Kids will love making these DIY suncatchers using tissue paper and recycled plastic lids! A fun, eco-friendly craft that’s bright and easy.

Skills Required: None. Kids around 3 – 4 years and older can make this project, as they’ll need to use scissors. The

diy suncatcher

It all started when I started collecting yogurt lids. I went through a serious phase and was buying the large containers – the 32 ouncers (Chobani, specifically).

I noticed when I was done with the yogurt that the containers were pretty solid . . . so like I good crafter, I washed them out and set them aside for the “right time.” I knew a craft idea would strike.

And sure enough, it did.

Are you looking for a fun, colorful, and eco-friendly craft to keep the kids entertained? These DIY suncatchers – made with recycled plastic lids and tissue paper – are the perfect project!

homemade suncatchers

Not only are they simple to make, but they also bring a pop of cheerful color to any window – and they’re a great way to teach children about reusing materials in creative ways.

We love projects that are easy enough for little hands but still result in something beautiful, and this one checks all the boxes.

Plus no need for glass or fancy materials. These suncatchers are made of totally kid-safe supplies, making them ideal for preschoolers or elementary-aged children who love to craft.

What I really love about this activity is its flexibility. You can keep it super simple for younger kids or get a little more creative by cutting shapes, layering colors, or adding glitter and embellishments.

It’s the kind of project that encourages experimentation, and it’s always fun to see how each suncatcher turns out differently. No two are exactly alike!

I used it as a stash buster, because I always have excess tissue paper in a ton of colors.

Are you ready to get started? The only thing you need to do before you jump in is to wash the lids and dry them. Then you’re good to go.

  • Cut a length of twine and thread through the hole at the top of the lid to display. Repeat with remaining lids.

Notes

Step 5 – if you are using inexpensive tissue, be careful how many times you brush over it with the Mod Podge. Some tissue papers start releasing the dye if they get too wet with acrylic products. You don’t want to continue brushing and brushing them or all the colors will start mixing.

Turn old cookie tins into stylish storage with this easy upcycling craft! Grab some fabric, Mod Podge, and give them a brand-new look. SO easy.

Skills Required: Beginner. If you have prior crafting experience, it will be easy for you to cut fabric and apply it with Mod Podge. The only challenge you might have is darting for containers that need it, but I have tips for you.

recycled cookie tins with fabric and mod podge

The holidays have come and gone, and now you’re left with a delicious dilemma: what to do with all those empty cookie tins?

You know the ones – the festive metal containers that once held homemade treats, store-bought goodies, or that random assortment of fancy nuts from your aunt who always insists everyone needs more protein.

Toss them? No way. These tins are way too nice to end up in the recycling bin. Instead, let’s give them a stylish second life with a little upcycling magic.

Plus the good news: it’s basically a free craft. Grab some leftover fabric, your trusty Mod Podge, and get ready to turn those tins into something fabulous.

But why stop at just making them pretty? These revamped tins are perfect for storing just about anything, from buttons, craft supplies and pet treats to secret snack stashes (because some things are too good to share).

Need a cute container for office supplies? Done. A unique gift box that’s way better than a basic gift bag? Absolutely.

  • If your fabric is thin, prepare the metal tins by paint them with white craft or spray paint. This is so the tin design doesn’t show through the fabric.
Painting a cookie tin lid with outdoor paint
  • Prepare your fabric with Mod Podge. This will make it easier to cut without fraying, and easier to apply to the container smoothly. Simply paint a medium coat of Mod Podge on the fabric and let dry.
Spreading Mod podge over blue fabric on a work surface
  • Once the fabric is dry, cut one edge to be straight. You will use this as your reference to line up with one edge of the container.
Cutting Mod Podged fabric with a rotary cutter
  • Place your fabric on the cookie tin and measure where you need to cut at the top. Use a ruler if necessary. Cut the fabric to fit the container.
Wrapping fabric around the body of a metal cookie tin
  • Place a medium layer of Mod Podge on the container and then carefully wrap the fabric around, smoothing as you go. Let it dry for 15 – 20 minutes.
Rolling fabric around the center of a metal tin covered in Mod Podge
  • Paint several coats on the outside of the tin to seal.
Placing Mod Podge over the top of purple fabric on a tin
  • Place the lid flat onto the back of the fabric and trace with a pencil. Now you have a circle on the fabric. Cut about 1/2" extra around the circle on the outside – so you are cutting a larger circle than you traced.
  • Mod Podge the circle to the top. and then cut tabs into the overhanging fabric with scissors. Fold the tabs down and Mod Podge into place. Trim as needed.

  • Add ribbon to the rims of the lids using craft glue. Add buttons as accents if you like. Let dry before using.

how to make gift boxes

Every holiday season, birthdays, or special occasions, we go through a mountain of wrapping paper—only for it to end up torn and tossed away. But what if your gift wrap could be part of the gift?

Enter DIY recycled gift boxes! With just a little Mod Podge, fabric, and an upcycled box, you can create a beautiful, sturdy, and sustainable way to present your gifts.

Not only do these boxes look super cute, but they’re also a fantastic way to cut down on waste.

Instead of spending money on single-use wrapping paper or store-bought gift boxes, you can turn everyday packaging – like cereal or cracker boxes – into something functional and stylish.

Plus, the recipient can keep and reuse (or regift) their box, making your gift even more special.

diy jewelry or bracelet gift box

This project is perfect for beginners and a great way to repurpose materials you already have at home. You can customize the fabric to match any occasion – festive prints for the holidays, bright colors for birthdays, or elegant patterns for weddings.

These are also AMAZING for small gifts like jewelry, bracelets . . . and other items where it’s hard to find a smaller box that fits just right. You can make it just right!

Whether you want to add a handmade touch to your presents or take a step toward a more eco-friendly lifestyle, these DIY gift boxes are the perfect solution.

Ready to transform your recyclables into something beautiful? Let’s get started!

Gather These Supplies

  • Cardboard box, cracker box, or similar
  • Mod Podge – any formula is fine (like Gloss, Matte, or Satin)
  • Fabric
  • Scissors
  • Paintbrushes
  • Ruler
  • Craft knife
  • Tape
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Pen

You can use this tutorial with any size or shape box.

Tip Before Beginning: If using a lighter piece of fabric, you may want to paint the box white before decoupaging so you don’t see the design underneath. This is especially true if the box has a bright design.

DIY gift boxes from recycles

You could also use seasonal colors and fabrics for special occasions like Christmas, and even use these little fabric covered boxes to give other items like gift cards.

  • Use a pen and a ruler to mark 1" all around the top of your box.
  • Use scissors and/or a craft knife to cut around the box using the line as a guide. This will be your box lid and body.
    Cut Using Mark as Guide
  • Mark 1/2” down one side of the box, and do the same on the other side, making sure that the mark is on the same side of the box. Connect the two lines together to create a cutting guide.
  • Cut the box, following the 1/2” guideline. You should have the box in two pieces as shown in the photo.
  • Reassemble the box by gluing the cut side to the box again, but gluing the 1/2” flap inside. This is done to make the box smaller, so that the lid fits well when you put it back on.
Attach the Cut Side to the Box
  • Mod Podge fabric onto the body of the box. Use a layer of Mod Podge to adhere the fabric onto the box, and then another layer of Mod Podge to secure it down. Do one face at a time to make sure that the fabric lays flat on the box. Let each side dry before moving on to the next. Let dry completely.
Mod Podge Fabric on the Box
  • Trim the excess fabric. You have the option to leave some excess fabric to fold and Mod Podge into the box, or trim it to the edge of the box.
Mod Podge The Overhang Inside the Box
  • For the bottom, trim the excess fabric, fold and Mod Podge as neat as possible. Let it dry.
    Trim Excess Fabric
  • Tape the box lid down if necessary – you can also glue it down.
Tape the Top of the Box
  • Apply Mod Podge to the lid of the box and smooth down onto the fabric. Let dry before doing the sides.
Mod Podge Fabric onto the Lid
  • Trim the fabric with the scissors so you can fold onto the sides of the lid. Apply Mod Podge to the sides and smooth the fabric down. Let dry.
Trim and Fold the Sides of the Box, Mod Podge
  • Either Mod Podge the excess fabric into the gift box lid or trim around the edges to remove. You can seal the box before using if desired.
Trim Excess Fabric and Mod Podge the Edges

Notes

I made this project for free! I had everything on hand. I’ve estimated $2 for cost just in case you don’t.
Step 12: You may want to check the lid fitment before Mod Podging the fabric down inside. if it is loose, you can fold the excess fabric and Mod Podge it inside the box, but if it’s tight, you can trim it to the edge of the box lid instead.

Are you ready to make a gift box of your own? Let me know in the comments! I’d also love for you to check out these other projects:

Skills Required: Beginner. It’s a great project to start working with napkins and Mod Podge. You’ll be applying napkins to a cardboard box using decoupage and a brush.

decoupage cardboard box with craft supplies inside

I don’t know about you, but I have a serious weakness for cute napkins. The kind you pick up at Dollar Tree or a party store and think, These are way too cute to wipe my mouth with.

So, what do you do instead? You craft with them, obviously! That’s exactly what happened when I stumbled upon some flamingo napkins I had to have.

The question was—what should I make? Then it hit me. I also had a stack of cardboard boxes (because, of course, I do), and I realized they were basically blank canvases just waiting for a Mod Podge makeover.

finished Mod Podge cardboard box

A little decoupage magic, and I could turn a plain ol’ box into something stylish and functional.

This project is a game-changer if you want to upcycle those Amazon boxes (or any sturdy cardboard container) into decorative storage.

consider the Iron on Method. . .

In this tutorial, I apply the napkin to the box with the paintbrush, then Mod Podge over to smooth. This method might result in some wrinkles. I was fine with it in this project (wrinkles add character). If you want to ensure no wrinkles, use this method. It’s perfect for thin materials.

You can use your finished box to corral craft supplies, organize stationery, or even stash small keepsakes. It’s the perfect mix of budget-friendly and custom-made. Just pick a napkin design that matches your vibe!

Napkin decoupage is so easy, I can’t believe I haven’t done this sooner. Now I’m officially obsessed.

If you see me hoarding napkins like they’re rare collector’s items, just know I’ve got another box makeover in the works. Ready to try it? Let’s get crafting!

  • Add a layer of Mod Podge to the bottom of the box and line up the napkin, smoothing down onto the box. Continue the process all the way to the top of the box. Wrap the excess napkin around the sides of the box.

  • Add ribbon detail using a hot glue gun. Let cool before using.
Applying ribbon trim to the box with a hot glue gun

Notes

Step 2: I wasn’t sure if you would see the box color underneath the napkins and I didn’t want to take any chances (you can). I just did one coat of green paint on the outside (to match the napkin) and two coats of white paint on the inside. You’ll let each coat dry 30 minutes.
You can do this with fabric, scrapbook paper, rice paper, wrapping paper, or a variety of other materials.
Step 3: Plastic wrap is a great way to smooth down a napkin without using your fingers. Place the plastic wrap over the wet Mod Podge surface and smooth, being careful not to tear the napkin.

Save the earth and some money with these 25+ crafts with magazines! These projects allow you to repurpose magazines into other things you can use.

Easy Crafts with Magazines

As far as I can remember, my first exposure to Mod Podge (where I actually knew the brand name) was in high school. There was a humanities class where we were required to make a piece of art that represented us, and I chose to use decoupage medium and magazines.

And I had SUCH a fun time making a magazine collage “about me.”

I don’t really remember any of the pictures I used, but when you’re 17 or 18 you’re all about defining who you are and telling everyone about it. So I was all about the project. And I remember that I was very careful in how I selected what I wanted the world to know.

So yes, my first introduction to Mod Podge was through crafts with magazines. Since then, I’ve done about 1 billion decoupage projects (think Dr. Evil) . . . but I’ve never forgotten that first one. Nor have I forgotten how delightfully simple it was.

And inexpensive!

That’s why I’m bringing back magazine crafts today, and I would love for you to check out what I’ve pulled together. Because the truth is, there is SO much you can make with a magazine or catalog.

And not only are you keeping the publication out of the landfill, but you’re turning it into something useful. On a budget. What could be more perfect?

I think you’ll be surprised at how nice these crafts with magazines look. Because I know some of you have your doubts about turning what is essentially recycling bin filler into something pretty.

But I want you to check out these projects and then let me know what you think in the comments. Recycling magazines 4evah!

Transform your lampshade with decoupage using magazine pages! This fun and creative DIY project is perfect for unique and stylish home decor.

Skills Required: Beginner. You’ll be cutting pages and applying them to a lampshade with Mod Podge. There is a lot of room for error given that the pieces you are working with aren’t large.

Let Hammer Like a Girl show you how to create a decoupage lampshade with your favorite vintage graphics and patterns. Love the results!

A while back, we made a lamp from an old tripod. It needed an unusual lampshade so we made one from galvanized duct work. But time went by and it was time for a change – something lighter and brighter and funkier.

When I think funky, the first thing that comes to mind is 60’s fashion (doesn’t everyone?). I grabbed old paper magazines from that era and decided to create something more along the lines of farmhouse decor.

With a wooden tripod lamp base, I’m really happy with the way this DIY project turned out! Learn how to create a decoupage lampshade below.

Gather These Supplies

  • Plain white drum lampshade
  • Magazine pages and ephemera (we used a 1960’s McCalls Pattern and Home Decorating Magazine)
  • Mod Podge Matte
  • Paintbrush
  • Paper cutter (scissors would also work)
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure
  • Large paper, for pattern
  • Pencil
  • X-Acto knife
  • Flexible tape measure
  • Cardstock, for pattern
  • Clamps & something to clamp the shade to, OR just use the lamp base if it’s a table lamp

We found our lampshade at a lighting outlet store for $5, which made us pretty happy.

We gathered up our wacky old publications and pondered a theme for our decoupage lampshade. Farming? Literature? 60’s fashion won out, primarily due to those bows on the models’ heads. And the mother/daughter dress-alike duo. And the stylish dresses . . . and the most subtle advertising (in the whole wide world):

This lampshade is a pretty easy project with plenty of room for error. An added benefit: when the lamp is on, there’s interesting show-through from the inside.

Ingredients

  • 1 Drum lampshade white
  • Magazine pages or graphics and any other ephemera
  • Mod Podge Matte
  • Large paper for pattern
  • Cardstock for pattern

Instructions

  • Measure the circumference and height of the lampshade using the tape measure.
Hand holding a measuring tape on a white drum lampshade
  • Mark the dimensions out on a large piece of paper. This helps you decide how many pieces you need, how you'll organize them, and the pattern you want to make.
Rectangle drawn out on a brown piece of paper with a tape measure
  • Select interesting pages/patterns, remove from magazine by slicing along binding with an X-Acto knife. With a paper cutter, cut irregular strips of magazine pages varying from 1/2" to 1" wide.
Using a paper cutter to cut vintage magazine pages
  • Place the strips onto the template and start laying out the design. We alternated black and white with color.
Vintage magazine strips laid out on a paper template
  • Once the pattern is laid out, clamp the lampshade to something to hold it while you're working.
White drum lampshade clamped to a car jack
  • Working with one strip at a time, apply medium to the shade and the back of the strip. Smooth down. Let the tops and bottoms of the strips hang free.
Adding Mod Podge and paper strips to a lampshade with a paintbrush
  • Work your way around the shade, slightly overlapping the strips. When you have finished, let dry for several hours.
Decoupage lampshade with untrimmed paper pieces
  • Go around the top and bottom of the lampshade, marking (with a pencil) where the strips should end so you can fold them over.
Using a pencil to mark where the strips should end
  • Trim along the pencil marks with scissors. Repeat on bottom edge.
Trimming along the pencil lines with a pair of scissors
  • Working in sections of about 5", apply Mod Podge to the area where the paper will fold over. Fold the paper over with your fingers, pressing down as you go. Hold down if necessary, and apply more Mod Podge.
Applying Mod Podge to the edges of the trimmed paper with a brush
  • Let dry for a couple hours, then coat the entire shade with Mod Podge to seal. Let dry completely before using.
Applying Mod Podge to the outside of the decoupage lampshade with a paintbrush

Notes

Step 2 is optional: you can freehand it and simply Mod Podge paper directly to the lampshade instead of planning the design.
Step 4: We alternated three black and white text strips with one color strip so the design would have obvious stripes. We kept the color palette limited to reds, oranges, and greens so it wouldn’t get too busy.

Learn how to make beautiful paper beads quickly with our easy step-by-step tutorial. Perfect for crafting jewelry, these beads are simple, fun, and made in minutes!

Skills Required: None. Even if you’ve never crafted before, these are really easy to make. You’ll be cutting paper and using Mod Podge, along with basic jewelry making if you so choose.

Paper bead jewelry

I’m not sure what the challenges are in your life, but I hope one of them is what to do with your leftover scraps of craft paper.

Because if that does happen to be one of your challenges, I have the perfect fashion craft for you – paper beads.

The process is easy to follow and you can have a new necklace, bracelet, or whatever other jewelry piece you like that uses beads in minutes.

Not only can you use paper, but you can use junk mail, magazines, catalogs . . . the possibilities are endless.

I assure you, you’ll be surprised at how sturdy a paper bead is.

Making paper beads

There’s a secret for making them even more sturdy, which I’ll share with you in the tutorial as you read on. I promise these are real beads, and they can be used for jewelry making, and they last!

The secret to these simple beads is not really a secret – you’re going to be rolling paper. I wish that it was more like KFC’s Original Recipe, but it’s not.

The process is simply to cut paper triangles (really long ones), roll them up, and seal with Mod Podge. It’s just that easy.

DIY paper beads on a bracelet

Tips for Making Beads Out of Paper

Before we dive in, let’s answer a few frequently asked questions. If you’re new to this, you’ll want to read on. If you’re interested in the how-to, scroll down!

What paper can I use?

I’ve seen these made from scrapbook paper, wrapping paper, magazine pages, wallpaper, and more. You can even use fabric. I recommend avoiding really thin papers, like tissue paper. They just won’t be sturdy enough.

How do I cut the paper?

You can use scissors to cut your beads, but I recommend a craft knife and mat with a metal ruler. It’s just way easier to get straight cuts, in my opinion.

It’s not *that* important that the edges are neat, but it does make the finished project look nicer.

Paper bead bracelets

How do you make the beads shiny?

That, my friends, is where the magic happens. You’ll use Mod Podge to seal your beads. If you want to make them extra shiny, use Super Gloss Mod Podge or a high gloss spray sealer.

This is one of those easy crafts for adults you’re going to get try and won’t want to stop. Honestly it’s also an easy craft for kids, boredom buster, or craft for teens to try as well. Trust me on this!

Gather These Supplies

The only choice you really have to make is if you’re going to use a cocktail straw or a bamboo skewer to roll your beads. My perspective: the cocktail straw gives the beads a bit more rigidity.

Having said that, you don’t always have straws on hand. In which case, you can use a bamboo skewer and just remove the bead before it dries.

  • Paper scraps
  • Cocktail straws or bamboo skewers
  • 1` bottle Mod Podge Gloss
  • Scotch tape optional

Instructions

  • Measure a strip of paper approximately 3/4 inches wide and 12 inches long. Cut out with a craft knife or scissors.
    Measure and cut scrapbook paper
  • Measure halfway across the paper at one end and make a pencil mark.
  • At the other end of the paper, place your ruler and measure from that end to the midpoint. Trim with a craft knife. Repeat on the other side. You'll notice you just cut out a very long triangle. One of the ends will be 3/4" wide, and the other end will be a tip. You'll start rolling from the wide end.
    Cut triangular strips of paper
  • Place a piece of tape at the long end of the triangle. Place a cocktail straw on the tape.
A paper triangle with dabs of glue
  • Add several dabs of craft glue down the length of the paper strip and start rolling your bead, from the long end toward the point.
Rolling the strips up using the coffee stirrer
  • Once the bead is rolled, smooth with your fingers to make sure the end is secure. Let dry, then trim the ends of the cocktail straw with scissors. Repeat until you have the desired amount of beads.
Trim the straw on both ends
  • Paint the beads with several coats of Mod Podge, allowing to dry between coats. Let dry completely before stringing.

Cute recycled pill container DIY

I have four kids which means the bag I carry around is HUGE. This also means that I can never find anything when I need it.

I am constantly digging through my giant bag as kids tug at my shirt in the grocery store while I’m frantically trying to find what they need. Maybe someday I can go back to a normal person’s purse, but for now, giant bags are my reality.

I love anything that makes organizing easy, cute and is super inexpensive to do (I totally gave my hallway closet a total Dollar Tree organization makeover!).

So, I came up with a pretty stinkin’ cute way to organize some of those necessary things that a child will inevitably need while we are out. And? A child could make them!

The best part is that this project will recycle pill bottles you may already have on hand. You know that plastic bag full of them that you have been waiting for an idea? Well grab your Mod Podge.

It’s time to turn your old prescription bottles into sweet little organizers for your purse, desk or anywhere else you need a spot to stash loose odds and ends. There’s no end to what you can store in these!

I love to use one for bandages and chapstick for my purse and another one for coins. I love Aldi and always need a quarter for those carts, so I store them in these containers as well. You can make this simple craft idea from home. It’s really easy.

Here’s what you need for this pill bottle craft:

  • Mod Podge (Matte or Gloss)
  • Craft paper
  • Sponge brush
  • Spray paint
  • Scissors
  • Medicine bottles, both prescription and over the counter
Recycle Pill Bottles into Useful Organizers

You can use these for coins, loose earrings, an “emergency kit”, bobby pins, paper clips, and the list goes on and on!

These containers would make a cute little gift holder as well. You could fill one with cash and give it for a teen’s birthday gift!

Spray painting is especially important if there are labels on the bottles, so they don't show through the paper.

DIY Halloween potion bottles

Steve saves everything. I’m not as big of a fan of saving things, but he can picture the use he’s going to have for them. He takes pills for his heart condition, and as a TON of leftover bottles . . . which he’s been saving for crafts for quite awhile.

For Halloween this year, he decided to create these DIY potion bottles out of those old pill bottles! And the real treat is that he created some printable labels you can use with your potion bottles! Fun, huh?

Another way to get the rusty finish is to use texture or modeling paste instead of the painted finish above. Use that first to make texture in certain areas, then let dry. Paint over with a rust colored paint and let dry.
