or rubbing alcohol and cotton balls. You want them clean and spotless with no fingerprints (oils keep Mod Podge from sticking).
    Clear glass votive holders
  • Mix the epsom salt and gold glitter in a bowl in a 1:2 ratio.
Gold glitter in a tray with a spoon
  • Brush Mod Podge on the votives in strokes, working in a small area and covering as much of the glass as you like.
Clear glass votive with Mod Podge Matte and a paintbrush
  • Sprinkle the epsom salt and glitter mixture onto the votive. Shake the excess off and leave to dry.
Gold glitter shaken onto a votive
  • Repeat with additional votives. If areas are missed, or you would like to add a second layer, repeat steps 3 – 4. Let dry before using.
finished gold glitter votives with tealights

Notes

Step 2:  Alternatively, you can use german glass glitter, or different sized glitters. For me, I had epsom salt and the gold glitter on hand so I went with that. I used epsom salt combined with fine glitter to give the votives some texture, which I love!
Step 5: Be careful not to get your brush too close to the glitter when you’re applying additional glitter. You can pick it up on the Mod Podge on your brush. Sometimes it works best to work an area at a time and let dry in between.
Optional to finish: Let dry completely. Brush another layer of Mod Podge on top to seal them and prevent the glitter from falling off. Since I was making two dozen, I skipped this step to save time. However, it does help the glitter from falling off later.

What do you think about these? Let me know in the comments. I’d also love it if you’d visit some of my other exciting projects:

I created this DIY cake stand using a plate from the dollar store and an old candlestick. This is the perfect budget craft idea for a party!

Skills Required: Beginner. It’s a very easy project for those with basic crafting experience. You’ll be painting, gluing, and Mod Podging.

DIY cake stand

I actually did this DIY cake stand last year, but I wanted to share it again because I really like it. Vintage holiday-ish colors are my fav, and I think the blue and silver work in that regard – yet I could use this for a party all year round. If you love DIY cake stands for party or decorating . . . this is SO easy and inexpensive!

I assembled this DIY dessert stand for only $1. I had everything else on hand. I would love to do a series of these in coordinating patterns so that the party table I don’t have yet looks cool.

One day I will have a party table, and this will be on it! Here’s how I made this cake stand.

Dollar store plate, rhinestones, paper, circle cutter

Gather These Supplies

Notes and Thoughts on This Project

Before you paint anything glass with glass paint, you’ll want to make sure to clean it with mild soap and water and then let dry. You can also use rubbing alcohol.

When you paint the candlestick, make sure that you use a soft brush or the strokes will show in the paint. You will also need to paint several layers if it’s a metallic paint, letting dry between layers.

And since I’m basically a psychic, I can already predict your question. Can you put food directly on your DIY cake stand? You could, but then the decoupage police would come and arrest you.

The manufacturer recommends a clear glass plate on top of the decoupaged plate. Are you ready to try this project? The how-to card is below!

DIY Cake Pop Stand for the Christmas Holidays

Hi, it’s David from Cheltenham Road.

Each year I throw a big Christmas Dessert Party. It’s one of my favorite things to do for the holidays. Tons of great friends and, of course, a chance for me to eat share a lot of my favorite desserts!

This year is no exception, and I’m really looking forward to it. I’ve been building my list of recipes and ideas over on Pinterest and trying to get things done as far in advance as possible so I can relax and enjoy the season.

I always try to make each dessert just a nibble, and cake pops are always a big hit.

In years past I just stuck them in some styrofoam, covered it with fake snow for a festive look, and called it a day. This got a bit messy as the evening wore on.

Mod Podge Hard Coat, painted wood plaque, Christmas graphic, sandpaper, foam brush, drill

This year I thought I’d kick it up a notch and create a DIY cake pop holder just for the cake pops (or anything else I might “stick on a stick”! Last year I made s’mores on sticks. I highly recommend s’mores on sticks!).

Anyway. I gathered my supplies for this wood Christmas craft. Here’s what you’ll need.

Notes

I only paid $1.50 for the wood plaque from the dollar bins up front at Michaels – everything else I had on hand. Costs will vary.
To keep the depth of each hole the same, I used a scrap of painters tape on the drill bit so I’d know when to stop drilling each time.

DIY Food Picks for Wedding or Party

Hello friends! It’s Aki here again from Minted Strawberry. It’s fun to make and have unexpected and unique kitchen and food accessories – it paves the way for sometimes interesting conversations at parties.

These DIY food picks are an example of that – wouldn’t you want to ask where the host possibly got this? I was making some dollhouse accessories for my little sister when I thought of making these fabulous mod melt frames into cute food picks or cupcake picks.

wedding food picks

I figured I would try them and see, after all, there’s no harm in trying, right? I so love how they turned out that I am planning to make a bunch to send to my sister to use for her cupcakes for her birthday party in a few months!

I am quite sure a lot of her friends are going to ask where she got them. And it’s easy too! Read on for the how-to.

Gather These Supplies

These party picks are completely reusable as well! You can take the toothpick off by either cutting the hot glue off the backs of the frames or pulling off the washi tape.

Why not keep these for another party or use these in another craft?

Love how fun and elegant they look! Perfect for a tween or teen party or even as wedding food picks – don’t you think so?

You’re going to love this list of unique DIY party favors, perfect for all kinds of celebrations including wedding, birthday parties, graduation, bridal shower, bachelorette, Halloween, Christmas, and more!

DIY Party Favors

Hey party peopleeeeeee! How’s it going today? If you’re here, I’m assuming you’re planning for a celebration.

Well I’ve been known to throw quite a shindig in my time. I’m not a big partier to be honest. Here’s how I roll, personally: I don’t party it up very often, but when I do, I go ALL in!

I commit to food, outfits, decor, all of it. That happens whether I’m in attendance or I’m the hostess. Being the hostess means I’ll go that much further.

It might be crazy, but I just feel like because I don’t do it that often, I should go all out. So I have fun with it!

Anyhoo, that’s what this blog post is all about. It’s about going all out and making an impression at your next celebration. I’ve shared party crafts before and now I’m sharing another important collection: DIY party favors!

On this list are two things – 1) containers to fill with stuff and 2) projects that are the favors themselves. If you make any of the containers, here are some small items to shove in them:

  • Small squishy toys
  • Pop bubble or fidget toys
  • Stickers
  • Temporary tattoos
  • Erasers
  • Sticky hands
  • Mini slime containers
  • Bracelets and necklaces

There are a lot more too! I’d love to hear your suggestions in the comments.

Take a peek at this list of DIY favors and let me know what you think! There are ideas for every holiday and every type of celebration, so something will definitely fit your party. Happy crafting!
